“Nice Trip”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

Took a long weekend away with my wife. We stayed at the Crown Plaza. The resort is located right in the center of Lake placid, although the walk is up a brutally steep hill. The hotel itself is very nice. I think we were in one of the more recently added rooms. Our room was very nice with a balcony and Jacuzzi tub. The bathroom was large and nicely decorated. There are nice views of Mirror lake from the hotel. The lake is about a block away in downtown LP. We seemed to have water pressure problems both with the shower running hot and then cold, and with the toilet flushing. Nothing major but inconvenient. The parking is designed strangely, so we had a bit of a drive from the front entrance to get back to our room. Not sure that I would classify it as a Resort or a Golf Club, since other than an indoor pool there was little to do at the hotel itself. Overall a nice stay, and I would stay there again.

Thank you for your review of your recent stay at our resort. I apologize for all of our resort activities that were not available due to the season. In the summertime we have our own private beach, tennis courts & 45 holes of golf. In the wintertime you would be about to cross country ski on our cross country ski courses. Please come back and see us in the summer so that we can show you all the great items that we have to offer!

Awesome hotel!!!! We have been staying at the Crown Plaza between Christmas and New Years for many years. Great location behind the Olympic ice skating rink. Awesome views of Mirror Lake and the great room has one of the best views in Lake Placid. I have spent many hours at the bar there watching families playing board games. We have been staying at the Crowne Plaza for many years...we started when my son was a mite playing in hockey tournaments in Lake Placid so it's been over 10 years. We have gotten to know many of the hotel's staff and they terrific. Scott Burslem, Guest Services Manager, has become a friend and we enjoy seeing him every year. I highly recommend the Crowne Plaza to everyone who is planning a visit to Lake Plaza. You will be very pleased with your choice. My family always looks forward to our visit.

Room Tip: I highly recommend the Adirondack Wing.

Stayed at the Crowne Plaza as part of the Can-Am hockey tournament. Breakfasts and dinners were included in the cost we paid for the room.

Check-in: Due to hustle and bustle of many teams arriving at the same time on Thursday, the wait to check in was a little longer than my expectations and the lobby was crowded with suitcases, hockey bags and coolers. There were only three front-desk staff on duty - could've used 4 or 5 - however, they were welcoming and friendly. These staff have the protocols for Can/Am guests down pat and were efficient once we made it to the desk.

Room: We upgraded to a king suite and appreciated the separation from the front sleeping area. A second bathroom would've been nice. The king bed was comfortable and my son who had a double bed also rested well. There were many chairs in the room (good for entertaining hockey parents) and two others on the balcony as well. We did appreciate that our entire team was relatively closely positioned in a suite of north wing rooms. We do wonder why there is no recycling bins in the hotel rooms - I hated to put plastic bottles and cans in the garbage bin.

Areas for Improvement: The rooms themselves are a little on the dark side and I would have preferred better lighting. The carpets, while not worn in the rooms are a little tired in common areas such as hallways and staircases. We used the staircases after we checked in because the small elevators took too long. The walk from the rooms to the parking lot is lengthy.

Housekeeping Service: Outstanding. The staff really seem to work as a team and enjoy their jobs. I must give credit to the leader of this team who has built a highly motivated and professional team.

Location: The Crowne Plaza is situated on the top of a steep hill overlooking the Village of Lake Placid and Mirror Lake. Whiteface mountain and others in the Adirondacks provide an amazing backdrop. The hike up the hill to the hotel from main street literally takes your breath away and is not advised for anyone with breathing difficulties. Walking down the hill is hard on the knees and we found it very slippery in the morning and evening. As a result, we did a mix of walking and driving up/down the hill throughout the weekend and appreciated the municipal parking lot at the foot of the hill so we could load hockey bags in our van after games at the Olympic rink triplex at the base of the hill.

