“good alternative to pricy Manhattan”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

stayed in Best Western Plaza over the Christmas period and found the hotel a good alternative to more expensive Manhattan hotels. Location is great, a block away from metro station and 3stops takes you to Central Park, 4 stops to Rockefeller Center.
The hotel itself wasn't of great quality, but the room was pretty good, good size, clean and comfortable.
Staff at reception was helpful, had no problem changing a room, when had issue with the first one.
Two let downs of this hotel is breakfast and WiFi.
The breakfast place is very small, only have about 10 tables for a hotel of 10 floors, so you will have to wait when hotel is busy.
The selection is not too varied, only have pastries, doughnuts, pancake and a scrambled eggs, but no cheese or a bit of cold meat.
You get the code for WiFi at checkin, but the network is full quite often, leaving you without connection.
Overall you get what you paying for, nothing fancy, but convenient stay close to the action.
Oh and if you lucky, you got a view to Manhattan from the room.

Room Tip: stay away from rooms next to ice cube machine, those machines are pretty noisy

Nice clean hotel, comfortable bed and large room. Great location for getting into Mahattan but because of proximity to the train line, it was difficult to sleep. Providing ear plugs to guests would be a very good idea

Needs improvement in availability of parking spaces. Location for hotel and its entrance should be more clear and prominent. Staff was very hardworking and helpful. Breakfast was good. Decoration of lobby area was excellent.

Stayed there for one night. It is undoubtedly a Best Western, nothing more. Satisfactorily clean, free internet, the cable tv is not so great. Free continental breakfast (we did not use that perk). Staff is average. Nothing to do around the hotel, though. No restaurants (besides your Subway, which, btw, was awful), nothing to see or do. But it served its purpose.

I've noticed that some of the reviewers are complaining about the location. And yes it's defenetly true that it's not the most glamorous area and you probably do not wanna hang out outside much in the evenings. But hey, atleast we where in New York for the reason to see sighst in Manhattan and not spend much time in the hotel or the neighborhood. And if this is what you are looking for this is defenetly a option to think of as the access to Manhattan is really good.

This is a sister hotel with Howard Johson.Same type of buildings next to each others. Both of them having their own pros and cons. I stayed in both and hard to say which one is better. One way to choose would probably be to take the one where you can get a cheaper deal.

Pros:
-Quick access to Manhattan. The nearest subway stop is on 21st street just couple hundred meters away on the same street. It's just two stops to Manhattan close to Central Park and two more for example to Rockefeller.
-Room was very clean. And as a big plus we had room from eight floor with nice view to Queensborogh bridge and Manhattan.
-there is Subway and some other fast food places next to hotel aswell as small supermarket where you can get the snacks and beers.
-All the hotel staff were really helpful and nice.

Cons:
-The area where the hotel is situated is bit shaggy..but then again most of the visitors like us will spent the days sightseeing Manhattan so this was not an issue atleast for us.
-Wifi was really poor. Could not use it as the maximum limit for users was already filled..the signal is really poor also. This is something they really should improve. The signal might be better in other rooms ofcourse so if internet is important ask a room where it assumably works well. There is laso two free PC's in for customer use in 1R floor.
-The breakfast...Yep, it's free continental breakfast but nothint to really brag about. It is unbelievable that a hotel this size can have such a small place for breakfast. So if you do not have cows nerves and want to start your day with long queuing at breakfast line fighting for donuts or jelly toasts then you should come either really early or really late to breakfast.
Or if you your budget can handle it have a breakfast the next door subway or go to Manhattan.
-There was some strange bugs in one of the cups in our hotel room.Defenetly something that the cleniars should have noticed and change the cups but they hadn't

TIPS:
Step of from the subway at Roosevelt island (next step) and take the Air tram to Manhattan (it costs same as subway ride 2.25 dollars).Even though it's short ride it's really nice way to see cool views..especially at sunset time it's really beautiful. And ofcourse you can take the ride otherway also.
There is also a nice inexpensive Japanese restaurant with good sushi at the island located. between the Airtram and subway stop.

Room Tip: Ask a room from higher floor with Manhattan view.

We were at this hotel from 12/6/12-12/8/12 to celebrate my daughter and her friend's 16th birthday. The price of the hotel was great. (Remember you are in New York.) The staff was friendly and the hotel was clean. There is a limited amount of free parking. Breakfast was included and wasn't the greatest but was sufficient. The rooms were a little cramped for 4 people but worked out fine. The subway was less then a block away; from the hotel entrance to Rockafeller Center it took about 20 minutes by the subway which was awesome. (No driving and parking which was great.) We felt safe the entire time.

The hotel gives you fair warning on its website that its free parking is limited. However, priceline, hotels.com and other 3rd party providers just list this hotel as having free parking. There is on-street parking, but the area is a bit sketchy. My advise is to get to the hotel early for the free parking. If you miss out, as I did for one night, you may feel uncomfortable about the area or street cleaning that may happen the next morning (which the hotel warns you in writing at the desk). Another plus, was that they let me keep my car there until 7pm or so the day we checked out so we could continute to explore the city.

Rooms are small, but the beds are comfortable and furniture and TV are updated. The websites state there is free continental breakfast, which I always assume is very basic (like no eggs or other items that need cooking). This hotel provides scrambled eggs, pancakes along with yogurt, cereal, begals, toast, donuts, etc.

The hotel is a 2 minute walk to the Metro. As with the parking, the area can be sketchy, so if you are from a small town or not used to big city living (where there can be bad areas), this may be of some concern to you. We paid about $100/night with free parking. I really was just looking for a deal close to the city to take trips to Manhattan (about 15mins subway ride) for sight seeing with my family (2 girls, 8 and 12). In all, with the cost, free parking, free internet and free breakfast. An incredible deal after taking all of the above into account.
