“On the beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2012

Stayed here for 2 nights, a bit more expensive than others, but a great place to stay on the white sand beach. Very clean and nice. We found the food was very good at the restaurant/bar. The bartenders here didn't give change, unless asked for, so we went next door for cheaper drinks at the Kendwa Rocks.

Right by beach, like most of the other resorts in the area. It’s right next to Kendwa Rocks, which is a little cheaper – though I cannot comment on their facilities. I was set up in one of the newer bungalows which did not feel quite full/ready. There are only two thin sheets on the bed (each covering about half the bed), meaning you either have no blanket or no cover sheet. Not ideal, in my view. The room was good sized and comfortable overall. Helpful staff at front desk. The free breakfast takes place at the restaurant by the beach, though it’s very limited and not very filling – you can pay extra to get extra stuff. There is a SCUBA diving center on site.

My newer room also lacked a deposit box, which other rooms had, so I do not hold that against the place as a whole. The water also had a metallic taste and smell, which was probably due to the new pipes -- not drinking it; you could smell it in the running faucet and shower. So those are things to be careful about with the new rooms.

There is a shuttle that goes into Stone Town daily at 10am from the hotel – seems to be independently operated. It was $10US one-way. While they might pick you up to come back (they did for me), if they do not have enough riders, they might not do the return trip, which they would normally do at 4pm, but can vary depending on the driver. Drive time is over an hour each way.

There is apparently a beach party in the Sunset restaurant on Fridays. A beach party occurs at the adjacent Kendwa Rocks on Saturdays.

Overall, a good place to stay in the area. There are lots of touts in the area, but that's almost expected in the whole country. Kendwa Rocks next door has a good tourist / activities desk.

This place is being rebuild. Some of the rooms still have a smell of fresh paint and look very good, some have seen much better times. So make sure to see the room before and choose carefully. Location is great, some of the cottages are directly at the beach. Also I must mention their best efforts to make it safe here - there have been several security guys around all the time and they even watch over your belongings at the beach.
On the downside - breakfasts are more than simple - 3 pieces of fuit per person and eggs. After couple of days, you'll get sick of it. Also for the lunch and dinner options - we ended up going to other places, the food wasn't wery good over here.

I was left with a mixed feeling from the sunset bungalows. I stayed in a beach side bungalow.

Location is brilliant if you just want to relax. Straight on the beach which is white sand and clear water, everything you expect from a beach in Zanzibar. There is a small cafe serving drinks and food and parasols with beds on the beach.

The bungalow itself was nice, a nice sized bed in a good size room. A/C rooms are available (need to request). The rooms are in nice settings, like a beach garden.

Breakfast was poor. Included in the price is eggs the way you like it cooked with often stale bread, a couple pieces of fruit and coffee and juice. You can get a cooked breakfast for 12,000tsh.

Some staff were quite friendly whilst others (especially in the cafe) were just rude and didn't even smile or say Hello.

Security was pretty poor at dealing with the beach boys, they still approached tourists and the security guards would just sit there and do nothing. A firm "no I'm not interested" will usually get them away. Don't buy anything (tour or items) from anyone on the beach!!

There are often power cuts but they have a generator which powers at least the ceiling fan (not a/c). Usually the power is back on after an hour or so. It costs about $45-50 for transfer from airport. Get the hotel to sort it for you so you have a reputable driver to collect you at the airport.

Overall it was OK, but it was just too expensive for what it was (recently raised their prices). I met some others who had stayed at some bungalows at a resort just up from the sunset and said it was much better quality at a much better rate. Basically have a look at all the accommodation options before choosing Sunset.

We stayed in the rooms further back from the beach with no ocean view. Despite the location of the room it was still an enjoyable stay with the beach just a stroll away, and cocktails not too far either. The rooms were large with massive four-post bed as well as a fan and air-con. We utilised the laundry service and they were extremely prompt.

Wi-Fi is available at the restaurant/bar next door for a small cost.

We stayed in a new apartment, while a friend stayed in a beach bungalow. All rooms were very nice, clean, spacious with a balcony and patio respectively. one thing i remember was the staircase in the apartments is not to be used by kids due to big gaps they could fall through. Likewise the balconies are not exactly over-engineered for your safety.
The beach is lovely and the seafood phenomenal. I worked my way through the entire menu. Lively bars in the neighboring Kendwa Rocks and lots of souvenirs and massage available on the beach. Slight annoyance from the locals trying to sell you things but it is a tourist area.
My top tips would be; bring plenty of duty free booze as you cant buy any bottles locally and the bar can get a bit expensive if you drink every night. Also haggle for souvenirs as some of the prices quoted are ridiculous (learn prices in Swahili; elfu moja, etc.so you don't just look like a mug).
Diving in this area is great but if you get seasick skip the eggs and toast that morning or you'll be feeding the fishes.

Room Tip: Booking in advance in Zanzibar doesn't always guarantee a room anywhere, but it might save the r...

We stayed there for a week on January 2012, in one of the new apartments (not the bungalows on the beach). The rooms were nice and in good shape, and the entire place is really beautiful. We had a small balcony with view to the beach. The food in the restaurant isn't fancy, but it's ok and not very expensive. Kendwa is less crowded than Nungwi, which was perfect for us, so overall we enjoyed our stay and recommend the place for everyone.
