“More than we bargained for”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2013

My husband and I stayed in Fanari Villas for one night during our tour of the Greek Islands in May 2013. What an experience! We got more than we bargained for. We booked a Junior Suite but I think we got more. Our suite was spread over 2 floors. The lower floor had a living room/kitchenette, bathroom and balcony with outdoor jacuzzi. On the upper floor is the bedroom and another balcony with a panoramic view of the sea and the famous sunset.
The staff is very friendly, especially Nicolas who was at reception. He quickly organised a porter to fetch our luggage from the car. This is very necessary since there are quite a lot of stairs to get to the hotel and then again to your room. But for this view and this hotel it is all worthwhile!
We received a complimentary bottle of wine, which we enjoyed on our balcony with sunset. If you want to see the famous Oia sunset, Fanari Villas is definitely the place to stay. The view is unbeatable! It is also within walking distance of shops and restaurants with a free parking area not far from the hotel.

My gf and I had an excellent time here. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The location is excellent. We were in the middle of all the white buildings with a perfect view of the sunset. It is very close to the castle where everyone comes to watch the sunset. You do have to walk quite a few set of stairs to get to all the shops but we could all use some exercise right? And you don't have to feel bad about eating gelato everyday! My only one recommendation for the hotel would be to turn the one section of the pool that looks like a hot tub into a hot tub.

This is what you picture when you think of your perfect Santorini holiday: white-washed homes teetering on the caves high above the sparkling blue sea. At Fanari you have your personal view of the sunset right from your own balcony, a view hundreds crowd the village to see. I knew the sunsets were spectacular from all the guide books, but to see the bright orange yolk of sun dip below the horizon whilst toasting with a bottle of local wine on our private balcony is not to be forgotten. We paid a bit more for a room with our own hot tub and a slightly larger space which we found well worth it: the evenings in May were a bit cooler and what a joy it was to relax in the steam after dinner and take in the sea view.
Some minor considerations: the bathroom was a bit hard to manage for my tall husband and I couldn't see someone like my elderly parents getting along well here (too many steep steps), but the location is hard to beat, and above all the service is fantastic. I felt like a queen with every whim eagerly willing to be met. We decided to hire a car and talked to Nickolas at the front desk. Literally 10 minutes later we had a car waiting for us that we could drop off at the port when we left (they told us to leave it at the port anywhere, doors unlocked, keys under the mat! Island life for you). We had an evening boat to our next destination, and Nikolas graciously arranged late check out for us. He also helped with grocery store and restaurant recommendations: the food at the restaurant there is excellent but a bit pricy. But the local beer, Red Donkey micro brew, is worth trying!
I hope to be returning soon to Fanari Villas.

Room Tip: We were in 17, with its own outdoor hot tub and more private balcony (less people passed our stairwa...

A beautiful hotel built into the hillside with stunning views and excellent, personable service. The staff was all very friendly and helpful with suggestions and coordinating activities or car rentals. We had a better view of the famous Santorini sunset from our private patio than the masses crammed into the fortress or the streets or restaurants. The pool is partially in a cave so you can swim in the sunshine or shade. An amazing place! Go.

A wonderful hotel in a beautiful location. After arriving to the Port, we took a couple of buses out to Oia. We had trouble finding the hotel because we didn't know what we were looking for. Luckily, we ran into a really nice local woman who called the hotel and were greeted by Alexander, who ran to grab our suitcases so that he could carry them for us (a good thing, because he took them down over 100 stairs to the hotel!). Alexandra greeted us when we arrived - a super gracious manager and hostess who showed us around the resort and took us to our lovely room just in time for a quick nap and refresher just before our first of three amazing sunsets - with the best view from our very own balcony (as other visitors crowded in several public areas for the same view), with a complementary bottle of nice Santorini red wine.

A fair warning - apparently Santorini can get very very windy (gusts over 40mph) - and we found out the hard way at about 4AM when we were awoken by our umbrella and shutters violently shaking (had we known, we would have secured the umbrella and the shutters beforehand!). The wind continued for another day and night, so our second sunset was, although gorgeous, very cold! Totally worth it though - I just bundled up and enjoyed the view (I'd bring a windbreaker and pants to be best prepared in the future). Luckily we had one additional wind-free evening, where we enjoyed the sunset without layers of clothing and blankets.

