“Pros and cons”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2013

We stayed 1 week in NYC at the Verve Hotel and this is my review:
+
Big room (we had a "suite")
Complimentary breakfast and newspapers
Complimentary coffee
Coffee/tea machine in our room
Very close to 2 tube stations - well linked
Free Internet

-
Room cleaning (in my opinion they just made the bed and changed towels, the bathroom floor was sticky and the bath was often in the same conditions of the previous day)
Bathroom: in 2013 a shower stall would be really appreciated!
Curtains were quite dirty
Same breakfast products every day (waffles though awesome)
Staff could be kinder (when we checked out they didn't even asked us about our stay)
Payment: we were on honeymoon and booked the hotel via travel agency. When our agency was about to prepay the hotel stay, we were told it was mandatory, once there, to show the same credit card used for payment so we personallly had to pay for it (I must say the agency also offered to make a bank transfer and they refused!) I would have loved spending those money for some shopping.....no flexibility!)

We selected this hotel to avoid staying in the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, and are congratulating ourselves (and Trip Advisor reviewers, of course) on our decision.
The hotel is clean, safe, functions without pages of instructions and notices, and has a service ethos which others should study and copy. As an example, when we arrived and checked in there were two employees taking laundry up in the lift - a lift arrived as we left reception, and immediately they both stepped back, said "You take this one" and declined the offer to travel with us, instead taking another lift.
The reception staff are genuinely friendly and helpful, an attitude which permeates the hotel employees from the manager downwards.
When a party of six were sitting drinking coffee for a long time at breakfast, the manager saw the potential issue of others arriving to eat, and offered the six ladies the option of taking their coffee outside "as it is such a lovely day and we have a nice outside area for guests to use". Smooth!
We had a slight issue with a sink, and it was resolved with no fuss and no delay.
Another guest asked at reception for a plate and some cutlery as she had brought food in and did not wish to spill it in her room. The employee got the plate and cutlery, and gently suggested that the guest should have rung reception and they would have brought it up for her. That's service!
There are three computers for guests' use, and free Wi-Fi for those who bring their own.
The self-service breakfast was fine, a choice of waffles, egg and sausage/meat patties, breads and rolls, cereals, toast, cold and hot drinks, and the helpful staff were very attentive, replacing as required throughout the service period.
The Metro is a few minutes' walk away and easy to use - Times Square was often reached within 10 minutes of leaving our room.
We had a fifth floor room overlooking a school parking lot and the Manhattan skyline, with no street noise to disturb us.
Value for money - you betcha!
Would we stay again? Yes indeed.
Do we recommend the Verve? Yes indeed.

Room Tip: Higher floors, facing Manhattan = less street noise and less air-con noise

this hotel has perfect staff, which will help with any questions . which we had many during the week it is very clean in all parts of the hotel with a lovely sit out place to catch the sun the breakfast is included in the price ok not the same as a 4 or 5 star hotel buffet but it is all that you need pretty good I would say. the rooms are very clean with micro , tea and coffee maker and a fridge.this was the first time in long island city as we usually stay in manhattan in the upper west in a very nice aparthotel but this time the price was very expensive so we decied to stay at the verve so glad we did much cheaper because not in manhattan but only 10 mins away with 3 subway stations to choose from, great eating places 4 blocks away only $40 to the airport with car that hotel got us all in all a very good place to stay yes we have stayed in in lots of top hotels around the world with over the top prices and furnishings but the verve has everything you need and is very clean so what more do you need

Room Tip: ask for high floor with two windows

My hubby and I stayed at this hotel the weekend before July 4th and we were blown away! We only had to take a cab to and from the hotel, we went everywhere else using the subway. Tom was extremely helpful with directions, subway navigation and recommendations on attractions. He is a good ol'southern boy :O)
The room was clean and spacious, the rates we got were pretty reasonable. The area seemed safe and we had access to two different subway connections which was helpful in getting around.
The free breakfast was average at best, but they did have a nice cappuccino machine that could be accessed 24/7.
Would definitely stay here again!

We are a retired couple who have averaged 3 international vacations per year over the past decade. We stayed for a week at the Verve Hotel, in September 2013, based on its #1 Tripadvisor ranking. However, after we arrived, we too wondered why this hotel is ranked as the best in Long Island City when it only receives a 3 star rating from travel booking websites. Probably the answer has 3 parts:
1) The other 20 hotels in the area, with 2 exceptions, are rated as 3 stars or less. ie. There are no luxury hotels in Long Island City to compare the Verve to.
2) The vast majority of patrons of this hotel are young couples who likely have not stayed in luxury hotels and are unable to make a valid quality comparison.
3) It would appear that most reviewers are using the Tripadvisor bubble system to indicate how satisfied they are with their stay. So the large number of 5-bubble scores (that give the Verve a #1 rank on Tripadvisor) really mean that most people were very satisfied with their time in this budget hotel.

Why do I keep calling the Verve a budget hotel (albeit a good one)? It's quality is about equal to a basic Best Western (which usually gets a 2 1/2 to 3 star rating on Expedia, etc):
a) The rooms are reasonably large but are very plainly furnished and decorated. The flat- screen TVs are cheap ones with very poor resolution, adequate for news and sitcoms but very annoying for sports. Although there is extra space, the only chair in the King room is a desk chair. However, the rooms are very clean and the beds are comfortable.
b) The breakfast is a basic one. There are 4 choices of junk-food cold cereals, oatmeal hot cereal, scrambled eggs, sausage patties, cheese, and pancake mix. Coffee, milk, orange and apple juice are the drink selections. There a several different breads and donuts. Fresh fruit is in short supply; bananas and apples rotate on a daily basis. On the positive side, the breakfast room is bright and spacious and spotlessly clean.
c) The area surrounding the Verve is an older industrial neighborhood with tattered buildings and crumbling sidewalks. Four churches are within 100 yards but there are few decent restaurants. (Beware the Holiday Inn restaurant which is one block away; see my review on it.) However, the area is safe and 3 subway stations are a 5 minute walk away. You can get to Times Square in 10 minutes!
d) Equipment seems to suffer from maintenance problems. For 2 days the TV sports channels were off-line. One morning the internet was down. Our shower did not work properly. Our room's safe jammed shut on 2 consecutive days. Some keys on the business center computers do not work properly. However, the staff members were very sympathetic and had the problems fixed as soon as possible.

In summary, we would come back here because it meets all our needs. However, if you are thinking of staying at the Verve, read a lot of reviews about this hotel so you know exactly what you are getting. And finally, here are hints on price and room location: If you are staying for several days, go on the Verve website and register as a club member. Then you can pay in advance and receive a good discount on the room rate. We paid $123 per night compared to the advertised price of about $160. With breakfast included, that's a very good price for a New York hotel. Regarding room location, ask for one on the Manhattan side. If they don't honor that request, as in our case, you will hear subway trains all night unless you turn up the air-conditioner fan.

We went to the US Open Tennis Tournament and this hotel was very close by subway. Every staff employee I talked to was friendly and very helpful. They gave directions to the subway, gave directions to Juniors near Times Square, and even gave directions by subway to the closest Starbucks. The room itself was very roomy and comfortable - plenty of pillows (four) and very soft bed. The breakfast is served from 6:30 to 9:30 every morning. You had your choice of eggs - sometimes scrambled, sometimes hard boiled, and sometimes over easy. They had three choices of cereal, waffles every day, bread and other pastries, orange juice or apple juice. I would recommend this hotel as well worth the reasonable price.
