My boyfriend and I visited El Greco Hotel in September 2013 and stayed for 7 nights.
The hotel really is fantastic - immaculate, great location, topped off with some very friendly & attentive staff.
We opted for the B&B option for our holiday. We were really impressed with the Breakfast options at El Greco - cereal, fresh fruit, eggs, bacon, pastries, cheese & ham, toast, salad, fruit juice, tea, coffee...really, something for everybody.
Our room had all the basic amenities and although some holiday-goers might expect something a little more 'lavish', we found our room to be comfortable, clean and very charming.
The pools at the hotel were wonderful - they were well maintained and were all very peaceful. We always managed to find loungers, although there were some days where we did struggle simply because - like every other holiday I have ever been on - people were up early in the morning to lay down towels. It's was not ideal, but this problem is not exclusive to El Greco.
We regularly lunched at the Poolside Bar, even though we were only staying at the hotel on a B&B basis. This was mainly due to the convenience of staying within the hotel on our 'pool days' but we also actually really enjoyed the food - there is a choice of sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, toasties, salads (the Tuna Salad was particularly delicious!) as well as a great selection of drinks.
What really made this hotel stand out for us, however, was its location. El Greco is a five-minute walk from Fira, which has a fantastic array of bars, restaurants, clubs & shops, as well as a well-stocked supermarket. Fira is also home to the main bus station, where you can travel to just about every town on the island. We used the bus to travel into Oia - the buses were regular, really quick and it only cost 1.60 euros to travel in to Oia, which you really must do for the world-famous sunset.
We booked El Greco through Thomson Holidays and booked two excursions with them - 'Simply Santorini' and 'Sunset Cruise' - both were absolutely fantastic and if you can only do one Thomson excursion during your holiday, make sure it's the Sunset Cruise - here you'll get to swim in the volcano's hot springs, dine at Thirissa (the island opposite Santorini) and watch the sun disappear into the ocean. What's more, you have the opportunity to view Santorini from the caldera - the views of the island are quite simply breathtaking!
Also, ensure you do the hike from Fira to Oia - start off early to avoid the blistering heat of the midday sun. It's approximately six miles but it will offer you some fantastic views of the island that you won't get on a bus/car.
Santorini was, without any shadow of a doubt, my most favourite and memorable holiday - there isn't anywhere quite like it. I wouldn't hesitate to return to El Greco and have in fact recommended to my family & friends that if they visit, this is where they must stay.
