“Loved it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2012

Stayed in New York at the end of October. First, we worried about being so far outside the city, but it wasen't a problem at all. The hotel had a car, and drove guests two and from The city center all day. The ride took about 10 minutes, and ended close to Bloomingdales. Also, taxi is not axpensive at all, and we payed about 10 dollar from the hotel to the city.

Staff was friendly and helpful.

We we're lucky and got a room on the top floor (11th). The view of the Manhattan skyline was perfect, and you would totally miss that if you decide to stay in the city center.

Sad thing is that there's not many things close to the hotel. A restaurant around the corner, but not anything else interesting..

Room Tip: Best view from floor 5 and up.

A local radio host, known to recommend great places at low prices, suggested looking in Long Island City, instead of New York City to find a reasonably priced hotel room. I booked this new hotel hoping that I wasn't making a mistake. It was a great find! The staff continually met our needs and answered all of our questions. We were a bit concerned about the cost of getting over to the city. No problem! They have a limo which leaves on the hour to go into the city and one on the 1/2 hr. on the way back to the hotel. Too many people waiting for the limo; no problem, they call other cars or taxis to pick you up. This is a free service that they provide.
Downstairs is a cocktail lounge and small deli opened 24/7. The rooms are small, but very modern. One wall is completely glass so you see the Queensboro Bridge and New York City.
It snowed one night and the room continued to be toasty warm. The entire rooftop is a bar/lounging area, which has spectacular views. Would recommend this hotel to everyone.

Room Tip: All rooms face New York. Ask for a higher floor.

As New Yorkers, my boyfriend and I like to vacation a couple times a year right here at home. It's such a great city, but as residents we don't get to appreciate much of what it has to offer because we get so busy with day-to-day life. This is how we discovered the Z hotel last summer, shortly after it opened. I didn't think it was fair to review it back then, because they were still very much "figuring it all out" at that point. Although we had a great time, and thought the hotel was beautiful, most of the amenities were a work in progress.

When we saw that Groupon was offering a deal on the Z Hotel, we jumped at the chance to return. We just enjoyed a 2 night stay, and at this point I can wholeheartedly recommend this great hotel without any reservations or caveats.

First of all, the location cannot be beat. Don't be put off by the fact that the hotel is not in Manhattan. There is hourly limousine service to 59th ST in Manhattan which puts you right next to the subway (and Bloomingdales) or a quick cab ride to just about anywhere. The ride from the hotel to 59th ST is faster than it is from our Manhattan apartment to the same location. In other words, rest assured that you will be closer to midtown than you would be at many (much pricier) Manhattan hotels. And they're probably not going to take you anywhere in a limousine.

Secondly, the view from the room is a breathtaking, post-card perfect view that no Manhattan hotel can match. Stay on the upper floors of this hotel if you can, and for the best view, upgrade to a King sized room (the bed is positioned so that you can get the full panoramic view of the skyline while laying down). When the sun goes down, do yourself this favor: turn off all of the lights in your room except the Mason Jar lights and open the curtains wide. It is magic. (Even for a New Yorker with a great skyline view from her apartment window.)

Third, I am not certain what some of the reviewers expect service-wise, but we found the service to be just great. The staff is young and friendly. When we called from our room with small requests, we found them responsive and efficient. The front desk staff in particular was skilled, welcoming and accommodating. Kadeem and Maria worked the desk all three days of our stay, and helped us with a few issues in ways that were not part of their job description. Maria in particular was an adept problem solver who went above and beyond, all without making you feel like you were putting her out.

For those not used to NYC hotels, yes the rooms are small (this applies everywhere in NY). But here, they are modern, pretty, clean, and comfortable. Also I've read a few reviews about the dodgy neighborhood, but we love this part of the city. It's a true up-and-coming area, with many great restaurants (message me for recommendations), shops, and the fantastic Gantry State Park. The hotel is located amid factories and warehouses, and that juxtaposition of the local gritty roughness with the sparkling glamor of this legendary city is the quintessential poetry of the New York I love.

We will definitely stay here again. And again. You should too!

Room Tip: Upper floor rooms are quiet and have the best views!!!!

My husband and I stayed at Z Hotel for our honeymoon over Christmas and New Year. The location of the hotel isn't the best, as it is situated in an industrial area just over the Queensboro Bridge. But a shuttle car leaves hourly to take guests into maintown Manhattan, there is also an hourly pickup to bring people back. So location wasn't a problem. There is also a subway stop about a 10 minute walk away from the hotel.

