“What a disappointment!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

Decor at Jewel is impressive. Everything else is inadequate. We had a reservation but there was no table for us and we had to wait. The food was very disappointing and very pricey considering the quality of it. The calamari salad was a potato salad with rare morsels of calamari. The sea bass although well prepared and fresh was absolutely raw. Desserts were served with much flourish but were very poor. The Tarte Tatin consisted of a few slivers of soggy over boiled apple sitting on a spongy mush. A diner would be embarrassed to serve such a tarte Tatin! When I complained to the waiter, he simply looked at me and burst laughing... So much for sophisticated service! No alternate dessert was offered, and we were charged $9 for this. I don't mind a stiff bill after a good meal, but I resent being ripped off and we were very much so that night!

“Not worth the expense”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

Maybe I should have asked for the sommelier, because our waitress' wine recommendations were 2 duds for me BUT 1 great glass for my spouse -- i.e., the 2007 Waters Crest Cab Franc is a fine, fine red. The octopus appetizer's ingredients didn't meld, but I DID enjoy my unique gumbo. The gnocchi were flabby and its sauce un-fine, and my "day's special" white bean & soprosatta ravioli were only pretty good. Overall, this place was NOT worth its $122 tab, for two. (And, its interior decor is SO schizophrenic it's funny -- which helps pass the time while you wait for service. NOT the busboys & water-bearers, ALWAYS prompt, but, rather, your prime server.) Btw, every guy should visit its Mens toilet, for a laugh.

“Some highs and lows”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

Visually impressive restaurant unlike any I have seen on Long Island. I have been there 4 times and sometimes the food is great, other times just good. It is a bit pricey but not over the top. The service is always first rate. Most bizarre wine list I have ever seen; something like 6 pages devoted to Long Island wine. There is even a section on "Long Island Cult Wines" I kid you not. That is just silly. After wading through all those Long Island wines, they all pop up AGAIN later in the wine list under variousl grape varietals. A thoughtful wine list with quality and value need not carry more than a small handful of LI wines.

“Tom Schaudel's Jewel Restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2013

Tom Schaudel has created and run some of long island's most interesting and diverse restaurants.
Aside from his culinary brilliance, Tom is a writer, larger than life personality and has his own unique style and showmanship. Jewel is the latest Schaudel creation and by far the most glitzy and glamorous. The glittering tinted windows and gentle flowing water as you enter are all part of the enormous stage that is Jewel. The multiple sights at Jewel are like a wondrous 3 ring circus.
There is a spectacular circular bar, an open air kitchen where Tom is often on display working his magic. Spectacular lighting, beautiful floral arrangements, open viewing wine displays, and a comical mens room room where everyone can have their 15 seconds of fame...All of these are terrific and exciting. Of course the main attraction at Jewel is the fabulous food and Tom's unique seafood creations and presentation. Jewel is spectacular, romantic and a fabulous place for a romantic evening out or a special occasion. They also do a booming business lunchtime business. Simply the best!

“Apt name for a very fine restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2013

The service was wonderful and the food was better. The booths are spacious and offer great privacy. The appetizers are all great. An idea for those who choose to eat less is to have two appetizers and that leaves room for dessert. The wine list is extensive and offers good value.
We will return !
