This place is the prototypical authentic surf shack. Directly located at the beach and run in conjunction with a windsurfing centre and a shop, it is the perfect hangout for surfers and those who want to enjoy the charming and relaxed atmosphere. People come in having their first beer after a day at the beach, or go there specifically for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
The owners do just many things right: The interior is tastefully and nicely designed, offering convenient seating as well as cosy little corners reminding of a lounge club. The air the place radiates is just right, the music fitting and appropriate.
The food is also good: Specifically recommended is the fish of the day, offering freshly caught fish for a very reasonable price. The Pizza is very reasonable if maybe not spectacular.
Josh Angulo himself, the guy offering the name to the place and presumably the owner, is a surfing star (having won world titles in waveriding and windsurfing). He is an approachable next-door guy and is very visible in the place, sometimes doing the dishes or chatting with customers. Staff is generally nice and attentive.
What you should not expect is a truly authentic Cape Verdean restaurant, but rather an international beach hangout with a distinctly Cape Verdean flavour. Maybe it says a lot that out of 11 nights we spent in Santa Maria, we went there no fewer than 6 times.