Our room was fine, a little on the small side but with trendy decor, nice rainforest shower and very comfortable bed. Really clean. We experienced some early morning noise from building work being carried out in the neighbourhood, but none from within the hotel itself. Good quality toiletries were provided, but we did have to prompt staff to replenish.

The Staff were very young (probably poorly paid) and inexperienced. Customer service was poor and common sense seemed to be lacking. Reception staff were generally polite. We found one of the female bar staff to be quite rude and abrupt.

We had one evening meal in the hotel restaurant due to getting back late. It was really a snack bar. food was cheap and edible. Drinks were expensive. Breakfast itself was fine, but it was buffet style and we found it ran out long before service time ended.

An incident occurred on our 6th day, where our room door was found to be open on our arrival back at the hotel, and I believe a leather jacket to have been taken. Staff were unhelpful over this matter.

I wouldn't really recommend spending much time around the hotel, but as a place to shower and sleep it was fine. A good base to explore New York from. And we had a great time.

We planned a trip back to NYC to visit friends and managed to get a reasonable Groupon for this place. We'd stayed at mid-range hotels in LIC before and expected the experience to be just average. However, the style and attention to detail at this hotel was definitely a pleasant surprise - a big step above other Queens hotels and many hotels we've experienced in Manhattan. Very comfortable place and very accessible to Manhattan. Just 10-15 min walk to the N and then one stop to the Upper East Side (or, if there is bad weather, there's apparently a direct shuttle service to Manhattan). Nice touches and the staff were very eager to please. The view from the room was great.

My wife and I stayed here one night for our anniversary on our way to upstate NY. We didn't expect to stay in such a great hotel! The views of the Manhattan skyline at night were amazing. Every room faces Manhattan. The hotel has a very modern feel and I don't believe I heard another guest speaking English our whole visit (very refreshing!). The rooms aren't tiny unless you are used to large, chain hotels. Our room was half the price of other hotels just across the water in Manhattan. Free shuttle to 59th & Lexington so not a bad walk to see everything. Easily accessed by subway, if you are used to subway systems (Penn Station to West 4th St via E train, West 4th to 21st/Queensbridge via F train). Fridge comes stocked with beer/wine etc. you can purchase. Floor-to-ceiling windows facing Manhattan. A great find in NYC

Booked a king room for one night. Interestingly, both king and queen rooms were the same price, and if this is true at the time of your booking I would highly recommend a king as the bed is placed facing the floor-to-ceiling windows, so you can lie in bed and look out directly at the NYC skyline. We asked for a high floor and got a room on the 11th, which is the highest. The rooftop bar wasn't open that night (maybe due to the freezing temperatures) so the noise, which many other reviewers have pointed out, was not an issue at all. Also, we were high up enough to be able to sleep with the curtains pulled and the view was absolutely breathtaking. From the room you can see both sunset and sunrise! I assume this is true of all rooms, but we were in #1101.
As for the room, it was small as others have pointed out, the heating was on and off, too hot when on and too cold when off. Staff was helpful in trying to fix this issue, which another couple on the same floor had as well. The bed was ok.
The tub was great and water pressure and temperature were good. Having a sink in the room as opposed to the bathroom didn't bother me, but the fluorescent lights around the mirror sure did. It felt like being at the sink of a public restroom. It wouldn't even be worth pointing out if it weren't for the attention to detail that has been put into everything else in the room, including the pretty mason-jar lighting over the bed.
The minibar in the room was extremely well stocked, and we found the prices very reasonable. You could basically have a cocktail in your room for $9 ($3 full-size soda and $6 largish mini booze), which is the happy hour price in the lounge. Cocktails after happy hour (which is generous from 5-8pm) are $13. We had the '7' and it was delish.
The limousine service is such a good idea!
Staff was overall indifferently helpful. They seemed surprised to be asked for something, but managed to rally and muster some degree of interest in the issue at hand. When we mentioned that there was no heat in the room, there was a slight eye-roll accompanied by a 'did *you* turn it on?', but then another staff immediately offered to come up to the room with us and fixed the issue. I would expect a bit more friendly service from a not-inexpensive hotel, and since I live in NYC, I am totally over the hipster style of service.
Overall, a very good hotel. Would recommend for people visiting for the first time.
