Thanksgiving Day 2007. We live in Park Slope, Brooklyn and we were supposed to spend the night at the Shangri La Motel in Oliverea (in the Catskills) after we ate our Thanksgiving dinner at Peekamoose restaurant. Here's the honest deal...and why we said to heck with losing our money, we had to get out of there.
When we arrived to check in at 3:30 p.m., we were the only people there. Right off the bat, it had a very odd vibe to the surroundings, it's deep down a back road (and I grew up in near the Adirondacks, so I don’t typically find woods creepy. The woman (who was almost too happy to see me, but was nice) brings me to the room. . .
The room: Let me say this, I am not some namby-pamby. I've stayed at plenty of low-brow motels. When I walked in I was overcome with the most putrid smell. The carpet was beyond old, the T.V. was a 12 inch T.V. (no remote), and there was no heat. None. They said the thermostat on the wall worked (so it would come on soon), but they brought a space heater anyway (after dinner I checked the baseboard heaters, totally cold, thermostat didn't work). Did I mention the smell? And did I mention they jacked up the price $10 because it was Thanksgiving - (and even after we returned from dinner, we were still the only. people. there.)
I was trying so hard to put on a good face for my girlfriend, and when they asked me to pay up front, a red flag should have went up when the host hand-wrote on the back of our check in info sheet that "I have shown you the room and you find it acceptable" then she asked me to sign and date. (In retrospect believe I know why she did that. We were not the first people to be duped by their website and they anticipate people who pay by credit card trying to fight the charges because they feel duped like I did.)
It was so creepy and the room was so nasty, that we drove all the way back to Park Slope, Brooklyn after we ate our meal at Peekamoose (which was fantastic!).
That was the nastiest motel I have ever attempted to stay in. Sorry kind owners, but I will advise every person I know what a dump it is. Someone needs to hold them accountable. Folks, we wanted to stay near the Peekamoose, but if you want to stay at a real, quality motel, stay with our friends who own Roxbury Motel (in Roxbury, NY).
This is my first Trip Advisor review. I truly feel I need to warn people. We are home and in laughable shock. I'm also contacting the Better Business Bureau, it was that awful.
