“Great location and price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 days ago NEW

We booked this hotel as a family of four adults, so needed two rooms. Given we visited in Aug/Sep prices in Manhattan were beyond our budget so we looked further afield. We found this highly recommended and can agree with all of that. The hotel is brilliantly situated just a short walk from Queensboro Plaza subway station which has two lines running through it (7 and N/Q). Ideal for just a few stops to Times Square or Grand Central and just as importantly for the 7 Line which runs out to Flushing Meadow where we watched some of the US Open Tennis. So very very easy to get to anywhere we wanted to go sightseeing or shopping.

The hotel itself is pretty basic, but the rooms are clean, large and the beds huge and very comfortable. The breakfast buffet is worth having even though it is a bit limited in healthy choices. Fine if you like carbohydrates!! The gym is small but functional. The wifi is free throughout the hotel which was great for us and our boys.

The staff were polite and efficient but I have to say they were not overly welcoming and were not great at coming forward with ideas or assistance. But if you take the initiative and ask them, they are very helpful. Also it is worth requesting a room away from the road (ie a Manhattan view room) as the street outside is very busy in the morning rush hour, and watch out for garbage collection days!

Room Tip: Rooms with a Manhattan view avoid the morning traffic noise on the other side.

We found this place on a last minute search to spend a night in the city for some R&R. Great location - close to a train station - convenient lines to Uptown and Downtown locations. Hard to find cheap parking close by - just two safe lots that close early for the night, no street parking possible. No major restaurants close by - just a bunch of sandwich shop by the station that is 3 blocks away. Got lucky with a room on the top floor with a view of the city! unfortunately the windows were grimy so could not take picture of sunset and night light - was great to look. Room was nice size, quiet, good HVAC. Nice complementary toiletries. Room had MW and fridge - TV with NO HD and very minimal number of channels (strange nowadays, guess they expect us to be in the city or watch though the grimy windows). One issues I realized later - due to skin rash the next day - the room was infested with BED BUGS. Had red marks and itch all over the next day. The breakfast buffet had lots of choices and great coffee. Found cheese spread for the bagels mushy - sign of improper storage - had to open several before finding one that was good. The bed bugs killed it for me as a return location even though everything else was great and would have been my choice location for a quick escape ...

I specifically looked for a suite hotel that would (legally) accommodate 5 people as we are a family of 5 (3 young children and 2 adults). This was the only option that I found that:

- quick access to Manhattan
- under $200/night in summer season
- relatively close to our relatives in Queens

I found the hotel to be acceptable considering our needs. Some notes:

- There are a few parking spots in front of the hotel, but no one seems to park there, or it is blocked off. We were fortunate enough to find parking on the street (we parked it for the duration of our stay) right by the hotel. Parking is free but street cleaning is Monday and cars have to be moved during that time (we were there Tue-Fri)

- I don't think any of the suites have a view. Our suite had a king room plus a futon in the sitting area. Our kids are small enough so they could fit on the futon, but the suite would not be large enough for 5 adults. Also, even though it was clear that someone was sleeping on the futon, housekeeping kept taking the extra sheet (used to cover the kids) each day, leaving only the sheet that they slept on. I got extra ones at reception without issue.

- The floor is supposed to be non-smoking, but there still seemed to be a stale smoke smell

- Furnishings a bit worn (lamp shade was cracked) and there was a stain on the floor, but the suite was reasonably clean. I didn't see any bugs.

- We never had a problem finding a table at breakfast but we generally went down before 8. There is a wide variety (cereal, juices, doughnuts, bagels, toast, eggs, sausage, potatoes, waffles). The waffles (make your own) were good, the potatoes were not. No fruit, except bananas. Can't really complain as it was free!

- Free wifi, didn't experience any issues with this.

- Street noise in the morning as it was located right across from a cab depot. But this is NYC, so was expected. Also the A/C (fan) was loud, but we had it on high since it was hot. If you really have an issue with noise, perhaps bring earplugs.

- I didn't find the neighborhood sketchy, but we generally only walked between the hotel and the subway. My husband walked around at bit and he said it did not feel unsafe, and that it seemed that the residents of that area were fairly young. The subway is very close (1 block away), and only 5 stops to Time Square. There is a fairly well stocked grocery store at the gas station next store which was convenient to pick up drinks and snacks. We had some good Mexican food from one of the places in the area.

Overall, I found the hotel convenient for all our needs, and would stay there again. In any case, i would definitely stay in Long Island City again, as it was close to Manhattan but not at Manhattan prices! I think single rooms at this hotel can be booked for much cheaper, but really i stayed here because of the availability of the suites

Don't be fooled by the pictures on the Internet. The lobby and rooms are rundown. They do provide a "hot" breakfast but it is mostly cold. On the plus side, the proximity to the subway line is very convenient and why we picked the hotel in the first place. We were just surprised by how rundown it is based on the internet photos.

We expected a sofa/bed in our one bedroom suite.Instead we got a crummy metal futon that was unmanageable for sitting or sleeping. Houskeeping left behind more messes than we did. Doubt that the room was vacuumed. Four days into our stay, the fraud unit for my husband's credit card company called saying that Country Inn and charged $5.00 that morning and wanted to know if he authorized it otherwise the card would be shut down. Since the room was under that card we had to okay it. When we questioned that staff they denied it up and down until we said the fraud unit called us-then they said they had, but not to worry because it was denied and all was fine. After several times asking why they did it at all, they claimed it for incidentals. Really??? $5.00??? 4 days after check in and no mention of this up front??? Nothing on the check out statement. There's more, but not enough space.

Room Tip: Couldn't say. we overlooked a cab body repair shop in a crummy neighborhood.

The hotel is ideally located near the Subway. It is reasonably priced. There is not much to do, see, eat near the hotel but within 5-10 minutes on the subway you can be at most of the attractions in Manhattan. The rooms are comfortable, but not fancy.

Can't go wrong with this hotel. Very close to Manhattan. Frankly, your position in or around Manhattan is relative as you will no doubt have to travel no matter where you are. Midtown Manhattan is a bit boring so a hotel right in the middle is not necessary.
This hotel was near to tube, sorry, Metro stations and quite convenient to do most of New York.
Breakfast was brill and as long as you time it well there is no issue regarding a crowded breakfast area. Lot's of choice and will set you up for the day. Hotel is clean and friendly. Don't get too hung up about the surrounding area. Although not a clean as maybe the centre of Manhattan, who cares. It's safe.
Subways are close by. We were very concious about our spend budget so we used public transport. always, even to/from the airport. Buy your 7 day unlimited metro pass from the kiosk at Jamaica metro station (if using JFK) @ $30 each. You will have to pay for your Airtrain ride from JFK to Jamaica station ($5 pp). Metro cards don't cover this. You will also save the $1 new-card issue fee, per ticket, if you buy your metro pass at the kiosk.
Enjoy New york. We hammered it in 4 days. 2 Adults and four grown up kids.

Room Tip: Don't pay extra for a city view. You'll be doing Manahattan on foot and will be too tired to...
