Last night friends from "lower Westchester" visited us in Peekskill, and we were excited to show them around (great places like Bruised Apple Books). It was a delight to see that Division Street had been closed for vehicles, and many restaurants were offering al fresco dining. We had a 7 pm reservation at Division Street Grill. Suffice it to say that the whole experience was mediocre at best. We were seated (there was only one other group in the restaurant), menus given, then--silence. No one came back to take a drink order until we waved frantically at a waiter. (There was only one waiter as far as we could see.) Drinks were plopped down, then silence again. Finally someone came to take our order. (What were they doing back there?) The appetizers were tasty (well, better than dinner), then the entrees arrived via another person. Unfortunately, the appetizer plates were still on the table, and the quasi-waiter was ready to set down the dinner plates, when we asked him to wait just a minute (were we supposed to take our plates to the kitchen?). Mr. quasi-waiter said he was "just filling in." Obviously. On a Saturday night, a person, who appeared to never have waited a table before, is "filling in"?. I guess I wasn't in a smiling mood, and Mr. quasi-waiter said, "Oh my, I think she's mad at me." What? Entrees were ok, nothing fabulous. We left and went home for dessert. We really wanted to like this place and support Peekskill's downtown restaurants. But how can one support a place that doesn't support its patrons? Who is in charge here? Great location, great opportunity--and expectations totally unfulfilled.
