“Unhelpful staff spoils good value NY hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2010

Stayed three nights in a Whirlpool suite at the Country Inn in Queens. The room was large a spacious, with a good-sized plasma TV, coffee maker, microwave and a fridge.

The hotel is a block and a half from a subway station which is just a few minutes from Manhattan. One of the largest public housing projects of the US, Queensbridge, is three blocks from the hotel. For me this was fine, because I wanted to visit the neighborhood in which Nas grew up.

A major point for improvement would be the helpfulness of the staff. When I requested that my frequent flyer card be swiped for miles, the two people working the front desk acted as if they never heard of a such thing. In addition, they were quite impatient in explaining to other guests why they needed their credit card. Clearly, these guests had never prepaid a stay before, and weren't aware of the practice of using the card for incidentals only.

Breakfast was included in the price. Although it was self-served on paper plates, there was something for everyone. I suggest the hotel get waffle irons in which the waffles don't stick as much though.

I suggest the hotel improve the soundproofing. A lot of noise could be heard from the the hallway through the door.

Three free computer (they called it a business center) in the lobby was a nice surprise.

All in all, the unhelpful staff, if not ruined, then at least spoiled a good stay. Although the value for money was good, I still would not recommend staying at the Country Inn in Queens.

It was a really nice surprise. It is an incredible hotel in New York. Much better than hotels in Manhattan and much cheaper. It is located in an excellent place, just 10 min walking from the hotel to the queensboro station and then just 15 min by subway to Time Square. It is a nice and clean area.

Moreover, the hotel is new!! Everything is new in the hotel, great staff, nice rooms. I am completely sure I will come back to the hotel for my future visit to the city

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. Upon arrival, all of the hotel’s parking spots were taken up. We drove just past the intersection and on our right was a surface parking lot for $15/day. The lot was fenced with barbed wire and I think the attendant was on duty 24/7.

Our room was in the basement level. It was small but clean. I expected small since we are in New York. The bed was comfortable and we were able to sleep well. A complimentary hot breakfast was provided and it was very popular with the guests. We had to wait for our seats on the first two mornings and decided to bring food back to the room on the third.

The location is good and bad. As others have mentioned, it’s in a run down neighbourhood but at no time did I feel unsafe. The hotel is easily accessible since the subway station is about a 3 minute walk and then you are about 10 minutes to Central Park or 30 minutes to Wall Street or the Staten Island Ferry.

When we go back to New York, I would be happy to stay here again.

We stayed 5 nights then went to Niagara falls and came back for 3 nights.
we booked on line and paid $us 99 per night which was really good compared to manhattan prices. This was a prepaid rate.
Read the review 2 subway stops-this covers pretty much everything.
Note take a 7 train to Times Square but a W or N will take you further afield.
Buy a 7 day metro pass-covers train and bus.
There are a couple of cheap diners by the subway-the Mexican one is pretty good.
Petes Grill is a short bus ride and is good-flyers at the hotel.nOt hard to get to.
A W train will take you to canal st then a short walk to Mulberry is little Italy-great restaurants.China town is here also..
Overall the hotel is pretty good-very central and lots cheaper than Manhattan.
We would stay again

Very new, 4 minute walk to the purple 7 subway, which takes you to central station or on to times square. At under 100 a night good price for new hotel in NYC! Free breakfast a great bonus.

We stayed 4 nights in Room 710 and had to call every night for directions to get to the Hotel. The area is not pretty. Their is a taxi mechanics garage across the street and a gas station adjacent to the hotel. The area is safe, our room clean and spacious. The bed was hard however and the pillows were uncomfortable. We had a mini fridge and a microwave. The bathroom was spacious and shower pressure was good. We ordered delivery from ROMAN'S, great pizza and pasta and quick delivery. The parking area is right outside the hotel lobby so you have to manuever your way onto the sidewalk to park. Only 6 spaces or find parking on the street, which can be tricky since there is a fire hydrant and the opening to the gas station on sides of the hotel. There is a Holiday Inn Express and The Verve hotel close by. We were charged $115 at check out, although we reserved for $110, which in either case is too much for this hotel. The staff could have been robots for all they did. No smiles, no warm and friendly greetings. The breakfast was fine for this type of hotel. The staff should improve on thier customer service skills, provide maps on how to get to the hotel from various points, upgrade mattresses and pillows, better rates ($79-$89) and provide printed directions to nearest parking garages.

We were looking for an inexpensive hotel that was clean but convenient to the tourist areas of Manhattan and we got more than we had anticipated. Great value. We booked directly with the hotel site and got a tremendous deal of $59 US per night and stayed 5 nights mid March. We booked early January and the price went up after that. In fact we asked to stay an extra night once we were down there and were quoted $149 a night so we declined and just stayed with friends in Brooklyn instead.
Hotel good points....
~clean and modern updated furnishings
~very comfortable bed and clean linens
~clean modern washroom with good water pressure
~we found the room (room 911) quiet although previous posters mentioned noise from some rooms. ours was not far from the elevators
~great view of the city and we could see how busy the Queensboro bridge was
~plenty to eat at breakfast although the same thing each day (waffles (spray the pan first!!!), fruit, yogurt, bagels, toast, donuts, muffins, cereals, sausages, scrambled eggs in disc shapes, juices, coffee, tea, hot chocolate....don't really know how much more people were expecting for that price???? if they run out of something ask the guy and he'll be more than happy to get you more unless it's closing time. don't wait till the end.
~free internet in our room. others mentioned bad connection but we had no problems
~4 minute walk to subway. go out hotel doors, turn right and walk to second road and turn left and the station entrance is on your left. we wished we had printed a google map prior to the trip with the subway stops and nearby streets. it can get confusing as there are actually 3 nearby subway stops and some streets are on angles so not as easy as you think. we only took subway during day time and took a cab home (most cabs home were about $15) we got the subway pass for the week. it took us about 15 minutes to get to the central park area. great value!
~free parking and our car was safe the entire time. we counted about 12 spots and they were almost always taken so once you get your spot...keep it!

Note: there is not much right near the hotel for dinners so you should arrange for eating out elsewhere.

We would go there again but the rates will most likely go up because once the secret gets out that this place is so close to downtown then it will be busier.

If you want good value go here!
