“Unique Hotel & Experience, Probably Not for Everyone”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2014

We were looking for a decent hotel for the right price, preferably near a subway station. We found the Paper Factory Hotel online and we thought it looked interesting, so we made a reservation. Overall, we had a good experience. We were aware from other reviews that there might be issues with noise, amenities, services, etc, but we didn't have as bad as an experience as others had. We would consider staying here again.

Pros:
- New hotel, clean, good atmosphere
- Nice room, large windows made it feel more spacious
- Subway station across the street
- Free street parking
- Free wifi (a little spotty though)
- Friendly staff
- Close to Astoria
- Cafe in lobby, another close coffee place within walking distance

Cons
- It is noisy (see below for details)
- Can't control room temperature
- HDMI ports on the TV didn't work
- Housekeeping was a little off

The hotel is really nice, has an industrial modern feel. Our room was at the end of the hall on the 5th floor (room 527) and had large windows. It felt less like a hotel and more like staying in our own space, which we liked. The bathroom/vanity area is separate from the shower. Our room had a queen sized bed, a large full length mirror, tv (no cable), dresser, chair, clothes rack with hangers, phone, iron and ironing board, hair dryer, side table and lamp, clock radio, a reading light and usb outlets in the wall.

The windows all had blinds, which was good because the room got a little warm during the day. We could open them slightly which helped let cool air in. The room had a thermostat, but we couldn't control it and the hotel still had the heat on for the winter, even though the highs were in the 50F-60Fs. If we had spent more time in our room during the day, this would have been more of an issue for us.

There is a subway station right across the street from the hotel which was convenient. There is free street parking, but it gets crowded right in front of the hotel during the day due to the Mercedes dealership across the street. There is parking around the other sides of the hotel too, and nearby streets. They play music in the lobby and have a cafe that sells coffee and pastries/bagels if you don't want to venture out. They are working on a restaurant and bar at the front of the hotel. The staff was very friendly, and the hotel manager, Rinat, took good care of us when we checked out, asked if we needed direction or a cab, and was happy to accept any feedback that we had.

We read reviews before visiting about the hotel being very noisy, and the walls being very thin. I was concerned, because I am a light sleeper. I tried sleeping without earplugs the first night, and only made it through early morning without them. There are warehouses around the hotel and a truck was loading/unloading at 1am on Saturday and it was very loud. That same night a party in a nearby room woke me. Once I used the earplugs I could sleep, and I didn't have issues the other nights we stayed. My husband slept through all of this without earplugs, so it just depends on how light of a sleeper you are, I think.

Based off other reviews, I thought the noise from adjacent rooms would be very loud - I could hear people, but their voices didn't carry as much as I was expecting. That being said, we could hear them plugging things into the wall we shared, moving furniture around, and things like that were way louder than their voices carrying. Noise in the hall was louder than noise in adjacent rooms.

The hotel has been open for a few months now, and they seem to be taking a lot of their guests feedback seriously, and trying to make the hotel a great place to stay.

Oddly, my first impression was based off of it's smell...it was lovely and welcoming. I've stayed at a lot of hotels in and around Manhattan. Recently, I've started staying in Queens/Long Island city when I come because it's so close to Manhattan –about 5 subway stops – and it's way easier to find parking for your car when driving in. This place is a true hidden gem! The staff was very friendly and genuine, especially the manager Sophia. She went out of her way to make us feel at home. The rooms were tastefully done with original hardwood floors, cozy bed linens, and drool-worthy rustic furniture. You get a taste of what it would be like to live in a loft in NYC, even if for only a day. They kept as much original detail as possible, even repurposing old elevator doors as wall coverings. Between two of the original columns they have built in a cute little coffee bar that serves pastries. They told us of their plans to add on a breakfast area and Tapas bar. The subway entrance was about 30 feet from the front door –could not be closer. There was a ton of 2-hr parking on all the surrounding blocks. And also an inexpensive garage 2 blocks away for overnight/24-hr parking. I CANNOT WAIT to stay hare again! We did not want to leave and were planning our trip back during the ride home. Also, loved the biscoff biscuits they left in the rooms.

It was a bit hard to find–it's only been open a few weeks and did not have any signage up yet. But that was the only hiccup during our stay.

