I've been going to Mohonk for over 30 years. My parents took me when I was a kid and now I go with my wife every year. It's thousands of acres containing many miles of hiking trails, from easy walks around the lake to rock scrambles up to Skytop Tower. The lake is the only living mountain lake in the area (acid rain killed the others, but here the limestone has neutralized the acid). The Mountain house itself is a National Historic Landmark still owned by the founding Smiley family. It's a beautiful building with rooms ranging from contemporary to Victorian (with a balcony and working fireplace). The main dining room is enormous. The west wall is curved and mostly glass giving a beautiful view of the valley between the Shawangunk mountain ridge (on which Mohonk sits) and the Catskills in the distance. Breakfast and Lunch (with a brunch on Sundays) are lavish buffets. Breakfast includes made-to-order omelets and fresh pancakes and waffles with all the trimmings. The items on the long buffet tables vary daily. Lunch always includes a carving station, soups, and everything also varies daily. Dinner is a sit-down affair with a choice of salad or appetizer, entree and dessert. The menu rotates through one week, and changes every season. Coffee, tea (including the 4:00 tea), iced tea, lemonade (which is excellent!), and soda are included; only alcoholic beverages are extra (a lot extra). It's a pricey place (especially the spa, which was added a few years ago), but I feel like it's worth it. There's also a golf course (nominal greens fees), tennis, basketball, croquet, lawn bowling, and swimming (year round in the pool, seasonal in the lake). There's also seasonal horseback riding and horse drawn carriage rides (small fees). And I haven't listed it all! Check out the web site!
