“Magical "Bavarian" Retreat in Upstate New York”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

I first laid eyes on Mohonk Mountain House when a new friend sent me a photo of her "summer place". I had never laid eyes on my friend, Clare, at that point, but judging from the looks of her summer retreat, I knew that we would definitely meet face-to-face, hopefully at this marvelous place! It took nearly a year, but indeed we did meet at Mohonk Mountain House.
Clare grew up on nearby Orange Lake, about 35 minutes south of Mohonk, and spent her teen years hiking and climbing the rocky crags of this mountaintop treasure at every opportunity. Clare and her friends also spent many wonderful summer days swimming in Mohonk Lake and nearby Lake Minnewaska so in a very real sense, Mohonk Mountain House was, and remains, her "summer place"!
Only 90 minutes north of New York City, Mohonk is in a world apart and is reminiscent of Bavarian chalets from centuries gone by. The hotel was built between1879 and 1910 by brothers, Albert and Alfred Smiley. The property has played host to US presidents and foreign dignitaries and was featured in a picture print by Currier & Ives. Adjoining the 2200 acre resort is the Mohonk Preserve with more than 80 miles of hiking and horseback riding trails and over 7,000 acres of the best hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and climbing found anywhere in the world. The cliffs of the Shawangunk Mountains of Mohonk provide truly world class rock climbing.
There are several ways to experience Mohonk. Since a reservation is required to be admitted through the gate at the bottom of the mountain, make an advanced reservation for a room, or the spa, or reserve a table for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The spa reservation is most inexpensive and will gain you access to the resort for the day. You may also purchase a Grounds Pass for the day or the weekend (http://www.mohonk.com/activities/dayguests/hiking) but you really shouldn't miss the "magic" of the beautiful old building's interior amenities. Once admitted with a reservation, you have many options for dining and you have full access to the lake and to the hiking and rock climbing...there are fees to rent the boats. The Lemon Squeeze rock scramble is a little challenging, but it is a must if you are reasonably fit.
The rooms are expensive at Mohonk, but the price does include breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as access to most of the amenities. No matter if you are staying for the week or for only a day, you will always fondly remember Mohonk Mountain House.

I've just spent three wonderful days at this resort and was very pleased. The resort is about 150 years old; and as a result, has a feel to it of the past--musty and dark. But if you can get past that, the amenities offered are wonderful--many hiking trails, beautiful gardens, horseback riding, horse and buggy ride, row boating, paddle boats, swimming, golf, magnificent architecture, grounds, etc. My friends and I literally stuffed our faces because the food was so good.

The one striking observation we made was that the entire staff and pretty much all the guests were a very homogeneous group--no one of color. That is not something you see often in this day and age. We kept discussing that point, but it did not distract from the pleasant time we had.

Room Tip: The lake view is lovely.

Took my beau here for his 40th birthday. Setting was beautiful and the house was as advertised, old world charm. Some parts needed some work but I was willing to overlook that given the age of the property. Food was average and lukewarm. Ladies bathroom on main floor could use a good scrubbing. Service was good but not memorable. Our room was clean and the bed was comfy. The indoor pool was nice and clean. For the price we paid after all was said and done it should have been a stellar experience. Overnight guests should not be charged for any of the outdoor amenities. And it would have been more worth the price if alcohol or at least local wine was included. In short, I scrimped and saved for this occasion and was left wanting more for the money. There were a few ridiculous charges too like an overnight gratuity fee in addition to regular gratuities. An honest review from a well traveled middle class person. We won't be going back. Even the beauty of the place can't replace the overpriced nature of this "all inclusive".

Beautiful grounds and lovely rooms at this over 100 year old hotel & resort. You can swim in the lake. They made a beach and swimming area, complete with diving board. Lake is large and there are row boats, canoes, pedal boats for use. Food is mostly average, but the BBQ lunch served outside is exactly what you would expect. Hamburgers, hot dogs, etc. I highly recommend the kids club for the under 13 set.

To cancel a reservation took three phone calls, endless waits with obnoxious ads playing in my ear, a "receptionist" answering the reservations line and saying that she couldn't do what I wanted, but that someone would call me back, and the same thing happening again (I missed the first call back, being a busy person) -- and I only then managed to cancel by getting irate. AND then I was told I'd be charged $25.00 for the pleasure. (I was canceling weeks in advance.) Make sure NEVER to reserve here if, like most people, you are someone whose plans may change.

Dear crulezim,

We are so sorry to hear about your recent experience and we can certainly understand your frustration. We do make every effort to respond immediately to all calls and we are sorry that we didn’t get through to you right away. Our phones have been particularly busy this summer with our recent recognition as the Number One Resort Spa in the United States and as the Number Six Spa in the World (Condé Nast and Travel + Leisure).

After a two night stay the smoke smell from the fireplace could not be eliminated hence the room stunk. No other room was suggested by management. The fine dining was horrible. Food was tasteless and deserts made with lard! This was a get-away for my sister's birthday and we were very disappointed. Management tried to compensate with a 15% discount. That wasn't even
the amount for tax on the bill. Overrated and very expensive. Their spa was also of fair in quality.

Room Tip: Get a room without a fireplace. I was told to try and face the lake or mountains which is an extra f...

We drove a distance off the nearest highway as we wanted to see Mohonk so we could decide on and plan our future stay.
We were stopped at guard gate and informed it would cost $25 per person to be able to drive up to the resort.

Can someone from Mohonk please write in and justify $50 to visit?

Thinking now, it would have been better if the guard would simply say "sorry, guests only. Here's a brochure and a discount offer. We do hope you'll come back and stay with us ". Charging an "admission fee" is an unwelcoming first impression for potential guests.

Gave ratings of 5 because we understand your reputation is excellent. Wanted to voice a concern in the most pleasant way possible. Thank you.

Dear ljwnek,

Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to explain our policy. We appreciate that you voiced your concern in such a lovely way!

I am so sorry that you weren’t able to see the resort after driving such a distance. The $25 per person fee is for our Grounds Pass. Purchase of the pass gives you access to our grounds (award-winning gardens, 85 miles of trails, carriage roads, and rock scrambles with spectacular views) for the entire day. This fee includes self-parking and, in season, a shuttle bus to our Day Visitor area at the Picnic Lodge.

We do have to limit the number of visitors on property to ensure a relaxing and enjoyable vacation for all our guests. Because of this, we are unable to allow guests to drive-up to explore the resort without a reservation (either a grounds pass, meal, spa, or overnight reservation is required).

Again, I apologize for the inconvenience this caused you. Please email me at kmartello@mohonk.com if you have any other questions—I hope we’ll be welcoming you to our mountaintop as a guest soon.

Sincerely,

Katie Martello
