Gurneys was a great experience! Upon arriving we weren't sure if we loved it or hated it. Its that kind of place. But once you settle in you realize this is an old hotel which has maintained it's quaint, small hotel feeling. If you are looking for a modern upscale hotel, you have come to the wrong place. The rooms have been updated but the
common area has been kept quaint and old fashioned, a lot of the fixtures and original decor are now antiques?? Makes for interesting looking around the place and seeing the old stuff. Not too many areas
are off limits. The place is basically yours to explore.
There is dark wood throughout and an old fashioned coffee shop just off the front desk which i first thought was the weirdest thing but If you've ever watched "dirty dancing" with Patrick Swazy and
"nobody puts baby in a corner". The county club at which they danced?
I felt like i was there. It reminded me of a 1950's style country club. VERY QUAINT!
There is a big beautiful bar in the formal dining area with a stage just above. The hotel provides nightly entertainment in that area. There was karoke one night. I heard they had comedy in the summer. There is also an outside bar on one of the patios that opens weather permitting.
Beware! there are no elevators and you must walk up (or down if you're lucky enough to have a room on the ocean) several flights of narrow staircases to get to your room. Most of the stairs are outside. Our room which was actually a small suite had a king bed, nice size marble bathroom, wet bar with small under sink fridge, and a closet with plenty of room for hanging clothes, (lots of drawers in
all the tables and bureau around the room) a safe in the closet, blow
dryer, iron and board. It had a separate sitting area, windows that open, and a door that leads to a small patio with two lounge chairs and a smashing ocean view!!! The Atlantic is right there providing great waves crashing day and night! That being said the rooms seem alittle tired and maybe a bit rundown. But we weren't turned off or grossed out. I understand it is hard keeping things golden at the shore, the salt water affects things. The bathtub was real small.
You walk out your door, down the stairs and you are on one of the best beaches in the country. They have great beach service with chairs umbrellas and towels at no additional cost. there's a little shack with beach food and drinks. (someone said there is waitress service in the warmer months)
We attended a conference and the wait staff was wonderful. Constantly
filling your water or wine, whatever your poison. AND they had their act together, everyone knows their job and does it.
i've been to a few older hotels that have been in business for years and the food, staff and the place in general gets tired. THE FOOD HERE WAS EXCELLENT! I was expecting ok food but it was awesome. I read a review and they said the eggs were great. Well i'm here to tell you that not only were the eggs great, ALL the food was great. I didn't have a bad meal, not once.
When you go to a place like Gurneys you have to be ready to experience "old fashioned service with a smile" Again if you're looking for marble and chandliers, look elsewhere. This is a family oriented, seaside, lazy days of summer kind of place. I think the wait staff lives on premises because we saw an area that said "staff quarters". These guys and gals seem to be from different parts of the world (like a cruise ship) but they care about Gurneys and making
sure you have a nice time.
Getting back to the coffee/sandwich shop...they have a Bakery that delivers all over the Hamptons. The cakes and muffins were good and very affordable. All the food was affordable. The bakeshop is down right cheap with big cookies for $1. and $1.36 for an oversized muffin??? where do you find that these days? We always got Starbucks
coffee before 10pm to take back to our room and sit on the patio at night. $4.15 for two. You could always call for room service but we didn't.
They don't have an outdoor pool, but the indoor pool looked fine and it is glass enclosed with views of the ocean. There is a small sundeck and the gym looked state of the art. The spa was nice and modern. I had an ocean radiance facial with Oriana, she was great and
i had no complaints about the spa. Be advised an 18% gratituty is automatically added to your bill. You are informed of these things when you check into the hotel....you must read the paperwork you are given or you won't know what's going on!
Free Wireless internet was available throughout the resort, BUT there
was No cell phone service in many areas. You have to go to a special place on the property to get a signal. I didn't care, it was great being away from it all for a few days.
Once you drive around Montauk just a bit, you realize this is an old town which has been kept that way on purpose. There's no mcdonald's, dunkin donuts or burger king and i think they want to keep it that way. Gurneys fits right in. I liked It!
