Desperados is our family's favorite place to go in Lake Placid. Both Mike and Andrew have sent over special treats when they've realized we were there for birthdays. The good ole' days. Recently we chatted up the place to our daughter's friends. While the food was good, the service left us disappointed.
We always arrive between 5 and 6 because it gets really busy after 6 (it didn't). We were a party of 7, not the biggest group we've had there. We were seated in the back (new room) near the corner. It was easy to see that it was the kiddie section for the evening. The two tables by us had young and very young children. One table was well behaved the other was not. It was a little noisy as kids ran all over and screamed while doing so. I do get annoyed at such things because our kids were taught to behave in public and think other people should too. There were other tables available to accommodate our size, but we didn't get them. Maybe they were saving them? I don't know. One was never used until we were walking out. I had to sit in the aisle because they stuck a chair on the end of the table. Not very comfortable at all. I'll not allow that to happen again. I only sat there because no one else in our party wanted to. We weren't given enough chips and salsa so I asked for more. I was told we couldn't have more until we ate what we had. The way we were seated, we had to keep passing the salsas around and my end of the table never got the green since there wasn't enough for seven people. She did grudgingly bring more chips, though. I would have paid for more to have enough salsa. Five of our seven people were 16, 17, or 18 years old. They were well behaved, so I don't know why our server treated us like a band of unruly children. I felt like we were keeping her from something more important. These kids are unusually quiet for teens; that's how they were raised. Our meals were good, as usual. Our server was annoyed that we asked for Peach Fresno hot sauce but reluctantly brought us some. Everyone enjoyed the food and drinks. Because of our seating arrangements, out petite server had trouble placing the dishes and had to lean all over the end people to do so; I was clearly in the way and moved over. My husband was so uncomfortable that he jumped up and out of the way when she brought the rest of the plates. Not the safest way to place food considering the temperature of the plates. I had to seek her out to get more water. Really? I just don't get it. We go there often, we promote the restaurant, we go after shopping, after events, for special occasions. I disagree with many of the bad reviews on here and feel some are personal or may be competing businesses, but the ones that complain about service may have had our server. We asked about the soup because my husband loves their garlic soup but rarely manages to be there on a night they have it. She said she didn't know what the soup was but she knew it wasn't that one. Ughhh...I hate that I tipped her an appropriate amount!! I feel like Despos isn't as busy as they once were and feel it could be due to service issues.
