First I want to say, if you take the high speed ferry to Santorini, BRING DRAMAMINE (motion sickness pills). Everyone got sick on our way there. It's better to be safe than sorry!
The Aressana was recently renovated and they did a great job! The rooms aren't huge but they were spotless and more modern than a traditional Greek decore. The bathrooms are brand new and have a real shower which is unheard of.
When you're looking over the cliffs, you can see most of the other hotels pools and the Aressana's pool is by far the biggest with plenty of sunbeds. Every morning there is a large complementary breakfast that helped start your day! The location of the Aressana was perfect! Although it doesn't offer direct views of the cliffs, all you do is what 2 minutes from the front door and there you are!
As for staying in the Fira area...I did a ton of research and being a single group of women and moms, the area was perfect...we didn't want to be surrounded by honeymooners. There was lots to do, tons of great restaurants and nightlife. The island is so small that you can travel to other areas by day but stay in Fira. So much shopping and soooo beautiful!
FOOD...This will sound funny but if you're craving some great pizza and Giro's, with a great view, check out Arcobaleno's Sunset Cafe Bar. It is further down from the Aressana but still only a 7 minute walk. Another great place for dinner is the Alemos (I may be spelling it wrong), across from the Iriana door (2 minutes from the Aressanna) above the stores. You had to walk through a small breezeway/hallway to see the posted menu and the entrance. The staff was so nice and the food was really good. STAY AWAY from the Sphinx. It was horrible! The wait staff was unattentive, the food was pre-prepared, hence the "no substitutions" and plus it came out all to quickly. It was completely overpriced and the portions were tiny. You received 2, yes that's right, 2 ravioli's with a side of risotto that wasn't bigger than a ice cream scoop. We got a chuckle watching the expressions of others getting their meals. We had the chicken and asparagus with pasta. The portion wasn't bad but was pre-made.
Fira was great. I'm glad we didn't stay in Kamari. At 90+ degrees, I can't imagine how hot the black sand beaches would have been although I'm sure if was beautiful.
