Elk Lake Lodge is only a few minutes driving time from Interstate 87, the Adirondack Northway, but it is more than a century away spiritually and psychologically. If you're looking for satellite TV, mini-bar, health club, sandy beach, golf course, five star dining, wifi, giant king-size beds, luxurious soaps and shampoos, water skiing, sightseeing, disco, or even radio(!) -- forget this place. What you get instead is a splendid sense of isolation in a pristine wilderness, with wonderful hiking, canoeing, swimming and kayaking. You also get an an anachronistic sense of camaraderie and community, in a resolutely old-fashioned setting, where the rooms are spartan and breakfast is at 7:00AM, but the lake is sweet and clean and without anything resembling a motor, and the hiking trails are, in many cases, typically Adirondack tough and challenging. It is not for everybody; but it was definitely for us....We look forward to returning next year.
The lake facing rooms in the main lodge are better. The cabin rooms are even better, but quite a bit...
