“A very good budget hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013

We are a retired couple who have averaged 3 international vacations per year over the past decade. We stayed for a week at the Verve Hotel, in September 2013, based on its #1 Tripadvisor ranking. However, after we arrived, we too wondered why this hotel is ranked as the best in Long Island City when it only receives a 3 star rating from travel booking websites. Probably the answer has 3 parts:
1) The other 20 hotels in the area, with 2 exceptions, are rated as 3 stars or less. ie. There are no luxury hotels in Long Island City to compare the Verve to.
2) The vast majority of patrons of this hotel are young couples who likely have not stayed in luxury hotels and are unable to make a valid quality comparison.
3) It would appear that most reviewers are using the Tripadvisor bubble system to indicate how satisfied they are with their stay. So the large number of 5-bubble scores (that give the Verve a #1 rank on Tripadvisor) really mean that most people were very satisfied with their time in this budget hotel.

Why do I keep calling the Verve a budget hotel (albeit a good one)? It's quality is about equal to a basic Best Western (which usually gets a 2 1/2 to 3 star rating on Expedia, etc):
a) The rooms are reasonably large but are very plainly furnished and decorated. The flat- screen TVs are cheap ones with very poor resolution, adequate for news and sitcoms but very annoying for sports. Although there is extra space, the only chair in the King room is a desk chair. However, the rooms are very clean and the beds are comfortable.
b) The breakfast is a basic one. There are 4 choices of junk-food cold cereals, oatmeal hot cereal, scrambled eggs, sausage patties, cheese, and pancake mix. Coffee, milk, orange and apple juice are the drink selections. There a several different breads and donuts. Fresh fruit is in short supply; bananas and apples rotate on a daily basis. On the positive side, the breakfast room is bright and spacious and spotlessly clean.
c) The area surrounding the Verve is an older industrial neighborhood with tattered buildings and crumbling sidewalks. Four churches are within 100 yards but there are few decent restaurants. (Beware the Holiday Inn restaurant which is one block away; see my review on it.) However, the area is safe and 3 subway stations are a 5 minute walk away. You can get to Times Square in 10 minutes!
d) Equipment seems to suffer from maintenance problems. For 2 days the TV sports channels were off-line. One morning the internet was down. Our shower did not work properly. Our room's safe jammed shut on 2 consecutive days. Some keys on the business center computers do not work properly. However, the staff members were very sympathetic and had the problems fixed as soon as possible.

In summary, we would come back here because it meets all our needs. However, if you are thinking of staying at the Verve, read a lot of reviews about this hotel so you know exactly what you are getting. And finally, here are hints on price and room location: If you are staying for several days, go on the Verve website and register as a club member. Then you can pay in advance and receive a good discount on the room rate. We paid $123 per night compared to the advertised price of about $160. With breakfast included, that's a very good price for a New York hotel. Regarding room location, ask for one on the Manhattan side. If they don't honor that request, as in our case, you will hear subway trains all night unless you turn up the air-conditioner fan.

We went to the US Open Tennis Tournament and this hotel was very close by subway. Every staff employee I talked to was friendly and very helpful. They gave directions to the subway, gave directions to Juniors near Times Square, and even gave directions by subway to the closest Starbucks. The room itself was very roomy and comfortable - plenty of pillows (four) and very soft bed. The breakfast is served from 6:30 to 9:30 every morning. You had your choice of eggs - sometimes scrambled, sometimes hard boiled, and sometimes over easy. They had three choices of cereal, waffles every day, bread and other pastries, orange juice or apple juice. I would recommend this hotel as well worth the reasonable price.

Very helpful desk staff with directions to the subway, getting change, check in, and calling cabs. Hotel is a $20 cab ride to Times Square. Rooms are very clean and usual amenities are provided. A note indicates you may get any forgotten toiletries from the front desk.

This hotel is about 2 blocks from the Queen Plaza subway in Long Island City. This mafe a very easy ride into Manhattan. They do have underground parking for about 7 cars for $25 per night There was room to park on the street. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable. This hotel has a breakfast with eggs/ waffles cereal and beads included in the price of the room. The staff is wonderful and very helpful. One last thing they have free wireless in the rooms and 3 computers with a printer for guest to use.

I am not one to just give an overall bad review because of one thing. I won this hotel by bidding and my first thought was I have never heard of this hotel and that scares me. Turns out it is part of Choice Hotels. Customer service is lacking! Staff is basically rude. It started with a phone call to inquire about early check in. I called at ten am, Valerie was very short and not trying to be helpful. I asked what time can I call back, she said 2/2:30. Check in is at 3 so what good is that? My ride got me there at 1:30. Room was available in 10 mins.
At check in I asked for a double, the guy says whatever room you booked is what we give you. I explain I didnt choose a room because I bidded and they tell you let the hotel know your room preference. He wasnt going to check if he could do it, the rules are the rules! Mind you I am a
seasoned traveler. I had a male friend coming to share the room and I needed two beds. So they put me in an akward situation!
Room itself is decent, clean but on 1st floor you will hear every bit of noise outside and inside.
Yes convenient to train station.
Free WiFi included.
The rack rate for this hotel today is $339! I would say no way pay that for this hotel or location!
I would never stay here again and I got it for $140. Glad its only for one night. I am very big on customer service in the hospitality industry. The level of service is worst than the 2 star Choice
hotels that you expect the we dont care attitude when your on a long road trip. They are trying to make this their luxury collection and its not working! !

Room Tip: First floor room 111 you are in noise central

Stayed here for 1 night prior to our flight back to the UK. We had stayed in Manhatten at the start of our holiday but choose this due to proximity to Airports for our return. It's description as a quality budget hotel is spot on but at the highest spectrum of my perception of a budget hotel. We had splashed out in Manhatten with a superb hotel near Times Square at the start of our holiday but paid a lot for it and in comparison this hotel is great value. Location to Manhatten very good but we wanted to eat close by as arrived fairly late. Quick and efficient check-in and manager pointed us in the right direction for lots of local restaurants on 36th Street just 4 blocks down. Size of room and facilities absolutely superb for our family including teenage son. We visited the Museum of Moving Images on 35th Street before our flight and only 20 minutes walk from the hotel. We felt safe at night and day but as others mention it does over look industrial type buildings but do not let this put you off based on overall package you get here. The thing that does put this hotel in the top end category is the service and small points such as coffee making facility in room, dressing gowns, Crabtree and Evelyn toiletries, complimentary breakfast. I was really impressed with the management. The Manager was there when we arrived at 9 pm, recommended location for choice of restaurants, was there for breakfast and made sure service was efficient and visible in reception. Very impressive and no doubt that this drives the quality, efficiency and great value that this hotel provides.