We had a great time but didn't sleep on either of two nights. The place is interesting and it was at least value priced. If not traveling by car the lack of good parking won't be a worry but think twice if you are. The free on-street parking is very competitive and confusing. If you find a spot nearby you'll be very lucky. You'll need to frequently move your car for the posted street sweeping (not that we actually saw a street sweeper. No doubt we would have received a ticket or a towing had we not obeyed). A local Mercedes dealership parks an absurd number of cars all around the place. They are fierce competitors and they won't like you. They pinned us in so bad with two of their cars it required about hundred motions to get out. The surrounding area is industrial and unattractive (it's about the most unusual location for a Mercedes dealership that you could imagine) but there's a subway stop just steps from the door and it's only minutes into Manhattan. The rooms are incredibly noisy from every direction and sparsely furnished. No desks. Beds were okay (doubles are so small and whoever chose them over queens in designing this place is simply an idiot). The pillows were worthless. You'd need to compress four into a single case to make anything effective. The free wireless was horrible. You could check your email and perhaps browse for some information if willing to endure the frequent drops in connectivity but forget remoting into your office. The signal strength seemed to be there but the capacity and reliability just wasn't. As others have mentioned there's no ice available unless you call the front desk. The lounges on each floor could be greatly enhanced by simply providing ice machines and perhaps a vending machine or two. There's certainly room for them. We'd have gladly traded the opportunity to play ping pong for the availability of a cold drink and some ice. There was not a single vending machine in the hotel that we could find. On the upside the rooms were very clean and the bathroom and shower were terrific. The coffee bar was great and when the main restaurant & bar opens it will be a big plus. A few Long Island Ice Teas right before bed might help overcome the noise that will otherwise prevent light sleepers from sleeping. For a family willing to endure less than ideal conditions this was still a fun place to stay for our adventure in New York.

Room Tip: Get an end room and perhaps reduce noise by half.

I have stayed there for 4 night with friends.
From the minute we walked in the team welcomed us with worm greetings and treated us like we were the only guests staying.
The rooms are amazingly beautiful, the hotel is brand new and beautifuly
designed.
With the subway just outside the hotel you can get to anywhere you want easily. Close to manhatten.
Best value for money in new york city.

It's like your neighbors are in your room. Every word of every sentence...completely discernible. We even changed rooms with the same results.

Please don't let these people next door have sex!

Rooms are large and well-appointed. Floors are concrete and my feet/socks stayed dirty.

Nice modern Hotel just opened 4 month ago. Super clean, nice room, modern good furniture and so on. Pictures are 100% real for all rooms. No Bar or Restaurant open yet but it will get a cool place. Much better then the ratholes you get in manhattan for this price. Metro just accross the street, safe area, no problem to walk around even in the dark, 5th Ave Manhattan in 8 min. Dont't worry about any noise. We had a room direction main road an sleept well. Personal is super friendly. All over verry good.

My wife and I stayed here recently for one night. We wanted a place relatively close to where our son lives in Astoria and this was a good location for us. We read the reviews in Trip Advisor first, of course, and it just sounded like a cool place- and it was. We were greeted warmly at the front desk although our room key didn’t work and I had to go back to the front desk and have it re-set or whatever. The hotel is a converted factory and has, for example, concrete floors with some rugs in certain places. There was a lobby on the 2nd floor although kind of a work in progress but the relaxation area on the 1st floor off the main lobby that was very nice. There is a coffee bar there [we had coffee and croissants for breakfast] and they’re working on a restaurant.
The room was neat- with antique or antique-looking furniture but with a modern bathroom and nice TV. Our room was on the 2nd floor and the view was, well, interesting [see my pictures]. The bed and bedding was very comfortable and we slept very well that night. I noticed that some other reviewers mentioned it was noisy and I could understand that given the concrete floors but it was quiet during our stay [on a Wednesday night]. The room did not have a closet but had hooks instead to hang your clothes.
The Paper Factory Hotel is only a few blocks away from The Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria which we toured the next day. The location was fine for us- especially during the day- but might be a little unsettling at night- take a taxi.
This hotel might not be for everyone but we really enjoyed our stay here and the price was reasonable at $159.00 plus taxes. I recommend you try it- and hope you found this review helpful.
