“A lovely place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2013

I have not been back to Lake Placid for a while, but on a friends recommendation I stayed at The Pines Inn.
What a pleasant surprise. This small hotel has a European feel and a very nice ambiance. Although an older property it is spotless and lovingly maintained, with beautiful hardwood floors, nice decorations and very comfortable rooms. Its proximity to downtown makes it even better. You can walk to lots of restaurants and even the Olympic Center.

Jill, the owner, was most gracious and made me feel very welcome. Their prices and location and great atmosphere make this a very good choice when visiting LP.

We booked into this hotel as it was reasonably priced and within walking distance of the town centre area. Weather was horrible (it was like Summer in Scotland), with heavy rain. Fortunately the hotel had large umbrellas to share with guests. We had thought we would eat in rather than face the weather but were told that as JUNE is off season the restaurant wasn't open. Not being local we had thought June would have been prime season, but hey ho. No lift that we could see, very large hotel and we had a room on the 2nd floor right at the other end of the hotel. For a hotel which wasn't busy I was suprised we had to drag our suitcases so far. Room was quite small although comfortable. Lack of mirrors in the bedroom, but one in the bathroom. Fresh coffee available in the morning for all guests, but no tea. The owner did make me some when I asked if there was any, which was very considerate. Whilst I'm not slating this property, I just think we didn't get to see it at its best, i.e. fully open.

This property was probablly built during the 1932 Olympics. For medical reasons asked about elevator, the owner said no elevator, yet there is one for housekeeping only. Very very basic, price is not warrant more than $70/night. The owners need to be more hospitable if they wish to keep clients, and agree to prices from online booking. This property needs major improvements that would be nice to include a hot breakfast, coffee was nice but lets get with the times and be eco friendly with NO STYROFOAM cups.

The Pines Inn is in a perfect, quiet location, just 5 minutes from downtown Lake Placid. The owners were very kind and helpful (thanks for everything, Jill, you are the best!!), and gave us great advice for hiking and things to do in town. You cannot beat the price of the Inn for all you get -- including a hot tub, work out room, restaurant, lounge, computer, TV with great channels (Bravo and Lifetime included ladies), and spacious closets and bathrooms. I am surprised at the poor reviews that were recently given, as I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a wonderful experience in Lake Placid. If you want to pay little for a lot, this is the place for you. We will definitely be back!

Room Tip: There is no elevator, so if you are located on a higher floor, just ask the owners to help you with...

This is the perfect setting for a weekend away. The rooms are quaint and give you a relaxed feeling. The hostess is always smiling and makes you feel most welcome. It is like staying overnight at your grandmother's big Victorian home.

Room Tip: make sure you read what is available in the rooms. I read ahead of time so knew to take my hairdrye...

Beater old place. Overpriced. Terrible service. Won't change the sheets or vacuum on a 4 day stay. Bathtub peeling. Walls peeling. Soap and shampoo from 1958. Noisy. No elevator so schlep your bags 4 flights. Want to change ? That's a UN negotiation. Long with unsatisfactory results. Owner kinda tries but more about greedy than about service or value on balance. I bet they're actually nice people just don't belong in the service industry.

Wifi is terrible. Limited area and most bandwidth is taken by hotel for their use.

They did a great job making coffee available in the am. Seriously. The best part of the deal.

Never again. Zero stars. Sleep in your car.

Stayed one night, and didn't have high expectations. It's old-fashioned with lots of creaky wood (call it character). The accommodations were dated and on the small side. It's a budget-place, so what do you expect? The lobby seating area is huge, and the wi-fi worked there. If you don't mind a few imperfections and are travelling on a budget, this is fine.

Room Tip: Pick the top floor if you are worried about hearing guests moving about.
