A beauty salon nail technician told me about HARVEST's large family-style portions and that is was a must-try place. So on our short trip to Montauk, we made sure to go to HARVEST. Indeed worth every cent.
Harvest on Fort Pond was a bit difficult to find at night. It's located just OFF the Main Street stretch of Route 27 in Montauk. When going east on Route 27, make a LEFT at the gas station called, EMPIRE. The restaurant is just down the road.
We walked in and people were singing HAPPY BIRTHDAY to somebody at the bar. Since it was already dark outside, we weren't able to see the pond -- but we sat down and noticed all the pictures that decorated the place. Each of which was another incredible image of the ocean or the beach. Very tasteful and thoughtfully planned space. Already we had a good feeling and we hadn't ordered yet.
When we decided to try two appetizers and two entrees, the server advised us that it was WAY TOO MUCH food. That for two people, one appetizer and one entree would be enough. This was only annoying because I'm a vegetarian and my partner is not. So we agreed to try a salad and pasta, along with wine. Since we were famished, we also thought we'd try the famous garlic french fries. The server smiled and said that she'd be happy to pack up the leftovers.
She took our order and brought our drinks along with some bread to start. Fresh bread that was enjoyed with some olive oil and grated cheese. The salad was YUMMY in it's simplicity. Mesclun salad with grilled portobello and 3 lightly fried balls of goat cheese. And it seemed there were a few dressings that were put under the salad -- so the flavors were not overwhelming. I definitely recommend starting your meal off with this salad -- the quantity was enough for three to four people.
Main course - Penne with Sautéed Asparagus, Mushrooms and Mascarpone Cheese. Not as heavy as one might assume. And the quantity was a POUND of pasta -- easily enough for four people.
And the side of garlic fries was huge -- and delicious. Thin fries with fresh roasted garlic sprinkled to give it a very strong flavor. Good for garlic lovers.
The best part of everything was how fresh everything tasted. We wondered if they used ingredients from a farm nearby. The basic ingredients used were so good that I can't imagine anything not tasting good on their menu. If they always have such fresh raw materials, then this is a great spot for sure!
They are definitely able to cater to people with dietary restrictions or concerns. There are a few good options for vegetarians -- fewer for vegans. As for the price, when you share the items with four or more people, you def get more bang for your buck. However, we did notice that EVERY table was walking out with leftovers -- and we had another full meal the next day. Keeping that in mind, it's a good deal -- but moreover, for the service, quality and atmosphere, it is definitely worth repeat visits.
Unfortunately we were too full for desserts but when we saw the stuff being served to other tables, we vowed to come again to try out more of their dishes.
