“Well worth the cost”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2013

We got a great deal with this hotel, really close to the subway with free breakfast. We stayed here April 2013 for a week at $106 a night. 5 minutes to Manhattan. Rooms clean. The only complaint I had was it felt like a sauna in the hallways...and I am from Texas and heat doesn't bother me.

My boyfriend and I stayed at the hotel from 26/08/13-02/09/2013 on the recommendation of a friend-after reading the previous reviews we booked with a little trepidation! However the hotel was absolutely fine, its not snazzy high end but for the price it does the job and more! The area appeared quiet with office buildings and a few residential blocks not a lot to do so if you want drink/food/shops etc you have to venture a little further, however there is a handy garage next door which stocks pretty much everything you'd need. The Queensborough subway is at the bottom of the road (5 min walk max) which gets you to Times Square/Manhattan in under 10 mins. For a taxi we paid no more than $20 from Manhattan to the hotel. The hotel staff were pleasant, the rooms were basic but clean and had a v.comy bed and handy little fridge. We never had any problems with anybody stealing from our room but as a precaution we kept valuables and money out of sight. The breakfast was OK and can get a bit crowded but again for the price you cannot grumble! As a veggie i got my fill on scrambled eggs, cereal, toast and bagels!
For the price the hotel was spot on and we would recommend especially for those who want to stay in New York on a budget, but if you do have a bit more to spend i would say treat yourself and stay closer to Manhattan and Times Square for the atmosphere and the action!

Check in OK. Staff not most friendly but ok. Problem of room location was sorted quickly. Room was adequate in size, cleanliness, location and facilities. Housekeeping was ok. Breakfast was FREE, you are not going to get steak and salmon, but cereals, cakes, muffins, bread, bagels with spreads and jams etc, waffle maker, fruit, yoghurts and the "sausage and eggs" were ok. Disposable plates and cutlery - this is for quick turnarounds to assist with the busy tables in the breakfast room. Free coffee and cookies 24hours a day in reception!! Wifi was free and very quick and easy. Location of hotel to public transport is fantastic. Less than 5 mins to Queensborough Plaza. Area is not most select but is safe, 24hours a day. Stealing - this has been mentioned on a number of occasions. We kept valuables in our room in our cases which were locked with a pair of TSA approved locks(Amazon - less than £8). Theft is theft, but take basic precautions. recommend Packard's café and Grill just down the road on the way to the station for cheap and good substantial food. I would stay again. Its a City chain hotel, not a guest house in a private location with a couple running the place. Who goes on vacation to spend time in a hotel room?? except for sleeping, washing and safe storage.

Room Tip: Choice High floor City view room, BUT not near Lifts or Ice machines.

They stole me in the room when I was out and the personnel of receipt has wanted neither to be able anything, nor answer for anything, they are a few scoundrels. The rooms do not clean them because the sheets do not change when a client goes during one night and the breakfast is of bad quality in comparison with others, it is a bad country in. , bad experience. The manager even worse, does not face the consequences to solve the problem of the theft suffered in my room

Room Tip: The worst hotel where I have been and assure that I have been in many

Stayed here as a couple for a week in September 2013.

The best thing about this hotel was the price - we paid $150 per night for our city view room, and you just can't find a room for that price with a private bathroom in Manhattan. The room itself was spacious & clean, with a handy fridge & microwave. Decent sized bathroom with plenty of surface space for toiletries. Comfortable bed. The air con was quite noisy so we tended to just open a window at night instead.

The location was good. The subway (Queensboro Plaza) is a short 2 min walk away, and is a major station which connects to Manhattan quickly and easily. Right next door to the hotel is a 24 hour petrol station which was well stocked. It's a busy area and so we always felt quite safe walking to and from the hotel even late at night.

The main downside to our stay was the breakfast. The breakfast room is nowhere big enough for the amount of guests, and on one occasion we had to take our food back to our room as there were no spare tables. The variety of the food was pretty disappointing - small cereal selection, yoghurts, doughnuts, mini muffins, bananas, tasteless egg patties and something resembling sausage. Coffee is from a vending machine & all the crockery, cutlery and cups are disposable. One of the days we went one stop on the subway to Court Square and had breakfast at the diner there - would recommend this as an alternative!

Overall, other than the disappointing breakfast, we enjoyed a great stay at this hotel with no problems.

Room Tip: Choose a city room on a higher floor for a view of Manhattan.

I’m an easy going Kiwi, not a lot bothers me, which is why I really need to warn people about staying here. Sure, it’s cheap, but it is not a nice place to stay. Here is a list of what we encountered:
1. Toilet not working correctly and light bulb out on arrival. Fixed by management, but with no apology offered.
2. Broken arm on a chair in the room which I almost fell off.
3. Rubbish on the floor- substandard housekeeping.
4. After housekeeping had been done, long dark hairs left on the bathroom floor (I’m blond and my partner is a bloke with very short hair).
5. Stains on the bed sheets (shudder)
6. Wi-Fi out in the hotel, that we were not advised of when we returned, walking past reception, and when we called, we were advised it was going to be out for 4 hours, and there was no offer of a cord for the working wired internet. Wi-Fi still down the following morning, again, no apology, nor attempt to fix anything.
7. We lost a battery behind the fridge and TV stand which we had to move to retrieve, and discovered so much miscellaneous rubbish down there, it was evident this had never been cleaned.
8. The second door card we were provided with stopped working, twice, and it was only the second time it was reprogrammed that reception bothered to mention that if the cards are kept near a cell phone or a wallet then it will stop them working. This should have been mentioned at check in, as why would I not keep a door card in my wallet? Strange that the other card, kept in my partner’s wallet didn’t malfunction. Guess I just have more powerful credit cards than him.
9. Had to wait 20 minutes for the reception person to come back from the bathroom…20 minutes…hmm…
10. Lack of adequate lighting in the fitness center, only 6 of the 12 lights were working, and I could never get the treadmill going. Other than that the fitness center was cleaner than our room.
11. Rude and disinterested reception staff, who just plain don’t care, and don’t mind showing it.
Sure, it’s cheap, but is it really worth it? It coloured our opinion of New York. Check-in and check-out were quick, if from staff showing little or no interest in the fact we were staying with them for 6 nights, and paying to do so. The only saving grace for the hotel is the really good Mobile station next door, and the lovely service provided by the staff at the Laundromat just down the road.
Avoid if at all possible.
