In January, we booked a week at the villas and then spent the next 4 months until we travelled, gathering reviews and information, mainly from Trip Advisor. I am ever the optimist and my husband is not. WE were not disappointed! After one or two earlier niggles with our tour
operator and a 9 hour flight delay from Gatwick, with that operator's
own airline, we arrived at our villa at about 01.30 hours. The interior was as described. We fell into a comfortable bed and enjoyed
a good nights sleep. Finally in the daylight, we were able to look out across the pool area from our pool level villa, to the famed caldera and what a wonderful sight!!!!!!!!!!! Sunny, blue sky, very warm but windy.
We enjoyed a very good breakfast. A choice of cereals, dried fruit, canned fruit, I do prefer fresh fruit - oranges, bananas or melon would be easy enough to serve instead. There were eggs - fried one morning, scrambled the next and always hard boiled eggs. Bacon, sliced tomato and cucumber. Cheeses and cold sliced meat. A good choice of bread, cake and pastries. The fruit juice was a bit watery.
Coffee or tea was served constantly and you could spend as long as you liked over breakfast to take in the view of the caldera. We did not eat there in the evening - a bit pricey for us. We ate on 4 occasions at the hotel next door but one. Very nice atmosphere and a good reasonably priced menu. We also ate at the Mexican restaurant up the hill from villas. The first night was good. Second night, my food was cold in the middle. The waitress eventually showed up and offered to take it to be micro - waved! No thanks. It is a 2 km walk into Fira, which we did once and back again. Local buses didn't pass very often. The hotel ran an OK free mini bus service but too early for us, for the evening run into town - about 18.30. Last mini bus back was at 22.30. Taxis were 5 euros one way. The road is busy and noisy at times - probably the straightest, longest road on island, so a lot of speeding! This did not bother us. Small mini market over road, but if you walk a bit further there is a branch of Lidl. Great for water and soft drinks etc.. at a low price. Our villa was in a great position, with a large terrace area, near the whirlpool. There was good sized fridge, a very large sink, 2 hob plates, which we used to boil water for coffee, in a strange saucepan. There is NO electric kettle, so take your own. Minimal but sufficient china, glasses and some cutlery. Suites seemed to be below pool level. There were about 4 lots of steps down to these. The sunken cruise ship is marked exactly below the hotel. A constant guard is kept on this area as fuel is escaping. Boats are there to skim the fuel from water. Spooky really. This was not detrimental to our holiday. If you want to look around the island independently,we found a car for a day was adequate. Very popular were quad bikes for hire. You can roughly see the whole island from the pool area, which is a lot smaller than we imagined. In Fira, walk down to the harbour or take a donkey ride. The cobbled path is long and slippery so if you walk wear sensible shoes! We took the cable car back to the top. About 4 euros each. There are always at least 2 cruise ships anchored, so this makes Fira very crowded. There are terrific views, masses of shops, especially selling gold jewellery and plenty of restaurants which are pricier overlooking the caldera, but worth paying the extra even if you only have a beer. We actually thought we would stay
in Oia if we go back. Just a little smaller and quainter, also with the benefit of the caldera view and the prime position for THAT sun set!! Ofcourse we did enjoy fantastic sun sets from the villa too. We were more than pleased with the Caldera Lilium villas and would recommend them to mainly couples. All the staff were friendly and helpful. There was no language problem. Any concerns we had before our stay, were unfounded, so do go and ENJOY!! Don't forget your camera!!
