“A touch of class in a (nearly) untouched environment!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2009

Just back from a week in Boa Vista...and in Casa Velha resort. After a difficult year we wanted to rest for a week in a friendly environment, without struggling with rain, wind and low temperatures...and this was it! We favoured a guesthouse rather than an international resort. This is a beautiful place, and a nice staff. Cristina, with her team, achieved a high level of professionalism in a destination that only starts getting acquainted with tourism and related services. As there is little to do and to visit on the island, the tastefully decorated house is a kind of jewel on a developing island, an invitation to relaxation. We advise to ask Cristina for any tip or contact...she knows all good addresses and reliable persons around...

Having just returned from a week stay at Casa Vehla i think it only fair to give a ' realistic' review .
The apartments are really great , well designed all be with lots of Ikea furniture!!! the issue is they are the only building in the area that is completed so you are in the middle of a building site. It is quite a way back from the beach and is a standalone building that is built around an inner courtyard so you dont have to see the mess that surrounds it !!!
You have to walk through mud and debris to get to the beach. Once you get to the beach go left and it is idyllic but sadly you have to return and walk thought the mess again to get home to your apartment.
The apartments obviously donot provide food so in the evening you have to walk into Sal Rei for dinner....again you have to walk in the pitch dark through rubble and mud and building mess to get to the road to the village. You may hire a car or quad bike to use to avoid this but this is not always what you want in the evening, its good to walk.
Once in the village you realise when you venture beyond the main square it is also one large construction site, with all buildings surrounding the village a mass of grey block unfinished building really destroying any character sal rei may have had. Its not a pretty or clean village but does have a few good seafood restaurants.
The apartments do provide a well appreciated breakfast in the little cafe.
However the staff were non attentive, and spent most of the time chatting and in fact in the mornings frequently had LOUD arguments about the cleaning n the courtyard which was very disturbing.
Probably you will be booking this as an independent traveller as I dont think Casa Velha uses tour operators and to really get the beauty and tranquility or Boa Vista i would look at more beachfront options. The weather is perfect sunshine and great breezes make sunbathing a pleasure

We had a fantastic week - everything about Boa Vista, Casa Velha and the penthouse apartment was perfect for us. Boa vista is currently largely undeveloped and uncommercialised and it is a privledge to be able to see it and spend time in it "as it is". The staff at Casa Velha are first class, the apartment is large, spacious and equipped with everything you need for your holiday. You can get breakfast in the bar everyday and drinks as necessary(!). It is just a short walk to both the beach and the centre of Sal Rei which has plenty of good places to eat and the rest of the island is easily explored on a quad bike. A perfect place to chill out and do nothing!

We had a wonderful time in Boa Vista. My husband and I (50th birthday) went to completely get away from everything, together. It was just the sort of holiday I had hoped it would be. The apartment was wonderful, with total privacy and peace and quiet. There is very little to do so only go if you want each others company and the odd excursion if you need amusing. We spoke very very little English for the whole week, had no news or mobile signal for the entire stay which was fantastic. We used Euros the whole time. We took cash with us so did not need a bank. Everything is expensive there so take snacks with you ie: cereal bars, nuts, biscuits and the like. You can get bottled water easily - we used it the whole time. I actually got a tummy bug on the last day which was unfortunate. Medically there is very little on the island, medical centre in Sal Rei - we had no experience with this.

Not speaking Portuguese we did find this a little difficult. They speak mostly Portuguese and Italian, However, we got used to finding out things for ourselves. We did a lot of walking. Sal Rei is such a strange little place it took us a while to find things. The first couple of days we were attracting attention as we seemed to be the only white people around apart from three other people at Casa Velha. However, after that we were ignored as part of the town. The Cape Verde people can be a little unfriendly which we decided was because they are shy. The weather was great temperature wise - 25 degrees each day, the wind was very strong which by the end of the week was getting to me slightly. Sal Rei is not a clean town, far from it as rubbish is strewn everywhere - something which will have to be addressed if the tourist industry is to succeed. However, everything is very slow pace there and so time will tell. The slow pace rubs off and it took us no time at all to relax and forget about the rest of the world.

Casa Vehla was super, we loved the terrace and views, as we stayed in the Penthouse at the top this was just perfect. It was so nice to be able to go back to the apartment and have coffee and read and enjoy the tranquility and privacy very important to us. We thought that Casa Velha was kept beautifully clean and so romantically lit at night. with the inner courtyard. Breakfast available in the tiny downstairs cafe was delightful and all in keeping with the charm (almost Colonial). This cafe doubled up as a bar in the evening and it was very relaxing to spend an hour or two there with a drink and background music..
We hired a 4x4 for two days from a place in the town, there are several and went to the two absolutely beauftiful beaches down south. Had them both to ourselves which made us feel they were ours. It was really just like a desert island and once off road we did not pass a soul all day. Unbelieveable. It was a little worrying on occasion as there are very few sign posts and many times following tyre tracks in the sand was the only indication of the way to go. Not a trip for those who like a comfortable drive or have a bad back!

Around Casa Vehla there is a lot of building work going on, quite an eye opener as Health and Safety is obviously not in their vocabulary! However, you have to bear in mind that essentially it is an island of sand, sea, surf and desert. There is very little or no rain and so no greenery at all except for the odd oasis - these are amazing.

Well I hope that has been helpful. The only negative aspect was the Thompson flight - very cramped for a 6 hour trip. However, that would not put me off going back tomorrow!

Oh yes, there have been some reports regarding attacks on tourists - we were aware of this before we went and so took precautions like not carrying too much money, careful not to display camera etc. We had no trouble at all - the only place we did not venture to in the vehicle was to the wreck on the north coast due to car hire people advising us not to.

We had a fantastic Xmas and New Year in Cape Verde staying in Casa Velha made it so much more special! I would recommend this Casa Velha to everyone. It is just a short walk from the main square.

Cristina, the owner of Casa Velha could not of done enough for us. She catered for all our needs and was very friendly and helpful. We stayed in the Penthouse appartment the outside area was lovely and had views to die for!

There were a few resturants in the main square, we would recommend eating in Naidas, the food was excellent! We would also recommend Spinguera where we spent Xmas day and night. Very relaxing and great food also.

The shipwreck is also a fantastic view it felt very surreal and was great to see up so close. The beaches were to die for and some of the nicest beaches we have ever seen on our travels.

We would love to go back in years to come and see the progress on developments within Boa Vista and vist the other Islands.

We were lucky enough to stay at the penthouse apartment, which is like a romantic honeymoon venue. The apartment has fantastic sea views and nobody overlooks you. To sit on the bedroom veranda watching the sun setting over the sea, then in BED watching the yacht lights twinkling in the bay was truly memorable.

Casa Velha is clean, new, light and has Portuguese colonial character. Its small café and bar seem to be an attractive venue for the local elite.

We found the staff spoke limited english, but want to help, so a portuguese or italian phrasebook is handy.

Estoril beach is less than 200 yards walk, with beach restaurants and the windsurf club. To the left is unspoilt terrain (loads of baby turtle tracks down to the sea!) To the right is Sal Rei with its traditional buildings. Lots of new building is taking place.

The penthouse has an enormous terrace, ideal for a get-together with family or friends, so next time we are thinking of bringing the family (the penthouse can sleep 4), or suggesting to friends that they rent an extra apartment.

  • Liked — Clean, new, sea views, colonial character
  • Disliked — Language problems.
