“Great location, unadorned quarters”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2013

The best thing about Hotel Vetiver is its location two quick subway stops away from Lexington and 59th in Manhattan. I chose it over the slightly posher Holiday Inn across the street because the Vetiver provides free breakfast. Our room, however, lacked some basic amenities, like a reading light, nightstand, and desk. While the mattress and pillows were comfortable, the bed was made with only one thin coverlet, and we had to ask for more covers. The desk staff was consistently helpful. The catering staff needed to be more attentive to the small, crowded breakfast room.

Would I stay here again? Yes, because of the location and reasonable price (for NYC). But first, I would check out the other nearby hotels, including one that is being built right across the street.

Room Tip: The stairs are a lot faster than the one overworked elevator, so it would help to have a room on a l...

The hotel was quite well located, easy to get to even later at night. Hotel employees are customer focused and easy going, none of our requests were ignored, quite the opposite. Breakfast was all right, however it could be better managed by the catering supervisor. Daily room clean and change of towels was a bonus. The Aircon was noisy, located next to the bed, and switches on through the night - not for light sleepers. We were given a wonderful room with a great view. When they found out it was my friend's birthday they went out of their way to celebrate the event. The staff, again, was simply wonderful. We had the best time, thanks to them. Will definitely go here again and highly recommend.

We moved into this hotel, just opposite to Holiday Inn (where we were staying) as Holiday Inn was over booked and could not provide us a room for two more days when we extended our trip in New York. It's a small old property presently undergoing renovation on certain floors. But still the work did not create any problem during our two nights stay. The staff was very friendly and catered to our requests promptly, as the first room they gave us was too small and not properly clean. the next room we checked in was just prefect.

Room Tip: While the renovation is on process, choose a floor which is not under construction.

While searching for a hotel in Long Island City, we looked for a hotel that was in an area that was accessible to the subway, had a breakfast provided, had options for parking our car, and had unique charm. Hotel Vetiver provides all of this. There was a big mixup with our reservation which was made through Travelocity. Although the hotel was unable to provide us with the room that Travelocity sold us (because it no longer existed, and they were booked to capacity) they did make an excellent effort to rectify the situation. We were very pleased with the resolution.

While at the hotel, we felt safe, slept well, and really enjoyed the breakfast (yogurt, fresh bagels, fresh fruit, juice/coffee/tea). Everything was pretty well stocked--we were there at about 8:30am. We parked our car in a nearby U-Haul parking garage, which was about 2 blocks away, and cost $20 (cash) for the overnight. The street parking was filled up. We felt a bit more secure being in the garage anyway.

As another reviewer stated, there is a deposit required on the room to cover any expenses that you may have while you are visiting. We were there for one night, and the fee was $50. This is refunded upon your departure, if you pay cash. This is what we did. If you put it on your card, it takes a couple of days before it is removed. Don't misplace your receipt!!

We stayed in a superior queen room with an extra double bed put in to accommodate us and our three small-ish children in one room (a rarity which saved us booking two rooms so a huge plus).

Staff were very welcoming and friendly, especially Rishon the bellhop ( who in addition to ferrying our bags around appeared promptly to unlock the bathroom door one of the kids managed to lock with nobody in the bathroom!). Reception were helpful, giving us a map and offering directions to places we wanted to go, and also keeping our bags for the day on the day we checked out.

Breakfast was basic continental with fresh bagels. The woman overseeing refIlling everything was on top of it as it was quite busy after 9am.

Location is excellent, just a block to the N and Q lines and 10 minutes into Manhattan. We had a nice view from our balcony.

For the price I was thrilled with the service, the cleanliness and comfort of the room, and the convenient location.

If I could give half stars I would rate 3.5.

Pros:
- Good value - 5 nights for about $1200 including tax
- Close to subway - 3 minute walk to subway then 2 stops to Manhattan & felt safe walking to & from hotel to subway
- Front desk staff friendly
- Breakfast included (nice breakfast)
- Nice room decor & the hotel has a personal feel about it

Cons:
- Noisy heater turning on & off made it hard to sleep & there is a hotel being built across the road with work starting at 7.15 on weekdays (though this is obviously not Hotel Vetiver's fault)
- No nice restaurants in the region that I knew of - with kids it would have been nice to come back, have a rest in the room then go out and grab a quick bite - but there was only one deli nearby to do this
- Service from front desk staff variable - all were friendly but knowledge of the area not great. When we enquired on where we could go for a quick brunch we were recommended a street 3 streets away - the options there weren't great but I since heard we could have gone 2 stops to Broadway for good options. My daughter was sick and I needed a pharmacy on a Sunday - received very vague directions from person at front desk at Hotel Vetiver so went over the road to another hotel & asked at the reception there - who said there will be nothing open in this area on a Sunday - I needed to catch a subway - and gave me exact directions. When my daughter was sick in middle of the night I rang front desk to get sheets - I told me they couldn't help because housekeeping was shut - I was flabbergasted - after another wait they advised they could give us some clean sheets but not put them on the bed (which I didn't expect anyway). Another time I rang front desk to ask how to use the coffee filter - I was told housekeeping would come up but after an hour no one had arrived. I went down to the front desk and someone then came up to show me.
- Internet access not always available - not such a big issue for us but would be for business people
- At breakfast the person assigned to breakfast duty had a hard time keeping everything stocked with the number of people - so hit and miss on whether you could get some things - maybe could have more than one coffee out at a time? (having said that - the breakfast was nice - cereal, milk, bagels and fruit if you were there at right time & yoghurt)
- My husband lost the voucher for the $50 deposit we paid and we were told it couldn't be refunded without it - in this day and age I would think it wouldn't be hard to have a cash deposit scheme that doesn't rely on customer not losing ticket (we did find it eventually). The deposit can be done on credit card but we chose the cash option. We were told not to lose the ticket but still surely there could be a note on paperwork to indicate the customer paid a $50 cash deposit...
- No dedicated kids channels or movies on demand - not a big deal as really we should have been out seeing the sights - but given family sickness had to spend more time in the room than expected...

This is a nice hotel but I think if we went to NY again we would stay somewhere closer to restaurants.

We booked this hotel partly because of previous reviews and partly because of it's proximity to both Manhattan and the subway. As we were travelling with my wife's 87 year old mother these were the two most important factors. I am happy to say that the hotel fully lived up to it's previous reviews. Our rooms was very large with a huge comfortable bed and a very good shower in the bathroom. Mother-in-law's room was one with a small kitchenette and was again very large. Her room was at the back of the hotel and quieter, whilst ours had a wonderful view from the balcony of the Queensboro bridge, although as we were at the front it was quite noisy due to the proximity of the subway - earplugs, as mentioned in previous reviews, solved this small issue. Breakfast was simple but good, being bagels, madeira, fruit, cereals and yoghurt. The staff were amazing and nothing was too much trouble for them, at any time of day. The left luggage facility was very useful on our day home. The only issues we had were that the lift was slow, the crudos bar was not serving food and the breakfast room small for the size of the hotel and filled up very quickly - small issues that did nothing to change our opinion of the hotel. By the 39th street station there is a very simple but very good Diner (Zante's) that we used several times - food there is good, inexpensive and plentiful, and the service is brilliant. Overall a good experience and we will certainly recommend Vetiver to anyone who asks.

Room Tip: For the view, a front room with balcony, but take earplugs. For quietness a rear room.
