As a rule, when one writes a letter it is usually due to some complaint, I've decided to write this letter because of a positive experience.
We have been vacationing for the past 2 years at the Sands Motel in Montauk. We had a room with a great view of the ocean. The staff was always very accommodating; recommending things to see and places to eat. All the shops and restaurants are within easy walking distance. The room was very clean and housekeeping was there daily. We stayed for a week and had a wonderful time! We have already booked a reservation for next year.
We travel from Atlanta, Georgia to Montauk, N.Y.; a long trip but very worthwhile!

Where do I begin..I never even got the chance to stay there and had a problem. I'll try to make it brief. Was visiting in Montauk and stopped in to see if certain dates were available. I met Diane (who I might add had absolutely no personality whatsoever, I tried to make conversation with her and she was very cut and dry almost to the point of being quite rude ) I gave her two week-ends that I asked about and I told her that I would be in-touch if these dates were ok with my fellow travelers. I was told about the 5 day deposit limit and understood clearly what it meant. I never got back to them because the dates were not good for the people I was traveling with, that was at the end of June. Than on July 8trh I called to make a reservation once again, we booked the dates for July 26 - 27 & 28th, which worked out fine. That evening I put a check in the mail for 1/2 of the deposit and sent it out on July 9th.Well, I and my traveling friend put in for our days off from work and on this past Wednesday evenning, 7/18 there is a message from "Diane" probably one of the rudest persons I have ever spoken with. She leaves me a message (while chewing on something) stating that my check was not received until that day, the 18th and my reservation was cancelled & my check was put back in the mail. You can imagine my HORROR, we had planned for this week-end and were so looking forward to it so I immediately called and spoke with a man who was just as rude and not the least bit accomodating. I was told he could do nothing...I would have to call back in the morning, which I did and finally got to speak with "Diane". Again I was told my check was not received in time so it was being returned. Now I have already made plans, and she still insisted that there was nothing that she could do. I asked her why she didn't give me a call to tell me that the check was never received, after all, they did have a phone #, but that's not part of their policy... so I told her why don't you switch the person around that you gave my reservation to and she said that she had their check already. I again explained to her that perhaps my check was sitting in their PO Box, because I did send it out that next day. Personally, I feel that they gave my room out for a better rate because, than she said that she would give me a room downstairs for two nights and than move me upstairs for one night; however the rate was higher, which made no sense since originally I was staying upstairs for 3 nights in a larger room with the balcony and 2 double beds.At that point I told her I would mail back the check when I received it. That was not good, I was told that she would take a credit card....which is what I wanted to do at the VERY BEGINNING OF THIS FIASCO!!! So I gave her my card # to confirm the reservation( now this was Thursday morning 7/19). I was told that I had until Saturday, 7/21 to cancel or my card would be charged $300. Well, I made the reservation and immediately called other places, much nicer places and spoke with people that were not rude and extremely accomodating. Well, myself and my traveling partner will be going to Montauk this coming week-end but you can be ABSOLUTELY SURE we ARE NOT STAYING AT THE SANDS MOTEL. If anyone has any intentions of staying at the SANDS prepare yourself to speak with people that need lessons in dealing with the public. I have been going to Montauk for over 30 years now, and have never dealt with such RUDE, BUSINESS PEOPLE WHO's LIVELY-HOODS DEPEND ON THE TOURIST!!!!!!!!!!! and yes, they really do need to clean up there parking area!!! Oh, and BTW, I received my check back today, and it was postmarked 7/9/07 which I'm sure it was received in plenty of time.

This is in response to the person whose reservation was cancelled due to non receipt of deposit in a timely fashion.

All persons are advised when making their reservation that we allow five days from the day they make their reservation to receive a deposit. In actuality we allow six to seven days in case there is a problem with the mail. The person in this letter had made a reservation with us by phone for a one night stay in June. A deposit was never received. On the day that she was supposed to be staying with us for that day in June, she came into our office and made another reservation in person for a weekend in July. While taking her information (name, address etc.) it all sounded very familiar and I asked her if she had already made a reservation with us and she said no she had not. (After she left our office, I looked through our phone records to see that she HAD made a reservation for THAT day but had never sent a deposit). Subsequently, she made this next reservation which we held again for seven days and NEVER received a deposit. She then called again to make ANOTHER reservation for July 26; we held the reservations for six days and NEVER received the deposit! Her reservation was naturally cancelled especially due to her history of making reservations and not sending deposits.

Her request for us to cancel someone else out - who had sent their deposit - seemed unreasonable. We regret that we were not able to accommodate her after receiving her late deposit but we no longer had any vacancies for the dates she had requested.

We stayed at the Sands for Memorial Day weekend 2007 and booked a suite for 2 nights, which was really a condo in the building next door. The place is literally 20 feet from the beach, and from our 3rd floor private balcony, we could see the ocean.

The suite was large, with a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and separate living area. We were very pleased with size. The furniture was very outdated, but it was clean and pleasant, except a little mold in the ceiling.

I would recommend the Sands, for location, and value. It does seem to get much more expensive later in the season though.

My family has just returned from our 5th stay at the Sands Motel, and we remain convinced that it is by far the best option for us in Montauk. We have two school-aged boys and thus prefer to rent a deluxe suite, which allows my husband and I to have some space away from the kids. The suites on the 2nd floor have a lovely view of the ocean (not the beach, as it is across the street). For families that want to save money on meals, there's a grocery store located right next door. The kitchens in the suites have sufficient facilities to cook, and there are two grills on the premises--one located next to the pool, which was much improved this year. There's mini-golf across the street and an arcade, in addition to easy access to town (including great pizza, breakfast diners, liquor store, spa, etc.). I have been surprised to read all the comments on this site about "mean management" at the Sands; this has not been my experience at all. As regulars, we are treated quite well. All in all, the Sands is a great place for families, especially those without access to a car.

We stayed at The Sands Hotel the first week of August. While we liked the room and the balcony setting, the outside of the hotel is run down. They should pave their parking area leading to the suites. It would look more accomodating. The room was clean and the pool was well maintained. The staff was accomodating in helping us make reservations. Is it worth $300 a night? Not really. I would say The Sands is a $100 to $150 a night hotel. I would reconsider them again if the prices were more in line with what they offer.
