After doing hours of research, I chose the Sea Captain's House for our family trip to Santorini. Hard when you're looking at photos and reading descriptions simply over the internet. But what a delight when we walked in to this gorgeous refurbished old cave house. The views overlooking the caldera and volcano were amazing! I knew breakfast was included in our price but I did not expect the full made-to-order breakfast each morning served on fine European linens and Wedgewood china...right on our own private terrace! A real plus was the free wi-fi, which was very beneficial for my husband's business and a life-saver for my two teenage daughters. We would definitely go back there. The owner Tony has 5 homes he has re-done and although we never got to see the insides, we hear they are just as lovely as ours was. We stayed in the original Sea Captain's house as we needed the extra bedroom for the kids. We also had access to a rooftop terrace where there was a shower and hot tub (a necessity for baking in the hot Greek sun). A pool would have been nice, but the quaintness and charm of this place outweighed having that.

This place is a great, relaxing way to experience Oia. Very upscale feeling, extremely comfortable bed (hard to leave it) and beautiful views from the roof deck. it is true that most reviews speak of the great views that the hotels have, but I think this one is the best. You have a true panoramic of the entire island and caldera, along with the volcano. True, you cant see the sunset from there, but it is a short walk to go see it, and it is a better view for the rest of the day. The staff is super-friendly and helpful. The restaurant Nectar and Ambrosia is very good, and you are treated extra-special there for staying in the hotel. It was our favorite place of all the hotels (6 others) that we stayed in in Greece. Also, the breakfast was great and served on your porch over looking the caldera. Relax in your bathrobe, eat breakfast and then go take a nap to sleep off the champagne. Oh, there is no pool here, which is a downside, but i liked the small feel of the place, and the roof deck has a great jacuzzi and outdoor shower to cool off in.

My new wife and I were pleasantly surprised to arrive at the Sea Captain's House. The staff was very accomodating upon arrival throughout the entire stay. The SCH was perfectly centrally located in the town of Oia, the rooms were decorated beautifully and the private terrace had the most magnificent view of the volcano. We fell in love with out home at the SCH during our stay in early June and would go back in a heartbeat.

We had originally planned on a holiday at the Sea Captain's House two years ago; but because of my husband's health issues; we were not able to go until this year. This is absolutely the very best place to stay ( for the price, amenities, location in the village itself--all things considered) in the village of Oia !!
The central location made it possible for my husband--who has a fairly new prosthetic leg--to walk to the village restaurants, shops, etc. without having to negotiate too many steps ! Another important 'plus' to staying at this small hotel, is the fact that you can order your dinner delivered to your suite from one of the two restaurants (owned by Tony and his partner) if you should wish to do so. Everything in the village is close-by for those older visitors who may not wish to hike around /or sightsee on other parts of the island. We were happy most days just relaxing on our lovely terrace watching the village activity and the ships and sailboats come and go.
Another seldom mentioned benefit of staying at the Sea Captain's House, is that there are 2 or 3 cars there that can be rented by guests --at a much lower rate than is offered by other car rental agencies on the island. Guests staying here also receive a reduced rate when dining at the 'Ambrosia' or the 'Ambrosia & Nectar' restaurants.
We had booked the Venetian Suite, but when we arrived we found- to our delight- that we had been given a free upgrade to the larger Sailing Suite! Tony Mossimann ( the owner) said that he felt that since we had had to wait so long to come to Santorini, that we deserved this bigger accommodation!! How many times does this happen to you ??!! Not withstanding the great location, beautifully appointed rooms, and incomparable views;-- the best thing about the 1864 Sea Captains House is the fantastic staff ! Tony and Nikki could not have been kinder or more helpful . They literally
could not do enough for their guests. We wish them many, many more years of success with this very unique hotel !

I’m sure they hear this all the time, but I first heard of this property from the Giada in Paradise Santorini special on the Food Network in 2007. This is where she stayed while on the island, so I kept the name in my files.

I knew I wanted to stay in Oia while in Santorini, but had several places on my short list, so choosing one would be difficult. Also, since it was sort of last-minute, we were on a bit of a budget for this trip. While exploring our options, I remembered the Sea Captain’s House, and checked out their website. They had 3 suites in the main hotel, a separate villa, and a little house called Falling Stars, which looked lovely, and was within our budget, so I sent off an inquiry.

Tony, the owner, responded promptly. Turns out they did not have the Falling Stars house for all 3 nights we needed; however, if we didn’t mind moving, we could stay 1 night each at 3 different accommodations for a good price. We didn’t mind moving at all - it was actually kind of fun experiencing 3 different places. We stayed the 1st night in Villa Ambrosia; the 2nd night in the Sailing Suite; the last night in the Falling Stars house. Each one was truly lovely in its own way, so it’s nearly impossible to choose a favorite.

I won’t go into the details of each accommodation, as their website is very extensive, but all are exactly as shown. Each had a terrace or balcony, and the views from each of them were just absolutely amazing! I could have just sat there the entire time and looked out to the sea, especially at night when all the lights were twinkling.

Tony, the owner of The Sea Captain’s House, was very nice and accommodating. He is very well-traveled and has taken great care with his properties, as the furnishings, decorations, and details were just beautiful. Each accommodation was very elegant and charming. All had the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in, and the complimentary beverages in the fridge and L'Occitaine toiletries were a wonderful touch!

Tony’s assistant, Nicolai, was wonderful! He picked us up from the taxi, showed us around our accommodations each day, as well as serving us the most delicious breakfast every morning. Nicolai also works at Ambrosia & Nectar, one of the restaurants that Tony has in Oia, so we would see him in the morning for breakfast, and then again in the evening for dinner (where we ate two nights~the best!!)

The Sea Captain's House is in a great location as well, central to all of Oia's restaurants, cafes, galleries and shops. We very much enjoyed our stay there, and can highly recommend it!
