I visit friends in Newburgh about once a year and we go out to dinner. This year we hit an absolute grand slam. I did not know what to expect when when I realized the restaurant was on Broadway. I'd simply never dined in that area before. My understanding is the area has it share of problems, but was at one time a very thriving and "the place to be" in Newburgh. When driving east bound on Broadway, one enjoys a beautiful view of the Hudson. I was pleasantly surprised when we entered. The decor was in very good taste and it was apparent the entire restaurant had been recently refurbished. I loved the classic, but modern feel the renovations brought. The new feel that still embodied the historic significance of the area. A delightful young lady waited on our table, and explained in mouth watering detail the many specials they had to offer. Her clarity, accent and smile brought a very nice charm. The menu was brief and basic, but the variety of specials described in such good detail made for a tough choice. I decided on the sea bass, which they offered to fillet in the kitchen, at the table or allow me to self fillet. I opted have it brought out already filleted. This sea bass was grilled to perfection, as were the accompanying vegetables and roasted potatoes. I love sea bass, have had it many times, but this was the best preparation I've ever enjoyed. Plentiful in size but light in consumption; for me was the exact right fill. My appetite was satisfied, but not overly so, to where I still had room dessert. Like the specials, there were several good desserts to choose from which were each described to us in delicious detail. I opted for a dessert (I can't remember what it was called) that included ice cream, coconut, and mango. I was most looking forward to the coconut but I must say it was the mango that made this dessert so delightful. When I commented to my friend how delicious the mango was, he concurred. He had ordered a different dessert but one that also was served with mango on the side. He attributed the great taste to a light strawberry sauce that had been drizzled on top. Upon leaving the restaurant, I asked my friends, "Can I make a dinner request for my visit next year?" as I pointed to the El Solar Cafe sign. They both responded enthusiastically, "Absolutely! We'd love to come here again!"
