“Stunning location, excellent service!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2014

I recently spent four nights at Aigialos with my wife and her family (mother, grandmother, sister, brother-in-law, niece and nephew). We chose Aigialos after looking over the website and reading some good reviews here on TripAdvisor.

I'd be remiss if I started with anything other than the stunning location. Aigialos (like many hotels in Santorini, to be fair) is perched along the caldera of the island. From the path running past the rooms, you can take in the entirety of the caldera side of the island, from Akrotiri in the south, past the volcano of Nea Kameni in the middle of the caldera, to Oia at the northern tip of the island. There isn't much of a view from inside the rooms themselves (or at least from the three rooms our group had), which from my research is only something you see at the tippy-top end of the price range of Santorini hotels, but you don't go to Santorini to sit inside, you go there to be out in the gorgeous weather. Many of the rooms have private or shared terraces from which you can enjoy the view over breakfast or anytime during the day. If I could give the location six stars, I would.

This brings me to the restaurant. Wow, considering that I couldn't find much information about the restaurant at the hotel beforehand, we were pleasantly surprised. Breakfast each day was a highlight, featuring sweet and savory pies, a basket of homemade breads, eggs, yogurt, fruit, you name it. The one dinner we had there was excellent. I guess it isn't a "restaurant" per se, just a few small tables out by the pool and a couple of bigger ones inside past the reception desk, so maybe they don't publicize it because they're not equipped to handle large numbers of diners. Regardless of the reason, if you stay here, don't miss breakfast and have dinner here at least once. Our one gripe regarding the restaurant was that one morning we ordered breakfast to be delivered to our rooms in order to be out early for an excursion the hotel had booked for us, and all three rooms received their breakfast well past the time windows we had specified on the order cards. Eating at the restaurant is a safer bet.

Additionally, service at the restaurant and at Aigialos overall was excellent. Vivi, the manager, was especially helpful with answering questions we had before and during booking, and with arranging for us to be able to stay a bit past the regular checkout time since our ferry wasn't until later in the day. Georgia at the restaurant was so friendly and did a wonderful job of explaining unfamiliar ingredients and preparations to us.

The rooms themselves (15 in total, if I'm not mistaken) are all unique because the hotel is housed in a collection of old buildings, including a church, that were converted to be a hotel. They were pretty, nicely decorated, spacious and clean. Beds were comfortable, showers were pleasant.

There's one drawback I should note, though this shouldn't in any way be taken to mean that I don't highly recommend Aigialos. The biggest one (and, I think, one that's probably shared by a lot of hotels in Santorini) is that it's a bit hard to get to. From where our van from the port dropped us off, it was up a cobbled path and then down a cobbled flight of stairs (not steep) to the reception area. It can be problematic for guests with mobility issues; my wife's 86-year-old grandmother opted not to join the rest of us on our excursions two of the days because she didn't want to deal with the steps. It won't be a big deal for most, though. In another example of the fine service at Aigialos, all our bags were carried to our rooms from where we were dropped off; that porter (whose name I didn't get, unfortunately) works far harder than those at most hotels.

Room Tip: We stayed in Pounentes, which includes a main bedroom on the ground floor and a small second bedroom...

We really enjoyed our 7 days there, all the staff were very friendly and helpfull. Our room was very charming and it was nice to stay in something different (if you like the standard hotel box like room go elsewhere). The breakfasts were ample and always had a different little Greek treat to eat for breakfast each day. The hotel was a 5 minute was to the main street and the bus station. Two tips avoid high season in Santorini it will be very busy, May was getting busy, the other tip, if staying in Thira don't hire a car, the bus service will take you to all the other sites you'd want to visit.

Thanks to the staff at the Aigialos for making our holiday so enjoyable.

We spent four nights at the Aigialos and were treated to the best experience we've had on any of our trips away. The staff were attentive to our every need and provided us with everything to allow for the most relaxing holiday we've had. Our transfers to/from the airport, any activities we wanted to take part in - everything could be arranged right from the hotel.

