This review is rather belated. It's November now and we stayed in July 2009 for 3 nights. We were in Greece for 3 weeks and, although we had so many memorable moments, the view from the terrace at Nonis Apartments is my favorite scenic memory. I still look at my pictures from there a couple times a week. I did extensive research prior to our trip to be sure I got the bedding I needed and the view I wanted for the price I could afford. Nonis Apartments satisfied all 3 of my requirements. "We" consists of me, my husband, and two daughters (ages 9 & 13).
We stayed in a cave apartment with a bedroom in the back with a double bed and a front room with 2 sofa-like beds (they didn't pull out, they could either be used as sofas or as beds). These beds worked just fine for the girls. There is a door and two windows between the rooms. If you must have super privacy between the two rooms, this is not the place for you. The double bed was not the most comfortable, but I found this to be par for the course in Greece. It seems like the concept of super comfy mattresses and pillows hasn't yet crossed the Atlantic & Mediterranean.
The bathroom was a decent size as far as European bathrooms go. Like most European bathrooms, there was not a shower curtain so you really soaked the bathroom when you showered. We had plenty of hot water. The room was clean and housekeeping was thorough. There was a small refrigerator that was enough to hold several bottles of water and a few groceries. There was a 2 burner stove that had seen its share of burned spills, but it worked well enough to make Greek coffee and scrambled eggs. It cooked slowly but it eventually got the job done. There is a grocery store nearby - maybe a 10 min walk.
During the numerous emails that went back and forth while I was doing my research, Fanes and Jessica were very responsive and helpful. This continued upon our arrival. They were so welcoming and helpful. The Reception area is at Aroma Suites (same owner - Fanes) which is a very short walk - maybe a minute. We probably drove Jessica crazy with our questions about where to go, what beaches to see, which ones to avoid (the "adult" ones), etc, etc, etc, but she was very kind, patient, and friendly. We enjoyed sitting on the terrace at Aroma and having coffee in the afternoon (complimentary). We're not wine drinkers but they also serve that complimentary. Also comp was hi-speed wireless internet. I would sit on the terrace enjoying the fabulous view and uploading a few pics to Facebook. They also have a laptop available for their guests that we used to do a Skype video call my parents. For the people who have complained in their reviews about having to walk to Aroma Suites for the Reception Desk or internet, chill out. It only takes a minute to walk there. I ended up staying on the terrace at Aroma quite late by myself doing my daily download of photos & videos, then walk back to Nonis by myself. It was quite peaceful and I got some beautiful post-sunset shots of the church that sits next to the terrace.
And the view from the apartment terrace...absolutely positively breathtaking. When you reach the steps going down to the apartment, you truly can't believe how beautiful it is. I took so many pics of the view and video, too, although I can replay it all in my head because it was unforgettable. There are 2 similar quad cave apartments that share the same terrace, and a smaller room that you enter from the main terrace but had its own small terrace. Two of our three days we had the main terrace to ourselves. The afternoon before we left another family checked in to the other quad apartment. There were two tables with chairs & umbrellas on the terrace. There was a jacuzzi on the terrace, but it could have used a cleaning. The water was a little murky and there was dirt/sand on the bottom.
We walked into Fira each night to enjoy the ambience of the town. It was a very short walk (5 min) to the heart of Fira - shops, restaurants, people, lively, interesting.
We had rented a car on our own (although we could have made these arrangements through Fanes or Jessica) and got pretty lucky finding parking nearby. There were several lots in the area but they were usually full. Like I said, we got lucky. Mostly we found one spot open at the Hotel Atlantis a couple minutes walk up the footpath. You may have to drive around for awhile but you'll find somewhere to squeeze in.
There is another hotel owned by Fanes nearby that had a pool that we were welcome to use. We walked past it a few times on our outings but never swam. We did enough beach swimming and didn't feel the need to use the pool. Plus, if we were at the apartment I couldn't pull myself away from the view.
I guess that's about all. I would stay there again without hesitation. Thank you Fanes & Jessica!
