“Barton Hill Spa Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 29, 2008

The spa service at Barton Hill was located across the street in the old Lewiston Hotel when I visited, as the onsite spa location within the Inn itself was not yet completed. The staff were wonderful and welcoming, and the spa treatment I received was terrific.

We visited Barton Hill for a little weekend getaway in January 08. When we were taken to our room it was freezing, (so cold you could not even take your winter jacket off) so we were given a blanket and a micro furnace. Not acceptable. The room was nice, but like reviews, to be paying $250.00 you would expect quality workmanship etc. Joints were all disconnected in the trim and the furniture was rather cheap. As well, there was no sitting area, so if you wanted to watch TV you had to lay in bed.

The room really didn't warm up, during our stay and there was no venting in the bathroom, so the ceramic flooring was freezing. The fan system ran all night along with the micro furnace.... Needless to say, we did not sleep well.

The breakfast consisted of coffee, OJ, and scones.... not a continental breakfast for a highend Inn.

But on the positive side - the spa was nice and the girls there were very welcoming.

I would expect far more for $250.00 than what was received, and therefore would not recommend this Inn.

We were booked for a bed and breakfast in Niagara on the Lake, but found out the night before our stay that there were heating problems at the B & B. Scrambling to find a special place for our one night getaway, we stumbled across the Barton Hill on the internet. With no knowledge of Lewiston or the hotel, we took a chance and booked it.

We were pleasantly surprised by both Lewiston and the hotel. Lewiston is a charming town - we drove in at night, to a beautiful main street absolutely covered in Christmas lights. As we entered the hotel lobby, we smelled cinnamon and cloves, immediately reminding us that it was Christmas. The lobby was carefully decorated with Christmas trees and life-size wooden nutcrackers.

Our room was beautiful. We booked a queen size room, but were upgraded to a corner, riverview room with king size bed. The linens are amazing, and the fire was so cozy.

The service was wonderful and attentive. We were cold from our shopping trip, so the concierge brought herbal tea to our room at no extra charge.

In the morning, we went to the lobby to see if there was coffee. We found fresh orange juice, fruit, and the best scones we've ever had (from a local Lewiston bakery). This was a wonderful surprise, as this continental breakfast had not been advertised as being included in our rate.

We definitely hope to return once the restaurant, pool and spa are complete. We were happy to have discovered the hotel in it's beginning stages (it does not seem unfinished on the floor we were on), and we look forward to having the full experience of the hotel in a couple of years. If the level of service remains high and the rates remain reasonable, this hotel will put Lewiston on the map.

My fiance and I just returned from the Barton Hill. The hotel was magnificent and we have never experienced such incredible service before. Granted that we have stayed in 5 start hotels before but this was much different from any other place we have stayed. It was absulutly amazing, we had a hard time leaving.

The rooms were very well appointed, very clean, and absulutly refreshing. We cannot wait to come back, and I cannot wait to see the place finished. There is not a single hotel in the Niagara Falls area that offers better service, elegance and trenquility that the Barton Hill offers!

We recommened the Barton Hill to anyone, its absulutly an amazing place, and I only see sucess in their future. Evereytime we visit the Niagara Falls area, we will make sure we stay at the Barton Hill!

We wanted to love Barton Hill because it is a hotel close to home in Lewiston which is a neat town. The people at Barton Hill were great but the hotel did not live up to the advertisements or the price. Let's start with the fact the hotel is a new build not a renovation. The rooms are designed strange. Our room had too much bedroom space with a very small bathroom with only a small sink and a HUGE shower, no vanity. There were no heat vents in the bathroom so it was cold in the morning. We saw the whirlpool room where the tub is a single person one behind the bathroom door which was cold and unappealing. The plaster work is done to look like it is a from a turn of the century home. Unfortunately the contractor took this a little too far in our room and failed to mount the sprinkler in the bathroom which hung off the ceiling and in the bedroom there was a gob of plaster on the side of the sprinkler. The other plaster work was okay at best. I think the thing that really offended us was the fact they charged us $10 for an extra person in the room (my husband). I accepted that thinking we were paying for breakfast. Our breakfast consisted of scones or cinammon rolls. Coffee and OJ too. WOW. This was incredibly disappointing. If they don't have the necessary paperwork to serve breakfast say so and give us a certificate to eat at a local diner. So we paid $10 for a roll and a towel. Overall the place was very over priced. It has so much potential but it was over all a disappointment.

We were involved in a wager with another couple and we won! The prize for the winners was a spa weekend away at a boutique hotel and spa for both couples - paid by the losing couple.

As we drove into Lewiston, the town was quite beautiful - a great deal of character along the main street. Driving up to the Barton Hill, we see a great view of the waterway and lush greenery- nice Fall colours on the trees...

The exterior of the Hotel is just spectacular, as is the main lobby. The spa was also first class, with great service and wonderful options. Our corner room, with a river view and fireplace, was second to none. Dinner in town was great as well...

While sections of the Hotel were unfinished and perhaps there could have been a little more service staff around and more breakfast options offered, we had an absolutely fabulous time.

We fully expect to return to the Hotel and Spa at a future date once all the construction is complete (if not sooner) and enjoy the final product.

We highly recommend this Hotel and Spa for romantic, relaxing getaways for couples looking for a nice retreat. We already have two couples searching for a good weekend to confirm our recommendation!!

Two stars because the staff, for the most part, tried their best and because the bedding was first rate. However, the Inn cannot rate higher for a number of reasons. First, we booked - in person - a room with a king size bed, as our toddler daughter would be sharing the bed with us. We emphasized that we really needed a king and were promised by the manager that we would have one. When we arrived to check in, we were put in a queen sized room. When we told the staff of the apparent mistake, they offered a cot, which we accepted. Second at the same time, we realized that the room was very hot. (We guessed at least 85-90 degrees and the staff concurred.) The bell-hand only then turned on the anemic air conditioning, which would have required a least a couple of hours to cool the room. Third, there was a wedding going on right outside of our door. Not in a ballroom, not down the hall, right outside of our door! In fairness to the manager who booked us, he did tell us that the inn was hosting a wedding that evening. However, in fairness to us, he did not tell us that it was to be in the second floor foyer with about a dozen room doors, including ours, within 25 feet of the DJ and within 5 feet of the rest of the wedding. It was ridiculously loud in our room. With all of that, we decided to pack up and go. On our way out, we asked the front desk to have either the owners or manager to please call us in the morning. We were assured that they would do so. They did not. Finally, the Inn looks nothing at all like like the picture on its web-site. While this may be a minor point to some, it is misleading and dishonest. And, the furniture throughout looks nice, but is of poor quality (think Pier One). It really should be of better quality for a place billing itself as a premier inn. The Inn is new and still need a lot of work. Maybe it will get there, but with the current ownership and management, I have my doubts. Until those two are changed, you are better off at one of the beautiful inns at Niagara-on-the Lake.
