The Red Caboose is simply the best gift to Oneonta. Having an aspiring chef for a son, we cook and eat very well at home, so the choice to go out and eat has to involve excellent food, atmosphere and service. Welcome to The Red Caboose. We are now regulars, frequenting this fabulous restaurant at least once a week, finding ourselves craving Chef Eric's food and the friendly interaction from the owners, Tim and Hannah, as well as the lovely wait staff.
My family and I have tasted and thoroughly loved everything on the menu, a menu that changes seasonally and sources fresh ingredients from local farms. It is a menu that we never tire of, as it boasts the familiar as well as the daring, all of it absolutely delicious, progressive, elegant and down-home comforting.
The butternut squash soup is so velvety creamy, so fabulous with apples, ricotta and a homemade crouton...the first time you taste it you will know that you've never really had butternut soup before. The cured meat and local cheese board is my son's favorite, as he enjoys excellent charcuterie. We were impressed with the use of fennel pollen in the Camembert, one of my son's own "secret ingredients" that we have never found used in any other restaurant outside of our trips to New York City. And seriously, we could easily always order the fabulous 50/50 burger or the amazing beer-battered fried cod and STILL be regular, weekly patrons... but to truly experience the menu and the talent of Chef Eric, it is a must to explore the surprising chicken pot pie, the divine scallops, the oh-so-phenomenal duck breast, or Chef Eric's gnocchi dishes that are as pillowy perfect as the gnocchi found at NYC's Babbo (or my own!). I rarely order dessert in a restaurant as they are not usually worth ordering, but at The Red Caboose, I always find myself ordering the crème brûlée, as it is THE most fabulous I have ever had, as well as sneaking a bite of my husband's warm brownie with vanilla gelato, hazelnuts and nutella. It is ALL truly excellent.
My family and I love to travel, our goal being to eat well while expanding our worlds... and yet we are so deeply grateful for and thoroughly enjoying the culinary gifts that The Red Caboose has brought to us, practically in our own back yard.
