“overpriced & smelly”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2012

Family stayed here this summer, in a way overpriced room, even by Montauk standards. There is a new management company this season that lacks the friendly, knowledgeable, and personal charm of years past which, at the time, compensated for the dated decor, ancient mattresses, tepid showers, and thin walls. The man who took our reservation had no idea about the property, but he did have the wonderful Hampton attitude of me doing him the favor by staying at the Soundview. Lest he remember this is a fishing town, not the Hamptons. Oh, and if you have mold or mildew allergies, RUN away from this place.

In reference to the above mentioned post, Dune management is the new management co this year..As you stated in your post we are facing many challenges this year and have made every effort to do as many upgrades since taking over the property which opened in April. I do apologize for the gentleman that took your reservation who was not familiar with the property and also for your unpleasant stay. With that being said I would like to hear from you to personally handle what I hope will be a future return to the Montauk Soundview ,so that you will be able to see in 2013 the vast improvements that not only the Montauk Soundview Owners, Dune Managament and myself as Property Manager are looking forward to.

Respectfully Yours,

Stayed here last October during the last weekend before the hotel closed for the season. I was in one of the regular rooms, (no extra bedrooms/not a suite), and took what they had available since it was the weekend of the annual Montauk chowder fest & the town was jammed. The room was very clean & was what you would call original, old style Montauk... it wasn't fancy in any way & hadn't yet been upgraded like some of the other larger suites on the property- and you know what? It didn't matter.... I didn't care - the room was fine, clean & the bed was VERY comfortable. You're in Montauk -and you're not there to hang out in the room. The bathroom had been updated and was spotless and yes, the room could have been better but SO what - clean and comfy, great rates plus you step outside and head out to their deck and have million dollar views right in front of you. The sunsets at this property just totally blow you away. The setup is great in that they have tables out front, right by the water and grills are available to use. A pool is there too if you feel the urge and it was spotless. Since we were there to spend the weekend with family who were staying in another hotel just down the road, we made everyone stop preparing dinner and schlepped everyone over to THIS hotel so that we could sit out front by the water, have cocktails and watch the sun go down. The view and colors were spectacular and made it so worth it to be there. Great family photos were taken that we will have and the kids had a blast playing in the sand. Plus you're right near Gosman's and the marina's & docks which are nice to explore... not to mention nearby getty's where you can throw a line out with the kids. The owners are great, too. This is great for a casual family weekend and/or a quick getaway - its the location, convenience and views that give this hotel a very good rating... I would go back to this little hidden charm any day.

Say if you are travelling with your family, you have your kids, and maybe your parents with you and you are planning to spend a week in Montauk : this place is perfect for you. If you are a couple who is not planning to renting a car and wants to spend a weekend in montauk - not so much. We were in the latter category.

Good things
- The water view : It's right on a very calm patch of the sound. You can see the sunset colors on the water from your balcony. Perfect.
- Good value and the staff when they are around are friendly.
- Good clean rooms.
- A full kitchen.
- Closeby to grossman's dock and the restaurants there.

Not so great things
- The beach by the hotel is a very small piece of rocky land full of floatsam by the sound. The "real" beaches are a few miles away. The best beach we saw was the ditch beach.
- There is no staff on the property at nights. Usually this wouldn't matter but we lost power in the middle of the night during a heat wave. I called the emergency number (the manager's cell phone) three or four times and finally got an answer from one of them forty minutes later. Of course once I talked to him he was at the hotel within 10 minutes and fixed the circuit breaker.
- No shampoos in the bathroom
- They don't give you beach towels (this is the first ocean side hotel which I have stayed in that doesn;t)
- About three to four miles drive from the town. So you better have a car as the cabs take their sweet time to show up,

All in all, it's a pretty good value for money if you are going to cook for your self and spend a week or so and plan to drive around. It's NOT a resort. We may be back though, if we plan to stay longer but for a weekend we will look for something close to the town,

Room Tip: Get the ocean view room, I think it's called the captain's cabin or something

Husband and I stayed here during the first week of june. The room had a comfortable bed, kitchen and balcony with amazing ocean view (see picture). The bathroom was white and sparkling clean which always makes me feel at ease. There were other couples and families on the property. The pool looked nice, we didn't get a chance to use it. 1 minute walk to the beach - don't forget to bring beach towels/chairs like we did as there is no place that rents them, you could buy them from town. Few minutes drive to town. Great value for the location. The owner and son were very friendly and accomodating. We would definitely stay here again.

We vacation in Montauk twice a year and have usually stayed on the southside (East Deck) or in town. We were looking for something different for the 4 day weekend over the Jewish holidays. We found it at the Soundview. Customer Service is excellent from the first call until checkout. Our room was exceptionally clean and updated (Full working kitchen). The heated outdoor pool was a huge plus for our child long after the other hotels had closed their pools. Walk to Gosman's dock for meal and ice cream. Small private beach for hanging out and looking for shells. Rates are slightly lower than more well known places in town and the rooms here are in nice condition. If you are looking for a nice getaway with or without children, this is the place. BBQs on property as well as great deckspace near pool and plenty of lounge chairs. Great complimentary WI-FI as well in case you must connect to the outside world.

I have stayed here for 4 yrs now. It is the best place for families w young kids. The ground are very secure so my son can run free without me worrying about him. It is very family oriented, so you have a million built in babysitters! The pool is great and has spectacular views. Sunsets are amazing! The staff is very accommodating and any issues that arise are dealt with promptly. I look forward to going every year and seeing the same families year in and year out. The house keeper, Marisol, is every woman's dream come true......she makes it a vacation for me too! I plan to go back year after year, even when my son goes to college!
