During our two week trip to Greece we decided to make a short stop in beautiful Santorini. We considered ourselves lucky having found a hotel in relatively quite Oia (Ia).
We booked our room in Laokasti Villas for two nights through the internet. Since we came from a nearby island and wanted to make sure everything is ok with our accommodation, we called the hotel before our ferry left for Santorini (only three hours before check-in into the hotel!). It was confirmed that our room is ready for us.
However, upon arrival we were told that there are no rooms in the hotel and that we would be transfered to another beautiful hotel with one star more, sea view, etc. The hotel we ended up was a true tourist trap. It was not close to the sea, indeed not close to anything (about 5 km from Oia, the closest landmark is the bus stop within 10 minutes walking distance
where buses pass every 3 hours),
it had no kitchen (thus for any food you needed to travel to Oia), etc.
At Laokasti Villas we were promised a rental car for compensation and transfer to now far away Oia, which after one day of waiting and repeatedly calling the hotel, we couldn't get. For Laokasti Villas the issue of compensation was done with this effort.
Overbooking can happen, especially in the summer season. What made us believe that the hotel uses this as a general `business model' was that
1) We were not the only guests being send to the other hotel. Indeed, we were transferred to the other hotel together with another guest checking into
Laokasti.
2) After minimal effort of compensation (i.e., checking the
availability of a rental car from a friendly business) Laokasti was
not offering any compensation for the troubles and the difference
between their rates (150 Euros per night) and the rates of the other hotel (70 Euros per night!!!).
The encounter with the business attitude of Lakoasti Villas ruined our 3 day short-trip to Santorini. We deliberately booked a room in the village of Oia and what we got was a hotel that we would never have booked and insulting treatment by the Laokasti hotel.
As the other review states Lakasti Villas must be a nice hotel in a nice village, if you indeed get there. But don't take the staff's
assurance as a guarantee, you will only surely know once you are there. Good luck!
