Owner description: While visiting the Adirondacks and Lake Placid be sure to include horseback riding for one of your most memorable of your vacation activities. Family run, we offer the gentlest horses in the area and unlike most stables we keep them through retirement. We also run a Horse Rescue, and most of our horses came from auctions and other, unfortunate circumstances. Rides are approximately 45-50 minutes with an additional instructional lesson prior to the ride to help you familiarize yourself with how the horses have been trained and answer any questions you may have. Longer rides available for year 2012. SEI certified helmets provided. Children and Family friendly. We are an easy drive from Saranac Lake, Keene, Wilmington, Plattsburgh, and Essex areas. Walking distance from Main Street in Lake Placid.

“Still the best!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

Thank you, Travis and Natalia, for another great riding experience. We have never been disappointed when we ride with your Center and this year is no exception.

We find the video prior to the actual ride to be beneficial. Safety is so important and it doesn't hurt to be reminded of the do's and dont's just before a ride. It only takes a few minutes and is very informative.

The trails themselves were great and the fall colors were just beautiful. You can't control the colors at your Center but it sure seemed like you made the scenery special just for us!

Thank you again, and as we say every year, will see you next September.

“Long wait, short ride, pricey”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2012

This 'adventure' would suit someone with no previous horse riding experience, and who wants just a brief taste. The problem is that it seemed to take forever until we actually got on the trail, and then the ride seemed pretty short. I recognize that some of the time spent before the ride was for safety instruction which is necessary, but I think it could be a bit faster - and the ride could be a bit longer. Also, fairly pricey.

Dear reviewer,

Thank you for your review!

We don't presume to be the perfect riding experience for everyone and would like to address your comments.

Yes, safety is our number one priority and the orientation we give is paramount to achieve this goal. Horses can be powerful and dangerous animals and it takes years of experience to truly understand the often overlooked nature of the animal. Our 15 minute to 20 minute orientation (depends on group) is necessary to address these safety concerns. In addition not all horses are trained the same way.

English riding versus Western riding can be drastically different, in commands and in form. Experienced riders understand this difference and appreciate the instruction on a how particular horse has been trained. For example, English riders are taught to use leg pressure to ensure a proper seat, however on a Western trained horse, the use of leg pressure will cause your horse to continue to pick up speed and cause a very unsafe situation. We are very upfront about the lesson we give and believe it is one of reasons why our horses are some of the best behaved and cared for that one can find. We want to make sure our animals are always treated with consistency.

In regards to the duration of the trail ride, we explicitly explain the length in hours and minutes. Our stable offers the basic ride that is between 50 to 55 minutes which runs through the gorgeous 30 miles of trail at Mt Van Hoevenberg's Olympic Sports Recreational Complex.
For riders who wish to have more of an advanced experience we also offer a private 2 hour trail ride and lesson. This is another option that we suggest to all of our callers.

In the United States caring for and keeping horses is expensive. We are also a horse rescue and most of the proceeds go towards the support of our animals. Due to economic and agricultural pressures, costs continue to rise. All the same our pricing structure remains competitive to that of other riding establishments in the Northern NY area. We feel that in comparison to most places we offer some of the highest quality horses (plus equipment) and unique riding experiences one can find.

Once again we thank you for your review and would have hoped you've had a better experience with us.

“Wonderful experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2012

My fiancé and I went for a 1.5 hour ride. We had such a great time. We went on a private ride where Travis was guiding us (they offer group rides as well but I recommend the private ride). Travis was friendly and caring. He talked to us about his rescues and you could really tell he is a very caring person and he really loves his horses. My fiancé had almost no experience with riding horses and he found the whole thing to be really easy. The show you a video on what to do and what not to do and then they practice some things before you actually go out and meet your horse. Like I said, we signed up for a 1.5 hour ride. But we stopped a few times to let the horse get a snack (which is a great idea- it keeps the horses excited for the ride), so overall our ride was closer to 1.75 hours. The snack break does not interfere with your riding time. The breaks also allow for picture taking. Travis took some cute pictures of the me and my fiancé. The trail is pretty nice as well. Finally, I love how he owns a horse rescue- that's where the money goes. So not only are you getting a great experience but you can feel good knowing your money is going to saving horses. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and if we are ever in upstate NY again we will definately be going back.

“Great ride and nice for all ages, make reservations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2012

We had a beautiful ride through the forests. The leader was quick to give everyone the appropriate horse. We got our full time (signed up for 45 minutes) But it is really geared for a nice slow walk, because as it was explained they don't want to tax the rescued horses too much, they give several walks a day. (remember the true cause is helping defray the costs of caring for the rescued horses)

This is for people who will enjoy a slow walk, and chat. not someone who wants anything faster than that. my 7 year old said the ride was perfect for her first time. (maybe there could be an optional faster ride with horses that could handle it at a particular time during the day)

I did have a slightly hard time understanding the call taker as well, but made it work and knew how to get there because we know the area.
It is currently located in the same area as the ORDA bobsled complex, go almost all the way towards the bobrun, and make a left just before bobrun parking and follow the horse signs (and arrows)

The only thing that would have made our visit better is if we could have given the horses snacks or treats ourselves at some point, and if there was an area to sit and watch the horses (that werent being used) while others were riding.

“Lovely ride”

Very friendly and an enjoyable ride through the forest. Would have liked a choice of rides so that more experienced riders could go further/faster rather than just walking.

Dear Rider !

Thank you for coming to ride with us and support our horse rescue ! Many riders enjoy our group oriented rides if they are looking for something quick, educational and fun. For the more acquainted with horses, we offer the hour private rides (60 min) and the hour and a half (90 minute) private rides. Perhaps that would be of interest to you the next time you come out for a ride here at the Adirondack Equine Center & Horse Rescue !

We appreciate your input, and please keep us in mind while visiting the Adirondacks !
