I booked this hotel because we drove to NYC and wanted to be able to park at our hotel. The hotel was a good deal compared to Manhattan hotels or even New Jersey hotels ($160/night though I had to pay up front and the reservation was non-cancellable and non-refundable). Our room was a good size, clean, comfortable and well designed (big closet, fridge, iron, hair-dryer, good sized dresser, etc.). Our room at the end of the hall was quiet and traffic noise was minimal. I would classify this as a "no-frills" type of hotel, but staff is friendly, the whole place is fresh and new and they offer little conveniences we appreciated like a microwave and computer with printer in the lower lobby.
The only negative about this hotel is the location. The subway is a good 10-12 minute walk away (10 for the E or M train and 12 for the 7 train) and there isn't much in the way of shopping or restaurants close by. The neighbourhood seems safe, but is pretty deserted after midnight. The area right around the hotel is still industrial/commercial and there's no place to buy food or incidentals, especially late at night. If you're willing to walk 10 - 15 minutes, there's a Duane Reade (drugstore) on 47th and 5th with a good-sized grocery section, and the Court Square Diner at 23rd and Jackson is good, reasonably priced and open 24 hours (they also do take-out). We also had dinner one night at John Brown BBQ which is only 2 blocks away. It was very good, but when we got there at about 8:00 they were already out of quite a few items.
Once you're on the subway, it's only 10 minutes to Manhattan. We got unlimited Metro cards and generally when into to city in the morning, came back to the hotel in the late afternoon, and then when back to the city at night. We didn't mind the walk in the morning, but coming back late at night it was sometimes a bit much (and you can't count on getting a cab as there aren't many around). I was never worried about my safety, but I wouldn't want my mother or daughter doing that walk alone after dark. The area to the west of Vernon Blvd. starting at 46th street is lovely, with a water-front park, running trails, lounge chairs and a great view of Manhattan. I was there at 7:00 one morning and there were already lots of runners and dog walkers out.
I would say that this hotel is best for couples or families with older kids. If you're energetic and don't mind walking, you'll likely be very satisfied, but if you'll be toting toddlers or want to go back and forth to the hotel several times a day, it might be a bit remote.
