The Golden Dragon, in what was until recently St. James Square (now ShopRite Square), is one of our favorite places to eat. The buffet is extensive, offering great variety, and the seating area is large but quiet, with decent privacy in the many booths. The entrance exudes good vibes, with large goldfish swimming in a tank and Chinese paper decorations overhead. It's not the place for a romantic dinner but rather seems to attract small family groups. Every time we visit, we see some of the old mainstays on the buffet, but there are often new things like vegetable tempura. There are three kinds of soup (egg drop, wonton, hot-and-sour -- I always have at least two bowls. The quasi-salad bar offers prepared salads (like cucumber-onion) as well as things like shrimp, calamari salad, and oysters on the shell. Then, on another trip to the buffet you progress to three bars of hot food, which include some whimsical things like "mini hot dog" as well as the usual beef or chicken with vegetables in sauce dishes, DELICIOUS spring rolls in a kind of flaky phyllo pastry (don't miss them), salmon, and other seafood dishes. Years ago the Golden Phoenix offered king crab legs, but no more. There are also two dessert bars, with fruit (oranges, melons) as well as cookies, cake, etc, If this isn't enough, there is a Mongolian stir-fry area, usually unmanned, but if you ask someone will come and prepare food to order. Also, a limited array of sushi, and self-serve soft ice cream. At lunch all this costs under $9, and you always leave satisfied, with a full belly!