The location is great - almost at the end of the city / island for lovely views, but also a little more quiet than being central to the square (tourists come in from the cruise ships and also to see the sunsets, so it can get a little crowded even in the off season - but being off the beaten path just a hair helps avoid this). Everything is near enough to walk, and the buses are accessible to get anywhere else on the island. We had a nice visit to Fira (although Oia is by far better in our opinion - less uber-touristy feeling if that makes sense - the food is more traditional than Fia's restaurants, which cater to cruise ships with things like Irish bars believe it or not), and also went out to Akrotiri and Red Beach (highly recommend!).

Nikolas was also an amazing and friendly / cheerful host - very helpful in providing us recommendations for restaurants and activities. We went to dinner at Kyprida for traditional Cypriot food out on the garden rooftop, 1800, and Karma. Karma was our favorite of the three - with awesome food and lovely ambiance. We would have tried Ambrosia also (Karma was Nikolas' reco and he was so right - and Ambrosia was his other), but it was too windy while we were there so didn't get the chance, as we avoided the outdoor areas on the cliffs a couple nights. 1800 had great food but unfortunately pretty bad service. We didn't get menus for a while after we were seated. The table next to us ordered a glass of wine and didn't receive it for 30 minutes - and when they finally did got the incorrect color! And then it took us 5 times asking for the bill before it was brought. In any case, at Fanari, Nikolas took very great notes about our experiences, so I'm sure that this is why he is SO good at giving recommendations to other visitors! The only other place I'd recommend is to go for a crepe and glass of wine in the afternoon when it's quiet at Melanio Patisserie up on the veranda overlooking the caldera - to die for.

The last day, Nikolas helped us to arrange pickup and travel out by boat from Amoudi Beach to the caldera. It was a great exursion. We had to check out before we left, but, to our surprise, when we returned from our excursion, Alexandra brought us into an available suite to refresh and to stay for several hours until we had to leave for the airport. We didn't realize at first that she was going to allow us to use the room for such a long time, but discovered at her insistence that she thought it silly for us to try to give it back when it was free and available for our comfort. It was certainly above and beyond - says a lot about how gracious she and the rest of the staff are at Fanari.

We had a wonderful stay and can't imagine having stayed anywhere else but at Fanari. Thanks so much for a lovely time at a lovely Villa!

I went there on a short 3 day trip.
The view form the hotel is a postcard perfect one.
The location and room cuteness I would give 7 stars
the service was awesome ,they took care of us as we were the only tourists in town.
the food was nice .
Even though I just came with a family member and had fun I would say this is the perfect place for a couple in love .

Room Tip: all the rooms have great views.

We visited Fanari on the 6th May this year which is early for us and clearly for the islanders, but absolutely the right decision bearing in mind that the island can apparently become saturated with regular tourists and visiting cruise ships in high season. Having travelled and walked around a number of the villages on the island ( there is a nice coastal path which runs along the Caldera).
Oia (Eeah) is in our view the nicest and has the benefits of both a view towards the volcano and adjacent islands and the sunset. We did quite a bit of research before selecting Fanari as it is quite possible to be confused by the various descriptions of caldera view, sunset view, sea view etc. From the photographs a lot of the hotels seem to have the same view which you appreciate when you are here because many are right next to or above an below each other on the cliff face. The Fanari sits above the harbour at Amoundi facing the Island of Thirasia to the West and is a collection of cave houses and terraces facing out to sea with fabulous views of the sunset. Nicholas on reception, the most helpful, friendly and eager to please host I believe we have ever had, presides over the Hotel on a day to day basis, in much the same way as a mother hen and nothing is too much trouble. (Anyone who has met Nicholas will know what I mean). I cant believe that anyone would have a bad word to say about him and the rest of the staff. We had a few early season issues with our room ( mostly minor stuff with shower heads and a wonky fridge) but it was all dealt with immediately and with good grace.
The hotel has a good restaurant and we ate there several nights - however the menu was pretty static and would have benefited from a couple of specials to vary it a little. There are of course lots of places to eat around the town so there is plenty of choice. The dip pool is unheated but refreshing once in and the rooms are comfortable ( ours - No. 2 could probably have done with a bathroom makeover in the off season). The Location and the view are what you come for and so we didnt spend a lot of time in the rooms as its lovely to sit on the terraces and watch the world go by or head off into the town or surrounding areas.
The buses all worked for us and we visited both the ancient ruins at Thera and the fabulous covered site at Akrotiri which is a must visit if you go to the island, as is the mildly active Volcano in the centre which is accessed via numerous boat trip companies. Speak to Nicholas about any of the this stuff and hell help you out. What can I say - we had a great time!

Room Tip: It wasnt busy when we went so difficult to say how it is in high season. We were next to the Pool (r...
