5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2011

We walk the Gorge Trail on a regular basis up top. What a wonderful walk as you overlook the power and majesty of the Niagara Gorge. This is a great walk on a dry day, warm or cold you'll be ok if you dress for the temps. It can be a little muddy after a rain.

“Trekking is good!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2011

My husband and I hiked one portion of this trail and found it very picturesque if a bit muddy. The views were phenomenal and easy. A good exercise for the mind and spirit. Well, and body too!

“Solitude and 2-1/2 miles of Incredible Class 6 Rapids”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2011

If you love hike (as we do) don't miss hiking the gorge trail!
The guide book lists the center of the trail as unpassible due to rockslides and that makes enjoyment of the gorge difficult without multiple trips down and back out of the gorge. Hopefully the trail will be repaired next spring and everyone can once again enjoy hiking down from the Falls past the Whirlpool, and down to Devil's Hole!
Being quite adventureous we bushwacked through the slide (no worse than some other off-trail adventures in the Grand Canyon and easier than one in Glacier) and had a great 14 mile trek within a rock throw of rapids who's size and features dwarfed every set of rapids on the upper Grand Canyon!
Not only a great hike, with incredible scenery; but I don't think we saw 30 people in the 7 miles!

“Beautiful, but see notes for small children”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2011

We went on this trail as it is free and were not disappointed! Great views all along the way of the river and gorge. We hiked from an area farther north and went along the river to the whirlpool area (a couple of kilometers). We went with young children (8,6,3) and would probably not go again with kids that young. They enjoyed it, but we had to them along the way especially along places that were slippery or close to the edge of the rapids.

Your best bet would be to park where the whirlpool and cable car are and then desend there. That trail and those steps are no problem. But if you try hiking along the river, it is more difficult and the way is not clearly marked.

Still, it was a blast. My 8 year old said, "This is best vacation ever!" You can't beat that for free!

“more Gorge Trail info”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2011

Friends were just asking me about the Trail as they are going to visit. Thought I would update a few things -
1- parking at Whirlpool and Devil's Hole parks is free.
2 - there are bathrooms at booth parks, you have to look for them, at Devils Hole they are over the pedestrian bridge and to the right from the parking lot
3 - the hike is on uneven terrain, but it isn't as rough as the website makes it sound. Definitely sneakers, no flip flops. The stairs at Whirlpool entrance are much more of a real stair system than Devil's Hole.
4 - website http://www.niagarafallsstatepark.com/Activities_NatureLoversGuide.aspx
5 - while the trail at river lever from DH to Whirlpool is only one mile, it does take about an hour roundtrip b/c going up and down the stairs/escarpment takes time, plus you will want to stop and admire the river
