“Nice relaxing place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

I have read a lot of reviews about this hotel and many of them are true. The hotel is large but very friendly. The staff are great very helpful and efficient in all they do.

The waiting staff in the restaurant are very good and the bar staff are very fast in the service they give. We ate at all of the restaurants and my only thing would I would say is that it would be a nice touch to have one restaurant with waitress service. Otherwise the food was always very fresh and replenished constantly.

We had a room in block 2 which was a couple of minutes walk from reception but it was very quiet and had a lovely seaview. The room its was clean and well kept - the bath towels were a little on the small side but all seemed very new. The beds were comfy and changed everyday.
Just a little surprised that there was not tea and coffee available in the rooms but it was all around the hotel.

The pool areas were all very clean and the sunbeds though not perfect were clean and fairly new as were the pool towels always clean and fresh.

The only real bugbear I had was that I do like an iron on holiday (sad I know) but when I called reception to ask for one I was told that I had to go to the shop and pay for one - it was a 50 euro deposit and 2 euros a day - this for a five star hotel is really not acceptable. This is a service which should be given free not at a charge. The only other issue is the same as a lot of reports and that is that Thomson do not have any entertainment on the flights - I can understand this as they planes are quite old and small but they should at least offer a complimentary drink I was also shocked when they offered a pillow and blanket at a charge of £5 and you can take this with you. - to me that is really unacceptable.

Otherwise we really did enjoy our stay at the hotel it really did relax us and recharged our batteries - we would cetainly think about going again. Do try it I am sure you will have a good time.

Stay of 24/11 until 01/12/2012 in Riu Karamboa and there is 3 x but only better. Small airport very quickly through passport control, hotel on 5 min from airport. Fast friendly check-in. they speak different languages. We always go in the same period and it fell that the much busier was than previous years. The weather was also not like other periods: always white clouds alternated with cloudy to just a cloudy all day but you don't Tan. On whole week 1 day full sun and that is rare. But the temperature there is average 35gr and even in the evening you have no shirt. Eat varied and tasty, staff super friendly, there is the whole day cleaned everywhere. The beer, fine wine what less, cocktails on the one bar (this to nightclub) it is already better than the other but what you want. Sunbeds should not be reserved for 9u unless you there remains and everyone loves it. These are more than sufficient also to the beach. There can be hiked along the beach to delicious in Sal Rei where not so much to do. Quad tour, surfing, etc you can reserve on the beach to the hotel and is very reliable. Room 1211 sea view very quiet though some more remote facilities. Before room 0128 close to everything. In short we are going back next year for sure it is an excellent beach holiday in the winter with a very good hotel.

Room Tip: 1211 quite room 1ste floor 5 min from restaurants 0128 groudfloor near to the facylities

Our first time to Cape Verde. This was our 27th all inclusive holiday taken in properties ranging from 2* to 5* in places all over the world, so we reckon we know what to look for. This hotel is advertised by Thomson as 5* Platinum (whatever that means). In reality, the hotel is about 4*. We have stayed in 5* properties which are a definite notch up on the Karamboa. For anyone out there who thinks that you are staying in a 5* internationally rated hotel, you are not. The Karamboa probably comes in around 3.5*. That is not to say that we did not enjoy our stay - we did.

The Thomson flight from Manchester and back was every bit as bad as others have reported - the only good point was that they were on time. The problem here is that there is no incentive for Thomson to improve the service as there is basically no competition. Second, Thomson's "top company" - TUI, have announced record profits recently - so why put money into improving something which people are using (whether they like it or not). The one consolation was that from speaking to fellow guests from Germany - they had similarly awful flights with TUI. So Thomsons, get a life and give your suffering passengers more leg room and cleaner seats. I presonally am not bothered about the lack of seat back entertainment but would gladly sacrifice this for more comfy seating and better food. Thomsons say you get a "delicious 4 course meal". Actually one of the courses is a bread roll and a pat of butter!! My advice is that you have a good meal before you board the plane both going out and coming home. Then it won't matter if the meal on the plane is grim.

On arrival at the hotel we were offered an upgraded room. At first we were undecided as the room was on the ground floor and in one of the blocks furthest from the lobby and restaurants. Anyway we said we would take it. The room was a suite. We had a large bedroom with walk in wardrobe, a lounge with settee and fridge, a separate bathroom with bath with shower over, a "his n hers" wash hand basin arrangement and a separate loo with bidet. There was tons of storage space - we had 18 drawers in various units in the 2 rooms. We had a lot of space but really the lounge was a waste as the flat screen TV was in the bedroom. Also there were no other chairs in the rooms except the settee so if you wanted to watch the TV you either had to sit on the bed or bring in one of the plastic chairs from the patio.

The rooms were kept clean but the grouting round the tiles at the shower end of the bath was black and needed cleaning. The quality of the bath towels was poor - small size, and often thin - even holey on one occasion - not the sort of towels I expect to get in a 5* property. There was tons of really hot water in the bathroom and the shower was excellent. The location of the room was on the outer rim of the property but even so, it only took us about 3-4 minutes stroll to get to the lobby or restaurants so no problem. If you are thinking about booking a suite - think carefully as Thomsons want another £30+ each per night. In our view, definitely not worth it. People on this site say about rooms having a sea view. In fact, very few do. Ours did not but it was not a problem for us.

We thought the food very good in all the restaurants. We went to the Buda three times, and the other two speciality restaurants, once each. We did not think the African restaurant was very "African" having eaten on that continent on many occasions. Again, all the restaurants are self - service which is not something we have encountered in other 5* all inclusives' speciality restaurants. I expect waiter service in these restaurants. Drinks were fine and it was handy being able to serve yourself beer and wine in some bars and in the dining room.

