First things first. This hotel is in Oia (no more than about 15 minutes drive from the airport) and not within walking distance of Thira, the largest 'town' on the island. Oia is much smaller, although it still manages to have an incalculable number of jewellery shops, and has fabulous sunsets in the evening. Walk right down to the end of the village to watch the sunset, but be warned that it is far from romantic as hundreds of people are doing the same thing!
The Katikies is a very beautiful hotel. Like all hotels on Santorini, it is perched on a cliff overlooking the volcano and the sea and it all painted white. It has the most beautiful and really large swimming pool (I like being to actually swim!), which is an infinity pool and has great views. There is also a smaller pool nearer the top of the cliff and a large jacuzzi nearer the bottom. It is unfair to say that there is no lounging space. By the main pool there are only about 8 loungers but higher up there is a big deck with lots of double sunloungers (i.e. big enough for two people to lie down on together!), the jacuzzi area has several more sunloungers and most rooms have a terrace you can lounge on too.
By some stroke of utter good fortune we were upgraded to the Katikies Suite (Room 25), which is the largest room in the hotel. It has a mezzanine bedroom, a huge living room area with a fireplace and antiques and a sofa, a massive closet the size of most bedrooms, a double shower but best of all a huge private terrace with an outdoor private jacuzzi, with a beautiful view of the sea. I recommend it if you are having a honeymoon here. Stunning!
Breakfasts are served on your terrace, complete with champagne. The pool bar does a great lunch and in the evening you can choose between three different restaurants - none of which we sampled because there were so many great restaurants in town. I would recommend the wine tasting, which takes place on one of the terraces at sunset - very nice indeed and a pleasure to discover that Greek wines are not as bad as I thought they were...
The staff are also very nice in general terms and were always efficient and helpful. All in all, this is a beautiful place, and if you can afford it, it is well worth a visit. I had no problems with air conditioning or anything anyone else has mentioned. Everything seemed to run like clockwork for us. There are lots of steps but that it true of Santorini generally.
Have a great time!
