First of all, I want to address some of the negative comments people have made here. I think they're way too harsh and they scare people like me out of unique experiences, so I'm going to offer a fair and balanced one.
Kate's is cute. More than cute -- it's like a refined step into Pee-Wee's Playhouse. Given the aesthetic of the B-52's this should not come as a big shock. Also, this is Catskills Mountains. If you're looking for something a bit more refined then head up the road a mile to the nice fancy resort and you'll be happy.
We were somewhat anxious after reading some of the bad reviews here, but pleasantly surprised when we arrived. First, the front desk IS there most of the day. In fact we arrived three hours before check-in and were pleasantly surprised to be invited into our room early. The decor is exactly what you'd expect -- 50's shabby chic complete with a flat screen TV with a few cable channels and a WIFI password (be forewarned --you're probably only going to get it in one room and have to drive to Woodstock to get a solid signal). Also, there's signs everywhere when you get into your room. Do your own dishes, pick up after yourself, don't smoke, and don't flush anything but toilet paper down the toilet -- a bit annoying but effective.
As far as fun, we had a blast. We spent the day in Woodstock, went up to the Tibetan monestary, then came back and barbequed out front (rooms 1-5 have a table and chairs out front and all guests are welcome to use the picnic tables and grills (which come with utensils). There's even a 24 hour fruit stand across the street that basically functions as an organic grocer/farmer's market/bakery. You can get everything here from fruit, veggies, homemade marinades, preserves, pie, bread, wood, charcoal, beverages, etc.
On top of that there's a meadow behind the cabins that right next to a large stream which makes for a killer photo opp. We made dinner, had a few drinks, played some of the games provided in the room and had lots of laughs watching the VHS videos provided.
Ultimately the only two bad things I can say is it does smell musty (folks, if you've been to the Catskills then you know this is true of pretty much every historical hotel, B&B and cabin within a 100 mile radius -- which is all easily solved by opening the windows and a little Lysol). Secondly, when I woke up in the morning and went to make coffee there were a few ants on the counter. (I don't know if they tagged along with our fresh veggies or came in another way, but it wasn't a deal breaker.)
I could totally see a couple getting married here and hosting their own wedding party out back AND it's really pup-friendly (as is the town of Woodstock) which makes traveling for a weekend a lot more fun when you can bring every member of your family. We're really excited to bring more friends and come back in the fall after the leaves turn -- amazing photo opps aplently and a good time had by all.
