“Historic village”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

Visited here last Sunday with wife, daughter, her husband & 2 granddaughters while the Long Island Fair was in progress. Lots going on, good outdoor entertainment, music & food-stalls available and the weather was great too; excellent displays of local crafts - quilts, photography and artwork to see as well as folks in period costumes and horse-drawn carriages around.
The village itself has a good number of restored buildings including a charming church, a school-house and bar plus houses and outbuildings but we found a lack of details on the history, construction or other information on these buildings rather disappointing.
We enjoyed walking through the grounds and getting a feeling for how local village life used to be but felt it could have been better presented; in all fairness there may have been a visitor information centre but we did not see one during our visit.

“Refreshing History”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

History in a tranquil setting. We spent a few pleasant hours twice here and found it historically educational. Well maintained and interesting even for children.

“Lovely "outdoor" museum with great historic buildings”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2013

This outdoor museum of restored houses from various areas of Long Island's Nassau County is a great place to visit for history buffs of all ages and fantastic for families. The original farm with its many farm animals is worth the price of admission by itself. It's a good walk through grounds from building to building on a dusty road, just like the olden days! The costumed interpreters at many of the houses, the one room school house, the blacksmith, potter, farm, Fairgrounds, inn, and the two stores were very well informed and well read in the historic 1830's background recreated by the Village. Unfortuneately like so many historic and cultural places, the county and national economy has taken its toll, so there aren't as many staff as it would be nice to have there. Also, a number of houses really need restoration work and aren't open, and a good number need better maintenance. However, it is worth a trip to visit the Village and real fun to enjoy the several demonstrations and talks. A bit smaller than Sturbridge Village in Mass., it still evokes the same historic ambience.

“Full of history!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 12, 2013 via mobile

This is one of my favorite places to go, no matter what time of year! They always have something going on. The grounds are full of history in every direction and quite pretty too. There's always something for everyone here.

This trip was good for all 3 of us; the outdoors lover, the exercise enthusiast, and the child who enjoys learning. Thank you for the fun day out.
