A wonderful hotel in a beautiful location. After arriving to the Port, we took a couple of buses out to Oia. We had trouble finding the hotel because we didn't know what we were looking for. Luckily, we ran into a really nice local woman who called the hotel and were greeted by Alexander, who ran to grab our suitcases so that he could carry them for us (a good thing, because he took them down over 100 stairs to the hotel!). Alexandra greeted us when we arrived - a super gracious manager and hostess who showed us around the resort and took us to our lovely room just in time for a quick nap and refresher just before our first of three amazing sunsets - with the best view from our very own balcony (as other visitors crowded in several public areas for the same view), with a complementary bottle of nice Santorini red wine.
A fair warning - apparently Santorini can get very very windy (gusts over 40mph) - and we found out the hard way at about 4AM when we were awoken by our umbrella and shutters violently shaking (had we known, we would have secured the umbrella and the shutters beforehand!). The wind continued for another day and night, so our second sunset was, although gorgeous, very cold! Totally worth it though - I just bundled up and enjoyed the view (I'd bring a windbreaker and pants to be best prepared in the future). Luckily we had one additional wind-free evening, where we enjoyed the sunset without layers of clothing and blankets.
The location is great - almost at the end of the city / island for lovely views, but also a little more quiet than being central to the square (tourists come in from the cruise ships and also to see the sunsets, so it can get a little crowded even in the off season - but being off the beaten path just a hair helps avoid this). Everything is near enough to walk, and the buses are accessible to get anywhere else on the island. We had a nice visit to Fira (although Oia is by far better in our opinion - less uber-touristy feeling if that makes sense - the food is more traditional than Fia's restaurants, which cater to cruise ships with things like Irish bars believe it or not), and also went out to Akrotiri and Red Beach (highly recommend!).
Nikolas was also an amazing and friendly / cheerful host - very helpful in providing us recommendations for restaurants and activities. We went to dinner at Kyprida for traditional Cypriot food out on the garden rooftop, 1800, and Karma. Karma was our favorite of the three - with awesome food and lovely ambiance. We would have tried Ambrosia also (Karma was Nikolas' reco and he was so right - and Ambrosia was his other), but it was too windy while we were there so didn't get the chance, as we avoided the outdoor areas on the cliffs a couple nights. 1800 had great food but unfortunately pretty bad service. We didn't get menus for a while after we were seated. The table next to us ordered a glass of wine and didn't receive it for 30 minutes - and when they finally did got the incorrect color! And then it took us 5 times asking for the bill before it was brought. In any case, at Fanari, Nikolas took very great notes about our experiences, so I'm sure that this is why he is SO good at giving recommendations to other visitors! The only other place I'd recommend is to go for a crepe and glass of wine in the afternoon when it's quiet at Melanio Patisserie up on the veranda overlooking the caldera - to die for.
The last day, Nikolas helped us to arrange pickup and travel out by boat from Amoudi Beach to the caldera. It was a great exursion. We had to check out before we left, but, to our surprise, when we returned from our excursion, Alexandra brought us into an available suite to refresh and to stay for several hours until we had to leave for the airport. We didn't realize at first that she was going to allow us to use the room for such a long time, but discovered at her insistence that she thought it silly for us to try to give it back when it was free and available for our comfort. It was certainly above and beyond - says a lot about how gracious she and the rest of the staff are at Fanari.
We had a wonderful stay and can't imagine having stayed anywhere else but at Fanari. Thanks so much for a lovely time at a lovely Villa!
