“Nice....but”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

We recently stayed for a week at the Ambelia traditional villas; having read the previous reviews it sounded like an ideal place to stay.

We were met by Sammy on arrival who took us to the villa, which was a 5/6 minute walk down steep cobbled path and steps (ladies, make sure you are wearing flat shoes). The villa was very spacious, clean and reasonably comfortable. There was a comfortable queen sized bed, lots of hanging space for clothes, but could have done with some shelves/drawers for shorts, undies etc. Bathroom was adequate. Big living space with kitchenette, daybed, TV and radio/cd player, however the TV did not work (very poor signal) and the radio didn’t work properly, luckily we had an iPad to play music.

The villa had a small patio area with table and 2 chairs, but unfortunately did not get any sun during the day. If you stay here make sure you get somewhere to sunbathe during the day, if that’s what you like. There is currently no swimming pool, so if you like to lounge around a pool during the day this place is not for you.

There is a nice restaurant on the complex which we used one night, the food was very good and although there was only one waiter the service was friendly. If you want other restaurants and bars then you need to walk into Oia, which will you take you at least 20 minutes, part of which is up steep paths/steps, which is not ideal after having showered and dressed for the evening.

Overall we enjoyed our stay, the villa was nice and Sammy was very helpful and friendly, however had we realised just how far the walk into Oia was we would not have booked this accommodation.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a villa that gets the sun during the day.

Had an amazing time, the property owners were so hospitable and couldnt do enough for us, and prepared great breakfast for us every morning and Cici even made a cake especially for my dad. Apartments clean and spacious, and in a relaxed atmosphere, couldnt ask for more.

Even if at first it is a little hard to locate the villas, we were immediately won over by Sami and Sissy's broad smiles and warm hospitality. The rooms were beyond our expectations for such a reasonable price, spacious, very clean and with a pretty, minimalistic decor. Oia town is within a short walking distance, just right to allow you to return to absolute peace and quiet when you are done enjoying dinner and a stroll in the lively town. The ONLY bad part about our stay was...that we had to leave! Highly recommended and we will definitely be returning!

My family and I stayed in one of the family cave rooms for 7 nights. We absolutely loved it! Our rooms are clean & spacious. Cleaner always comes in and change our bed sheets and clean our rooms everyday. Couldn't ask for anything more! Where our accommodation is located is about 15 minutes walk from Oia. We actually didn't mind the walk as it gave us the opportunity to see the surroundings first hand otherwise wouldn't be able to if via car. Our host have been exceptionally wonderful and made our stay very comfortable! Lovely couple! They were happy to do our washing for free! Breakfast was superb!
We used public transport to get around the island. How easy it was to get around and it was
cheap too. The bus stop is only 5 minutes away.
We would definitely come back again. We can't wait until when they have installed a swimming pool by next year!

We enjoyed our stay in Ambelia very much!!! The hotel is a small oasis!!! Our cave villas was really spacious, clean with tastefully decoration and great view to the Aegean sea. The breakfast is unique with homemade cakes, omelets and jams!!!! (many choices /the best breakfast ever that we had so far)!!!! The hotel is located in the traditional village of Finikia, an easy walk to OIA (15 min. walk). But what makes the place so special is its hosts. The charming couple who run the hotel is just amazing!!! They are kind, extremely helpful, informative and full of suggestions!!! Thanks for everything, we shall definitely be back again!!!

Room Tip: amazing/spacious cave house!!!

We spent again a week at the beginning of June, because we were very happy with our stay last September and wanted to bring there our friends who were on a honeymoon.
This summer 2013 the accommodation has a great addition, an open air area for breakfast (or late night cups), complete with wifi access (they plan to have a swimming pool by next season). We had this time a huge apartment (3 rooms) with a spacious veranda and everything was just as super as last time. We shall definitely be back again.

We really enjoyed our stay in Ambelia. From the minute we arrived we were made to feel very welcome.

The cave villa was very spacious and very cool with everything we needed for our 8 night stay. The bed was large and nice and comfortable and the villa was spotlessly clean. Towels were changed daily and the owners offered to do any washing we had free of charge.
The breakfast area was lovely and there was something for everyone. The homemade jams/marmalade were beautiful, as were the cakes. We had breakfast at our villa on a few occasions too. We had freshly made omelette every morning too.

Ambelia is located in a traditional Greek village which we loved, there is a taverna in the village and it's very peaceful away from the hustle and bustle of Oia, but within easy walking distance taking 10mins. If you want to view the sunset from it's best vantage point it's about a 20 mins walk. This was not a problem for us and actually very enjoyable after dinner in Oia.

We would definitely recommend Ambelia, it was great value for money and we received a genuinely warm and friendly reception from the couple who manage the villas. They recommended many places for us to eat and visit and were happy to make reservations/book taxi to airport for us. Nothing was too much trouble.

Thank you for making our stay in Santorini truly memorable.
