“Disgusting Flea Bag Dive”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2011

This place is horrendous. It smells foul, you have to walk up and down filthy, rickety staircases. The rooms are beyond terrible...a couple of twin beds with dirty, smelly mattresses thrown in a tiny, narrow hole of a room. The bathrooms are so wretched, I almost threw up...they are communal so you have to deal with other people's filth (and stray hairs and urine!) I get sick and disgusted just thinking of our experience. We could not sleep because of the screaming partyers all night and the loud ferries coming and going. Please do not stay at this rat trap...you will be so disappointed. These people have some nerve charging the prices they do. This place should be gutted and completely renovated and FUMIGATED! ugh

I stayed here 1 night and I thought it was extremely expensive, the room has nothing and it is considered a suite, I don't know why, it has only 1 bed and it's not even a queen size. The only great thing is the people that work there, very nice and helpful.

This is not a hotel for those who like "nice." If you think roughing it is fun - you'll love this place. It is old, worn out, and completely unattractive. The furnishings look as though they were picked up at the curb. Most room do not have bathrooms. The shared bathrooms are in the same condition as the rest of the place - I have never seen a smaller shower stall - seriously. There are no TVs, radios, hairdryers. My single room measured about 6 1/2 x 12. I could barely get by the double bed to adjust the window blinds and AC unit. Add insult to "injury" - this place is not cheap.

They provided nice chairs to take to the beach.

very unprofessional, extremely overrated. this was a tiny boarding house, pinching every las penny out of the place. hasn't been updated in probably 20 to 30 years. bikes were non- existent the first day, and everything is "winged". not completely bad, but very overpriced, worth about 100 per/nt. won't be going back there again, or recommending it to anyone.

we are seasoned travelers, (us, europe, carribean), and the clegg hotel is basically a hostel or boarding house with or without shared batrooms. the bathrooms don't even have cups!!! i guess you use your cupped hands to brush your teeth. they include bikes, but we weren't given ours for the first of our 2 night stay. we were told "you can walk t the beach, and you can't lock them up anyway" "check in later" "no problem" but we gave up by 5 pm. when we got them for the following day, they are about 20-30 years old, and mine had a lop-sided seat which make being on it very uncomfortable. rooms are really old, breakfast is ok, but there is no sitting room, you are getting coffee in a hallway, standing up, in front of the staircase. a very unprofessional hotel, if you can call it that. not bad if it were priced right, maybe 100 per night, but everything is $$$ at fire island. it's very overpriced for 195 (that's with tax) per night. we 'd rather pay more for a regular hotel with service. cleggs is trying to squeeze every penny out of it's place, you know never replace anything or provide any professional service. we made the best of it and found much better places to stay. older sheets, clean but stained, and pillow cases the same way too!!!

I was put up at Clegg's for Friday and Saturday night while I was in town to DJ at the Island Mermaid on those nights. The desk manager was super warm, friendly and helpful. The room was basic but very clean and air conditioned. Nothing fancy but very nice and suited our needs. You might want to bring a power outlet strip if you have electronics because the building is old and the outlets are sparse. The bathroom was clean and the staff is great. Conveinient location steps from the ferry and a short walk from the Island Mermaid. I will definately stay there again when I return to Fire Island.

We stayed at the Clegg for our first wedding anniversary, admittedly a last minute idea to go to Fire Island. Haven't spent much time on the island before. We read the reviews, and basically agreed: the Clegg is a convenient, comfortable, friendly place to spend a couple days on the beach. Just don't go there expecting luxurious hotel conditions, because that's not what Fire Island is about anyway!

Pros: Clean, air-conditioned rooms, friendly/accommodating staff (really nice guys!), bathrooms were ALWAYS clean and they're fairly modern/nice, beach chairs/umbrellas/bikes were free and ready to use (SUPER handy!), literally *steps* off the ferry to Ocean Beach, convenient to town. Included bagels/pastries and coffee in the mornings, which is all you need before a day at the beach.

Cons: Rooms are small and VERY basic (think motel with slightly more character), our room had a shared bathroom in the hall (but not a big deal). A bit loud as it's VERY close to the bar scene (wouldn't be a problem for a bachelor/ette party though), and it's expensive, but not in comparison to other places (the Island is expensive in general, in all aspects of your stay there).

Pros outweigh the cons, and we'd stay there again for sure! Just be warned that Ocean Beach is a pretty pricey/touristy place overall. Example: $24 for 2 sandwiches at "Heros and Smoothies" (a place I do NOT recommend either way).

Room Tip: Call early? We called within a week of arrival and got a room with separate bathroom, but bathrooms...
