“Good for short stop”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2014

We stayed at the Ibis Hotel in Butare during our roundtrip in July 2012 and we had a pleasant stay at the Hotel. The Service was very good and all our wishes were granted. The restaurant was very good as was the breakfast. The mosquito net was usable as well. Only in the rooms of the main building which where a little older the mosquito net wasn't very clean. The shower in the rooms of the main building were also a little older. We always had warm water and electricity.

The rooms in the little chapels were in a very good condition and were pretty nice. The location of the Hotel is pretty good as it is in the centre of Butare where you have access to restaurants and a bank. The national museum (ethnographic museum) is a 5 minutes car drive away.

The Ibis has three great things going for it: location, camping option, and decent restaurant on a spacious terrace overlooking the action on Kigali Road. Oh, and the best goat samosa I've had in my life.
We are traveling for a year in an old Landy with rooftop tent so we prefer to camp. In big cities or large towns, this isn't always an option. We were thrilled to find that the venerable Ibis Hotel can accommodate overlanders like us next to a grassy area behind the hotel. If you have a tent you can camp on the grass. We parked under a huge shade tree, room enough for our rooftop tent. There is a security man on duty throughout the night.
We were given a key to a room so that we could use the toilet and shower.
A bit noisy on the street, but it was Friday night in a University town so I expected that.
Museum is a short walk away, bank with ATM, petrol station, coffee shops and supermarkets are all very close by.
I recommend the Ibis for overlanders or anyone who wants to visit Butare while staying in the center of town.
I recommend

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated room.

I will stay somewhere else next time I'm in town. When I checked out, their credit card machine was broken and it was Sunday so banks were closed. Because of that I had to pay in USD cash, and they insisted on giving me a terrible exchange rate which made the bill significantly more expensive than it should have been. I understand that credit card machines break sometimes, but the hotel should not use this as a way to take advantage of its customers and overcharge them. I explained this but the staff insisted this was the policy.

Also, the roof leaked and after a heavy rain there was water all over the floor and on the bed. Fortunately none of my property was damaged, but it easily could have been.

On the plus side, the hotel is very central and the patio in front is a great place to sit in the evening.

I guess the options in Butare aren't very good, but I will definitely be trying a different one next time.

First of all - get your expectations in check. This is a small city in Africa. You need a quiet, clean, secure room with a hotel restaurant so you can dine in after dark. The Ibis fits the bill.
The shower was warm, the toilet flushed, the room is nice and spacious. In the morning vervet monkeys play in the trees. We found this place just fine.....and we liked the food.
The restaurant now offers a daily menu (menu du jour) to eliminate long wait times so common in Africa. So if you settle in with a beer, order the special, your soup will be served as soon as you want it with the main course following a reasonable time later.

Room Tip: We liked the rooms in the back opening onto the garden. But you can choose - they are all different.

I have stayed in Huye, aka Butare for a number of times. Ibis, and especially now the new build main building, is the best you can find in town. The service is good and friendly, the food is very OK, the rooms are clean. Shortly said - all you need when you stay in a small town African hotel. The hotel is in the very heart of Huye, easy to find and known to everyone. The hotel is VERY GOOD when rated in relation to what else Huye can offer in terms of accommodation.

Room old but adequate. Wifi adequate - a bid slow and unreliable. Food pretty horrible and staff not overly friendly. I stayed here with an organised tour so didn't get much choice but by the looks of it there isn't much choice anyway! Just don't come expecting too much!

My boyfriend and I stayed one night at Hotel Ibis for an early departure to Bujumbura, Burundi. We stayed in one of the old bedrooms. The reception staff gave us a room with twin beds saying it was cheaper. And that was true. In fact, the twin beds were put together so it didn't make a difference for us between double or twin beds. The room was clean. The mattresses were not comfortable but we had seen worse elsewhere.

Check for the hot water before taking the room, because in our case, they had turned off the water heater and we had to ask to turn it on. The concierge didn't know how, so we had to go back to the reception, and we had to wait one hour before the water get hot.

We didn't eat at the restaurant except for breakfast. It was ok as they offered a buffet with fresh fruits, what was nice. There is free internet WIFI which was pretty fast.
