I noticed the Angel House on a previous visit to Lily Dale. It is a beautiful, large Victorian home with a large, comfortable porch. The porch area is whimsically decorated with fairies, angels, and Wizard of Oz touches. It is especially pleasant when lit up at night. Having seen people lounging here on the previous visit made me want to stay there on this trip. I checked out their web site and their guest rooms, all decorated with a theme, looked fresh and interesting.
I had some problems with making a reservation in that they seemed to be full (except for the room I got) during my visit. Yet, when I was there, I saw many (probably most) rooms available. I was given a room on their 3rd floor which is actually an attic type area. While I can't say it was dirty, I did refrain from looking too closely. My friend brought linens with her and we used those. The room was shabby and run down and could have used a coat of paint. A table cover was stained and the carpet was dark so any stains or uncleanliness would not have been visible.
We were supposed to share a bath with a neighboring room but the bathroom lock did not work. When I complained to the host, he seemed unconcerned telling me that there were only women on that floor anyhow.
The web site advertises a continental breakfast. What was actually available was a coffee pot (make your own), a half loaf of bread, and a toaster.
Safety could have been an issue also. There was a card on the table in our room that advised we should check the back of the door for an escape route. There was nothing on the back of the door. Checking out the layout of this third floor, it was apparent there was no way out except the one narrow staircase from the 2nd floor. From the 2nd floor, one could crawl out on the roof if need be. While I try not to stress about fire in hotels, these old homes are very vulnerable. While there were locks on the outside of the room, they were the size of a suitcase lock. Not a big deal as we did not keep valuables in the room. I checked in early before the room was ready and the host offered to keep my overnight bag. When I returned hours later, it was still laying out in a public area with no one around.
Overall, staying in Lily Dale was a special experience. I am not used to Guest Houses so maybe my expectations were too high. I do not know if any of the other guest houses in this little village would have been more pleasant and comfortable.
Get a 1st or 2nd floor room. They looked nicer and would be safer in case of a fire.
