“Well worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2012

This is a well-established and family-run reptile park which does fantastic work in educating Zanzibari schoolchildren about their endemic species.

Most of the animals and reptiles are held in small open-air enclosures so you get to be really close to them and you can handle them if you wish. I really enjoyed the visit, the guide (mohammed, the owner) was very knowledgeable and it was very interesting. They were many types of snakes, including python and boomslang, also chameleons, tree hyrax (didnt come out of its hut), nile monitor lizard, smaller lizard, duiker, rabbits and tortoises.

Good fun and interesting; well worth a visit if you are in south zanzibar or near jozani forest.

“Culturally appropriate proactive conservation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2011

Zala Sanke Park is an essential educational resource for the local Zanzibari School children who get to know how to handle their wildlife safely.
The fact that tourists are allowed to also visit ensures there are enough funds to subsidise the work being done. The guide was knowledgeable and clearly knew how to handle the animals.
There is a regular tunraround for the animals so that those on display are only held captive for a period before being retuned to their own habitat.
An excellent little zoo, that needs to be judged wihin its own context. Quite a different ballgame altogether from shipping animals across the world to zoological parks.

“Do not go to this attraction”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2010

Unfortunately we left feeling sorry for the reptiles and mamals housed in little concrete pens or poorly built cages. The guide we had jumped into each pen to grab the resident so they could be photographed and handled. This is all very well to get so close but as we were leaving another mini bus turned up with more tourists, poor animals have to put up with that all day!!!! The bush baby looked particularly sad.
Also the impression from the guide was not in the interest for the conservation of the animals but more to go out and take what they can from the bush to show off to tourists, as he told us "the chameleons die off quite quickly so he will go out to catch more". Need I say more!!!!