Best Feature: The lounge - open only to those > 21 years of age - is the best and most beautiful feature of the Crowne Plaza. It is appointed as a log cabin (post and beam style) with wonderful cast iron chandeliers, hunting and sporting paraphenalia, a grand fireplace and many large comfortable chairs and couches. The bartenders were great.

Meals: The buffet style breakfasts and suppers with our Can/Am package offered many choices and it was nice to see the allergy warnings posted for those with food sensitivities. Coffee was great (surprisingly). At times it took a while for empty trays of hot items to be replenished - usually at peak service times. We were pleased to see fish offered twice on Thursday and Saturday but extremely disappointed that it wasn't served on Good Friday.

Shopping: I had thought I would need to venture 50 miles to Plattsburgh outlets to find great deals but boy was I wrong. From shoes for dad, to shirts and ties for son, and a new spring wardrobe for mom, we got everything we could imagine in Lake Placid at prices far less than we would have paid at end of season sales. Even new duvets for our cottage were had at 1/2 price.

Attractions: While our free time in Lake Placid was limited, we did circle Mirror Lake. I will do tours of Whiteface and Olympic ski-hill attractions on my next visit to Lake Placid.

Pool / Spa: We did not use the pool / spa.

Room Tip: First - if you don't like commotion, avoid the Crowne Plaza on a designated Can/Am hockey weeken...

Just spent a wonderful weekend at the CP with the CAN/AM tournament for Special Needs hockey players. The entire staff could not have been more welcoming, friendly, attentive and respectful to the visitors with Down Syndrome, Autism, and other conditions. Believe me, this is not always the case! Every parent I spoke with agreed, staff was kind, patient and never spoke down to or ignored a guest but tried their best to help. Kids loved the great room, lobby, buffet, and pool. Beautiful hotel. Good parking. Wonderful views. Walk to rink and downtown. Hope to return!

Spent a few days in Lake Placid in March. Enjoyed our stay here very much.
What we Like :
- Great location to visit Lake Placid. Also close to Whiteface ski, they offer discount lift tickets
- In room fridge and microwave, also free WiFi
- Has laundry facility
- They put all the hockey tournament youth to one wing, so other guests will not hear the noise, it is a very good arrangement
- Breakfast is reasonable priced in on-site restaurant and quality is good. They also offer coupon for free coffee/tea
- Discount coupon and transportation to Boathouse restaurant across the Mirror Lake
What we don't like:
- in the swimming pool area, no changing room, no shower

The view and the main lodge, as well as the rooms, are outstanding ! When we will return to the area for the summer again, we will most definitely be staying here. The BEST VIEW in Lake Placid. Friendly staff, great amenities. Nothing to complain about - The Lake Placid Club also has condo's, we may look into those if we choose to come here year over year ! Thank you for the hospitality !

I recently spent several nights at the Crown for business. It is always a pleasure to come back to this hotel. The rooms are well maintained and clean. The only complaint I have is the less than supportive pillows. The staff at the hotel has always been friendly and hard working because it seems that there are never enough of them. While I understand the economics, during breakfast with a full dining room the few servers work up a sweat trying to keep up. While each day was a buffet, there are still table service issues and the staff get five stars for their hard work. The omelet station was spot on and the chef did well to keep up. The most irresistible item on the buffet is the cinnamon swirl French toast, to die for. Speaking of the food, I never had a bad meal in this place and I think the restaurant is under rated with guests wanting to sample the local faire. We were served business buffet type lunches which were had the usual offerings but of good quality although the chicken or tuna salad options were nice. The group had a sit down banquet one night during our stay and the food was good quality and well served. The restaurant also has an Italian night which I would have expected serving stations but was served buffet style, it was good but just OK. The view from this hotel is breathtaking and the great room in the front is perfect just to sit and contemplate beauty any time of the year. While in Lake Placid this is an excellent place to stay and dine, I would never steer anyone away and look forward to returning.

Room Tip: Certinly try to get a room overlooking the mountains and you will not be disappointed.
