“Good price, but old”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2011

Very much a budget hotel. Not within walking distance of anything really, mostly an industrial area. Kinda far ride on the subway into the city. If price is the most important concern, then this hotel is adequate. No trendy furnishings, old school style hotel furniture.

A fairly quiet backwater part of town, and a slightly rundown but pretty clean hotel. Staff was friendly enough (for New Yorkers), and really no complaints at all. It's only about a 20 minute walk to the subway, although they seem to offer a shuttle service (never saw one, though).

For the price, this is certainly a decent place to stay if visiting NYC.

Nothing fantastic but honest. The breakfast is below average; the gym too. Rooms are ok, nice to have shuttle to subway but this one is about 10 mntes walking.

Room Tip: Some room have nice view on Manathan

Horrible hotel over priced not in good location rooms too small. The staffs where not friendly and not willing to guide and help the clients. The worst part was the breakfast, it was in a small room where everyone have to cramp in. They give us disposable plate and cup with which we really don't feel like eating. And the same menu repeat everyday.

Very nice staff. Rooms are clean, beds are comfy. What more do you need in new York, you only sleep in your room, and tour new York by day. The shuttle only runs free from 8 a.m. To 10 p.m. Otherwise they charge you 10 for the ride. Yellow taxi is only 4.60 to 40th and lowry station. We did walk at night back to hotel from the station with no problem. Pete grill is a good place to eat and good delis and Irish pub right next to hotel. You can also take the bus on greens point to the train station for free is you buy the 7 day unlimited metro pass for 29.00 all train and bus info is online at mta.info. Go to trip planner get around the city easy and cheap. Much faster then tour buses and taxi due to high traffic. We were there 3 days and gave purr passes to the maid so she could use the 4 unsaid day of the passes. Also newyorkpass.com check it out in three days we save $410.00 at all the atractions. Had a great trip with my girlfriends. We will be back next year!

If you're looking for a fabulous hotel in tip top shape close to the city...click next! If you're looking for a decent place to stay, about 45 minutes from the city, nice breakfast, and clean room...read on!

The hotel could use some upgrading(AC unit made noise) but, are you in NYC to sit in your room and go aaahhhhh such a pretty room - OR - to be out and about in the city itself?!

Upside: Staff is kind, bathroom and beds are clean, breakfast is standard but decent, the shuttle to 40/Lowery station is the hotels draw for me.
Downside: the neighborhood around the side and back of the hotel is a very sketchy. Wouldn't feel very safe outside of the perimeter of the hotel.

*There is currently construction work on the #7 train track which is the station the shuttle from the hotel drops off at. So, to get to the city you have to get on at Lowery and then go up either 3 or 4 stops, and then take another train back downtown. This tacks on an additional 25 minutes to the travel time. So give yourself an hour to get to Manhattan if they are still working on the tracks. Why doesn't the shuttle drop off at a working station while the work on the #7 train track is in progress?

This was my second time staying at the City View. If you get a room for a good price, it is well worth the stay. If I get another good price, I will stay again. Anything over $130, I would look elsewhere.

A couple things that I did not like about the hotel. #1 the staff doesnt speak good english. it makes it very frustrating and hard to communicate with them. when i originally arrived at the subway station to be picked up I had a very hard time speaking with the representative to find out when, where, what the shuttle would pick me up. eventually he just got confused and hung up on me. #2 dont leave any valuables in the hotel. i had money stolen out of my room two nights in a row. After the first time we left a small amount of change on the table to see if it would be taken, and it was stolen again. after that we did not feel comfortable leaving anything of significant value in the room. #3 like most people visiting NYC you stay out late doing whatever it is you may be doing. its a major pain that the shuttle service stops at 10 considering it takes about an hour to get to the hotel from most places in manhattan. Its probably a 15-20 minute walk from the subway and in the rain its terrible. i didnt feel very safe walking back at midnight in LIC. not to mention they are doing all this work on the subway stations nearby so to get to Manhattan you must travel backwards for several stations before you can switch lines for manhattan bound 7 trains. Like I said before, it takes atleast an hour to get to the city if youre lucky and the train doesnt stop on the tracks due to the construction going on in the area(it stopped every time we were on the train). lastly, the shuttle service is not good. typically you have to wait for a while for it to get there even if you call ahead. I waited for around 30 minutes once and then the driver called me a liar and said I did not wait more than 5 minutes. Oh really? i guess i forgot how to tell time. Oh yeah the elevator sucks too. It was very slow and you would wait for 5-10 minutes while it seemed to just sit on other floors. The breakfast was ok, but there was so many people you could never get a seat. I mean its a good price for nyc and the room itself is fine. I slept good and didnt have any issues with my room, but I would not go back for sure. I have stayed at other hotels in the city in a comparable price range that are much better.