The staff are excellent - always smiling, cannot do enough for you and efficient, too. Full marks to those working in the lobby bar who seemed to be able to serve 3 or 4 people at once and get all the drinks right!! Also full marks to the manager of the Las Dunas restaurant who I saw successfully challenging men for going into the restaurant for lunch not wearing a shirt. Without exception they all went and got dressed properly. The hotel does have a dress code for the main restaurant in the evening but this is hardly adhered to and a few people looked downright scruffy as if they had just come off the beach.

The common areas in the hotel are kept very clean, including the loos, expecially the ones by the beach.

We chose to sit on the beach. However, the sunbeds on the beach at this hotel are the worst I have ever encountered anywhere in the world - the webbing fabric on them (where you put your bum) has stretched beyond all belief. Fortunately we had taken garden chair cushions with us so that helped to relieve the discomfort but we still had to climb out of the chairs. There are plenty of umbrellas on the beach for the much needed shade. We did not sit around the pool as it is too noisy for us and also there is very little personal space between the sunbeds, although the sunbeds around the pool looked newer and in better shape than those on the beach.

The beach is great and you can walk for miles - which we did. The sea is pretty rough and most days there was a red flag showing. The sand is clean and with large sand dunes reaching down to the water's edge.

We had gone to crash out for 2 weeks and therefore did not go on any trips - not even into Sal Rei, the local town.

The whole experience was very relaxing - we kept having to ask ourselves what day is was!! We had near perfect weather, with about 5 minutes rain one morning. There was nearly always a good breeze which means that you do not sweat as you can do sometimes in the Caribbean. Did not see any mozzies and hardly ever saw a fly. The nearest we got to seeing wildlife was a couple of dogs on the beach, a donkey and its foal on the beach, a gheko and many sparrows.

In all, despite the issues I have mentioned which merit improvement, this is an excellent location for a November holiday.

Room Tip: Don't worry about being on the outer edge of the property - nowhere is far from the lobby and re...

Just back from a week stay at the Rui Karamboa. The hotel was very clean and very spacious. It is a very large hotel approx 2500 people at their max but all the 4 restaurants and relaxing areas are well spaced out so that it doesn't feel too busy. Our room was in excellent condition with two very large singles, a settee and chair and a balcony overlooking the sea. - Perfect!

The are 4 restaurants so food is plentiful and lots of choice - you could never go hungry! As the hotel is all inclusive, there is plenty of free drink too ! The staff were very helpful and friendly and very quick at serving you, nothing was a problem to them. We had 7 days of sun shine, in the 80's and the evening averaged about 75deg. Perfect for a relaxing holiday! The 4 hour Quad biking experience around the Ireland is a must! hilarious, dirty and great fun!

Room Tip: Huge hotel with lots of space around you, large room, great bedding and bathroom. On first floor but...

Lovely time - great weather - good food and plenty of places to relax out of sun - too hot to lie out for long in direct heat!

Comfortable and spacious rooms - lovely hot shower.

Went with a couple of friends and had a relaxing time. Weather consistently hot even into the late evening. Great to be able to sit out till late and be lovely and warm.

Really good selection of books there to read and leave for others to read afterwards. I think I read at least 5 books during my two weeks' vacation.

Myself and my husband have just returned from holiday with a couple of friends and have had the best two weeks. Please ignore the negative reviews I read them before we went and was quite anxious, there was nothing to worry about. The hotel is clean and well looked after, the food is plentiful with plenty of choice if you can't find anything to eat then I feel you are being too fussy. The staff are lovely and nothing is to much trouble, it is a big hotel but does not feel too busy. There was four of us and we managed to get sun beds together without going down to the pool at an early time. I would recommend the walk down to Sal Rai with Jamie, along with doing the 4 x 4 trip you get to go all over the island and see the real Boa Vista.

I would go back without a doubt, thoroughly enjoyed it and returned very relaxed.

We spent a couple of weeks here in November, we knew what to expect having read reviews. Thomson sell the hotel as 5* but it really is 4* and you're not paying for 5* or Caribbean prices so you get what you pay for. It was a good option for us as only a 5.5-6 hr flight and no jet lag, compared to the Caribbean 9-11 hrs. Plus weather was great, sun, some cloud and a few spots of rain on a couple of evenings, lovely and warm. We have been to the Dominican Republc and Jamaica at this time of year and had the tail end of hurricanes/tropical storms.
The hotel is large, the staff are friendly (much more so than those we've previously experienced in hotels in Egypt). Food was good, lots and lots of choice, speciality restaurants were a bit disappointing as not table service and lacked atmosphere but the food was good (we went to the African and Buda/Asian). Large pool area, little reserving of beds, we had no problems at 9/9.30am and still beds available quite a bit later.
Beach is large and lovely to walk during the day, most days the sea was rough, amazing waves, we enjoyed watching the kite and wind surfers.
Drinks, hit and miss, some cocktails good others no so. Wine hmmm, certaily not your Sav Blanc, I found the white wine bearable with ice and maybe a dash of soda, same with Rose, I'm not a red wine drinker so didn't try that. Husband thought the beer was ok. He also used the gym which was ok. We had massages at the spa that were good and also used the sauna and jaucuzzi.
Room was large with separate sitting area and bathroom and balcony, no problems with it at all.
Lots of activities during the day if that's your thing. A show each night - mostly by the animation team - although not really my cup of tea they worked hard and again friendly.
Flight as others said.
All in all a great holiday and would go back.

Room Tip: We had a high floor a long way from reception which meant it was quiet and had a sea view