We had one meal in the restaurant (we really could have come back again, but wanted to explore further afield) and it was a true gastronomic experience [they have the best Apple Martinis around too]. Our breakfast (included in the price of our stay) was a perfect blend of a traditional continental, with a Santorinian twist - and we enjoyed in our room each morning overlooking the fantastic view.

It is in a great location, a short walk into Fira, which beyond the many attractions in itself is the portal to the rest of the island's towns.

I would, truly, recommend this fine establishment to everyone considering a visit to Santorini.

We spent 7 relaxing days at the Aigialos hotel and it was perfect. The hotel is perfectly located for exploring the island as it has the best view I have ever experienced whilst being in the middle of the town. The staff were very accommodating and happy to help. The breakfasts were great and plentiful served either in your room or in the hotel. The room was cleaned twice a day and beautifully decorated in a traditional Greek style.
If you are looking for somewhere to sunbathe I would hesitate to recommend the hotel as the pool area is more decorative than usable but this may be due to the time of year we visited. The hotel is located within the town so you do get fellow visitors and even the donkeys passing by but for me this was no issue. The town is great for eating, shopping and sightseeing so head to nearby kamari 15 mins away for a sunbathe on the beach.

Room Tip: We stayed in Notes which had a beautiful balcony area for breakfast and relaxing.

This is without a question one of the best hotels I have stayed at. They are so genuinely interested in their clients and make sure your needs are met. The rooms are beautiful and immaculate. The food in the restaurant is outstanding. We loved the view and the ambience of the rooms but even more the loving care they showed for us. This is one place not to miss.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2014

We recently spent 3 nights at the Aigialos Hotel as part of a trip to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary. I have to stay this was perhaps one of the best hotels we have stayed in the world, with perhaps the best service we have experienced anywhere, and that's considering we are seasoned travellers. I've never written a review on Trip Advisor, but felt the Aigialos deserved it after our stay.

The Manager, Vivi, is such a helpful and friendly person, who always has the guests needs and experiences at the forefront of her mind. We booked the Aigialos after researching hotels online and speaking to friends. We wanted something near the main town of Fira, with great views, and a touch of local luxury. The Aigialos seemed to fit the bill. When booking through the hotel's website you are able to set a preference for which room you would like, although this is not guaranteed. Each room has a different name, and different characteristics. As we found out later, the hotel was previously a Monastery, and so after conversion each room has it's own different charms.

We booked one of the superior rooms, and I emailed Vivi to confirm the booking, and to inform her that the trip was to celebrate our Anniversary, and if possible to get the room we requested so we could have a special trip. As part of the booking transfers to and from the airport are also included.

On arrival at the airport we were greeted by the driver, and taken efficiently to the hotel. On arrival Viva was waiting near the entrance to walk us to the hotel. She, and all of the staff were very friendly and helpful. We were informed that as we were celebrating our Anniversary, we would be upgraded to the best suite in the hotel at no extra cost. We were naturally delighted, and already felt like the Aigialos team wanted to do everything possible to make our trip special!

The room itself was amazing. We had our own private entrance to the compound, and had the entire roof terrace to ourselves. The views at sunset with a complimentary cocktail were truly stunning. As part of the service we also had breakfast brought to our private rooftop terrace every morning. This consisted of a really great spread, and was always served with a smile.

The remainder of our stay was relaxing just as we wanted. The staff were happy to help with any local tips and advice, and there was always a friendly smile at reception if we ever needed anything. We would happily stay here again, and would consider going in a bigger group to make the most of the terrace and rooms. Special thanks needs to go to Vivi, and Evita at reception, as well as the breakfast staff for making our stay truly memorable.

We would highly recommend staying at the Aigialos.

Room Tip: Choose a higher room if possible for the best possible view.

We stayed four nights at Aigialos and used it as a base from which to visit Santorini. The room had a beautiful view of the the sea/volcano and came with a mini porch area overlooking the sea. Being a former monastry, the design and set-up of Aigialos is both unique and enchanting. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and also organised airport pick-ups and drop-offs free of charge. Aigalos is the perfect romantic hideaway from which to explore Santorini! We certainly plan to go again.
